Scrubs, When your looking at a venue, try some community halls, they can usually be hired out till a bit later at night. 9pm? or something.

Not saying that a tourny would take that long, but it would make the lunch rush easier to cope with?

Thanks Yokai

Yeah I know that they can be hired pretty late....

I went to a pretty terrible party in church hall ages ago

There are high level players in Aus....

Not relative to the US but relative to other Australian players a upper echelon does exist.

If Japan's power level ranks on a 10, Australia would get about a 6. At least it ranks on the scale

Agreed. Im not part of it really (yet?) but qld will improve. This tourny will be a major kickstart for the scene in QLD, or so I believe.

EDIT: Can we brainstorm possible methods of attracting people who may not know about SWF? Is it free to advertise in the free newspaper or something?

I dunno, I just think we should really have alot of numbers this time round. Get more people involved.

Have posters up around at any Schools/Unis and such its what we here in Sydney are going to do for our next tourney...Well I am anyway... But that being the case...you will get heaps of people...most of them incredibly sucky at the game, so not only will the brawl segment of the split tourney go forever (or have very limited amounts of swiss rounds which = fail) but the majority will not want to be playing Melee...

I dont think Brawl/Melee tourneys on the same day will ever work...but your welcome to try, both Melbourne and Sydney had theirs semi-fail...maybe you guys can do it....

All is brawl made me lol. But Kulla's statement is valid. But I just dont want to have a tourny claiming to be everyone from QLD, when infact we dont even know it.

I have a possibly EPIC idea for a venue.

Helensvale State High School.

As you may know, I am an employee of said High School, as a Network Administrator. Now we ocassionally hold LAN's at the school during weekend days and overnight, so I see no problem in using the Student Activity Centre as a venue for the tournament.
---
Pro's

- It's FREE:
Yes you read right. The venue shouldn't cost me a single cent to use seeing as I am an employee. It never costs us anything usually.

- It's ****ing huge:
None of this 14 x 7 metre room crap. We're talking 50 x 50 metre Student Activity centre, a stage, toilets, frickin everything. We could even play badminton if we really wanted.

- Tournament Size potential:
Will EXPLODE if we use a high school as a venue. Helensvale State Highschool has approximately 2100 students, and if even 20 of them are interested and attend, it could make for one of, if not the, largest smash tourneys in QLD (Or even Aus) history.

- No time restraints, AT ALL!:
At least, I'm pretty sure this would be the case. We'd probably want something reasonable, but yeah. It would mean people could get here later, and lunch could be more epic in scope. Speaking of which, the convenience store across the road has a SF:2 machine : 3

- Equipment:
Digital Cameras, Projectors and Screens, power boards and leads, and every other conceivable piece of equipment will be available.

***

Con's

- First and foremost, the problem with students being in school grounds with outsiders, is that they'll all have to sign permission forms that release HSHS responsibility, and it'll all have to go through the right channels, or else I'll be waving goodbye to my job.

- All aforementioned advantages of the location regarding anything owned by the school, has to return to the way it was when the venue is finally vacated, or else I'll be waving goodbye to my job.

- People have to be watched, in order to make sure they do not wander the school grounds to places they shouldn't be. Or else I'll be waving goodbye to my job.

- The High School isn't as accessible as the Community centre is in regards to how far away it is from the Helensvale train station. HOWEVER, Busses from the station go straight there, and is at most, a 5 minute busride up the main road, and you can get off right in front of the school. Parking space is ample, but please don't drive into the school where your car shouldn't be, or else I'll be waving goodbye to my job.

- Somehow I think I'll be waving goodbye to my job.

Just tell them that we are doing a mass tutoring session involving the use of tvs and games.
And if they want proof I'll recite random biology facts at them - problem solved =D

Melee and Brawl on the same day is complete and utter failure.
Just make it brawl. No one is really interested in Melee anymore except for a few select people. We need to let it dissapate.

Maybe you can plan just for brawl but if we finish early we can hold a mini melee singles? Either way I'll be there.
I'll update the QLD thread tomorrow. I have net access now ^ and some spare time tomorrow night.. I think. Time is hard for me to come by.

