MAGIC AND MELEE.It's early days yet, but the plan is to have a hall booked out every week, open for anyone/everyone to come in and do what they like. Video games, card games, anything really.
Though I'm not claiming it's a definite thing.
Haters can get out pleaseVyse here once again talking about the Queensland Smash scene. Running strong since 2005, we’ve seen the rise of many players in both Melee and Brawl. Queensland enjoys a rich history full of competitive spirit, drama and high level play that we as a state have taken around Australia and the world (well, 97th out of 297 in America ain’t bad right?).
To get today’s newer players acquainted with the biggest players in today’s Brawl scene I thought I’d do a small spotlight expose on my pick of ten of Queensland’s top players to watch out for (don’t take this as a power ranking or set in stone list, there are many players vying for a position in our top 10).
And in no particular order:
Chris/R4VEN
Formerly known as ‘DJ Kaion’, R4VEN is a suprising Samus player from Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast. A long time player of Brawl, he had a copy of the game before even the majority of America did. In recent times he has stepped up to take on the role of tournament organiser in the Gold Coast area, hosting a string of tournaments at Robina’s Dexterity Games console lounge. He is also an administrator for MyWii.com.au, heavily promoting competitive smash play through its forums, and is able to adapt to online and offline play without much difficulty. His Samus is suprising, originally taken up by R4VEN when Vyse (me) claimed she wasn’t tournament viable.
James/J-Birds
If Amaterasu is undeniably our champion, J-Birds is undeniably a close 2nd. Tournaments with local attendance with these two players in attendance are likely to finish in a grand finals set between these two players. J-Birds represents Queensland’s top Snake and Ice Climber’s play and it’s with an admirable competitive spirit that he continues to strive for a calibre of play with which to threaten Amaterasu’s mantle. Being a competitive player he’s also always acting in the best interest of the smash scene’s health, helping to keep it alive by helping with Smash related initiatives and being an overall friendly guy in general.
Jaice
Jaice is quickly coming to establish himself as a top player in Queensland, despite hot and cold results. Whilst he faired poorly at ‘The Tempest’, he managed to take his Peach and Olimar combo all the way to 2nd place at ‘SmashPlay I’. Jaice and his brother AD3PT also ocassionally hold practice meets at their place, aiming to get better and as such are two players definitely worth watching out for.
Jesse/Jesmo
Jesmo represents the youngest in my top 10 picks to watch out for in upcoming tournaments. Whilst Jesmo actually lives in New South Wales, he has consistently placed well at tournaments in Queensland over the past two years, proving time and again that he’s a contender amongst Queensland’s top players. Despite being a young player, his wolf plays with a patience that stands unrivalled amongst Queensland, and isn’t above forcing matches to go his way through effective camping strategies. Always accompanied by his family, the ‘Jes-Family’ clan are always a talking point of any tournament they attend.
Toki
Toki is another relatively young player who has gradually worked towards establishing himself as a player to beat in Queensland. Over the past 2 years, his skill as a player has slowly, but surely grown to see him become Queensland’s best Marth main and one of its top performers in tournament settings. This Gold Coast player is also renowned for looking remarkably like Scabe, a famous Link main from the ACT (Author’s Note: I think they’re twins), and is also renowned for his amazing textures and music built into his Wii for Brawl.
Scott/Hotdog
Hotdog is a Kirby main that is as old as the Queensland Brawl scene, famous for placing 2nd place out of 69 in his debut tournament at ‘Queensland Brawl Buddies’. Hotdog has an important place in the Queensland smash community as Brisbane’s most active tournament organiser over the last two years, hosting tournaments in fortitude valley’s PCYC and now at the Jagera community hall in South Brisbane. Since his brilliant debut, he’s remained a solid contender amongst Queensland’s higher echelons, pushing his Kirby play more with each tournament.
Ben/Scrubs
Scrubs is a hardened smash veteran in Queensland, one of a few here to be a part of it longer than me (though only just). I’ve put him down as a Toon Link main, but he tends to be rather fickle in his character choice. He’s capable of playing Dedede, Donkey Kong and a number of others depending on his mood. Despite not being able to stick to a character, he’s proven time and again that he can keep up with the best of them with consistent placing at tournaments throughout the years. Good luck beating him at Melee too. That’s all but a lost cause for most
Anthony/Vyse
Hey it’s me! I personally don’t think much of myself as a player, but rather, I just strive to bring the goodness that is smash to the wider community. I fulfill a number of roles including Queensland major tournament organiser, Smashboards Super Moderator, LanSmash.com Smash and Forum Administrator, Animania Smash Tournament Organiser, Australian representative in the Brawl Back Room and general manager of sorts in our part of the country. When I’m actually playing the game I don’t fare too badly, often placing within the top 8 with the help of Diddy Kong and his obscenely banana play. Hit me up for a game!
Kas/Sirias
Enter another Queensland Smash veteran, Sirias is actually Australia’s best Melee player after coming first at Melbourne’s major tournament ‘Rocky’ last year. In regards to Brawl, Kas is working towards getting better with Falco, although his definition of better might be a lot different to ours, with his Falco already capable of placing very highly in Brawl tournaments he enters. Despite the titles he may hold, he’s still a fun and laidback guy (as are everyone on this list), though under that veil is a natural talent that sees him achieve greatness in a lot of things.
Chris/Amaterasu
Christopher ‘The Doctor of love Amaterasu’ Woo is Queensland’s undisputed champion of Brawl. He has without fail placed first in every single tournament he’s entered in Queensland without inter-state attendance, wherein he has not placed below third. Amaterasu’s Metaknight play hits you with the precision one would expect from a soon to be Doctor – I can count the number of times I’ve beaten him in tournament on one hand. Don’t let all this intimidate you though, he’s a happy, friendly guy otherwise.

For some insight, when we get down to the bottom end of Queensland's top 10, it becomes hard to decide who's better than who. We see results from tournaments here and there and many players who I personally believe should be there aren't due to other commitments such as work getting in the way.
Hounarable mentions include:
seaDORFand oldmanDORF
Along with rangaDORF form an admirable alliance of Ganondorf mains. seaDORF has placed extremely well in the past, and outpeforming myself on a number of ocassions when he's really motivated!
Yokai:shiek:
An extremely motivated individual who loves to play, but due to the pressures of uni and work, cannot attend a majority of events. I know for a fact that he'd be right up there since he definitely keeps up with Scrubs and I.
Matt
As I said before, Matt and his brother, Jaice are dangerous players to watch for!
There are many more to mention and you know who you are, but I think I'll cut it short here. The next few tournaments are set to really shake things up, and from the results we gather, we'll see a new Queensland power ranking form on the eve of Robocop in Melbourne.