Anthony that venue sounds great...

Just appoint some responsible people to be TO's make them look official, people are less likely to muck around if they are in the presence of an authority figure.

usually the people hardcore enough to either stay late, or go early are the melee goers, so maybe put it on at an end rather than during if at all.
also theres a chance i could go, but i have 2 conditions
1: i get money/have the time to go, thats the main bit, but....
2: chris teams with me :3

- Concerning the school as a venue -

Well, many of the kids I expect to come are kids that already see me as an authority figure. The entry fee I think would be enough to deter any unwanted people.

That they'd have to sign a permission form would be enough to keep them in line as well.
Randoms (I hope) will probably be reasonably behaved, I have no worries there.

I'd say it's more important that I greet as many people as possible at the door, and just lay down the law in as nice a way as possible. That way it's better for everyone.

- Other Issues -

I'm concerned about taking money from students. I'll have to run by the School Registrar that the event will involve me taking money from people for the purpose of running a competition. I don't know that I'm allowed to do that or not. I could just leave out that detail, but if somebody complains for whatever reason, I could probably get in trouble.

If it comes to that, I could simply allow students to enter the tournament for free, and allow them the chance to win the pot without actually having to contribute. (And if any of them place, we should be very ashamed of ourselves).

- On the potential venue front for that matter -

Firstly, I'm going to run it by a colleague of mine, Dean, whom is the one that usually runs the LAN's and ask for his opinion on the idea.

Secondly I'm going to run it by my Boss. She's pretty good though, she's more like a mum than a boss, so she'll either tell me straight out that I can't for 'x' reasons, or tell me that I'll be able to and help me organize it all.

Thirdly (And most dauntingly) I'd have to run it by the school Registrar, who is the one that will give the final answer on the issue. I don't know what she'll say to it, since it's a little more complicated than a friday night lan, all things considered. But that being said, I'm on pretty good terms with staff all over the school. I'm a former, straight A student. AND I came back to be an employee, and have helped the Registrar many a time with her computer, so I think that could work in my favour.

Anyway, that's my update report for now.
That and Yokai is trying to make up some Ward Shirts : 3

@Ryan: Fine, but I wanna team with on of the out of staters, or Ben <3

@Greenstreet: Hey no worries, I'll change it for you. Also, TV supply is slightly more important than Wii supply I think. If you'll be transporting people here, if you could even get somebody to tank the TV in the front passenger seat, that would be godly.

(I've had to tank TV's in the front seat before, lol)

*Puts up hand*

Anyway, I updated the front page a little. I colour coded people according to whether they are bringing equipment, are out of stater's, or are either Syke or Sirias.

As to the topic of the venue, discussion can resume on my proposal on monday. Hopefully by then I'll be able to confirm or deny HSHS activity centre as the venue.

New topic of Discussion: Tournament structure!

Generally we've run with one of two setups:
Double Elimination or Swiss.

For those who may be out there lurking, or those that need a refreshers on how these work (Also, I'm pretty sure this is right, but correct me if I'm wrong):

Double Elimination works kinda like how tournament mode works in Brawl. Everyone gets a position in a bracket, and progress through one on one elimination rounds until a winner is decided. What makes a double elimination work is that players who lose will be sent to the loser's bracket, where they may continue to proceed through the tournament. Losing in this bracket, will mean you're out of the tournament. So even after dropping a match, it is still possible to win the tournament.

Swiss works differently. During each round of the swiss draws, you'll get to play, even if you lose consecutively. In the first round, you are simply pitted against a random opponent. After that, and in each consecutive round, you will be pitted against players with a similar standing as you.

So if you win your first two rounds, in the third round of swiss, you'll face a player who has also won twice.

Now I realise that whichever way we decide to do it will be dependent on the amount of players attend versus the amount of TV's and Wii's we'll have on the day. So I'm bringing this up for people to discuss. I think if we can get close to 1 TV for every 3 people, then doing Swiss could work.

3 guesses why lol.
You really want to win don't ya?

Swiss results in everyone getting the same amount of matches, and makes it so you are playing against people (hypothetically) of the same skill level as you as the rounds progress.
