I've had a few discussions recently about the performance enhancing or reducing effects of mind-altering substances in regards to Brawl. I want to make it actually clear before you read this that I do not encourage, condone, or support in any way the abuse or misuse of any illicit or prescription drug. There are serious possible health complications that may arise. Don't be a dumb***.

That said I have a background in neuroscience and pharmaceuticals, as a former Neuroscience major and current Nursing student, so I decided it was time to put my info out there. If something is inaccurate and you suffer for it, I am not liable for your stupidity. legal stuff...

Where to start...

- Cold/Flu/Alergy medications: probably will make you drowsy, probably bad for your reaction time.

++ Caffeine: as a pretty straightforward legal, unscheduled stimulant, this is the way to go. Soda, coffee, energy drinks, in reasonable amounts will probably help you. If you take enough to become jittery your game will suffer though. Everyone loves caffeine, most viable option by far.

+ Nicotine: another stimulant, this one acting as an acetocholine (nicotinergic) receptor agonist. Its a mixed bag since smoking will reduce your oxygen intake but non-chronic smoking improves your concentration and acts to reduce anxiety. You can smoke outside venues so this is a valid option.

--- Opiate Painkillers: if you've had surgery or a major injury, you might be taking vicodin or whatever. As a major depressant it will reduce your reaction time. Don't abuse these... bad s***.

+-- Benzodiazapines (ie anti-anxiety meds): These are a mixed bag. You might be taking them for panic attacks or OCD. They improve your ability to handle pressure in a competitive setting but again, lower your response time.

++-: Amphetamines (ADD medication / Illegal drugs): There is no doubt that in sane amounts these improve your concentration, reduce fatigue, and improve reaction time. However, there are definite medical issues with their use, without a prescription you WILL be breaking the law, and unless you have a legitimate reason to be taking them, you are cheating. Cheater...

+++: Modafinil (Provigil, narcolepsy medication): A central nervous stimulant that negates the effect of sleep deprivation, it is a known nootropic and has positive effects on memory and mood. It is also much safer than Amphetamines. Again though, its cheating and if you have heart problems it can be dangerous.

---: Alcohol: contrary to popular belief, booze is bad for your game. Depressant, not allowed at tourneys obviously.

--: Antipsychotics: Unless you've become acclimated, any antipsychotic is gonna mess up your game... badly.

--: Sleep aids: duh

-+: THC (pot): lots of disagreement surrounds this one. While improving your capacity for non-linear thought, it also reduces reaction time. Note that some strains have a stimulant effect and others will have a depressing effect. Potency also varies a lot. It can ratchet up anxiety levels, but this isn't universal and happens more in chronic pot smokers.

+---: Cocaine: is f***ing stupid. Don't do it. It will make you really annoying, is really addictive, and very dangerous.

??: Entactogens (MDMA, MDA, MDE): lots of health issues and dangers surround these. The effects are so broad, and I can't come to a conclusion as to what effect it will have. People will know you're on something if you take E. Your cartoon eyes and mushy loveyness are a dead giveaway.

---: Dissociatives (PCP, Ketamine, DXM): No benifit whatsoever, these completely remove your ability to play the game.

---+: hardcore psychedelics (lsd, dmt, psilocyben): Smash will be very strange. Very very strange.

*Seriously, don't do drugs. They're dangerous and will likely mess up your game. If you're smart you won't reply with how awesome pot makes your game. You never know who may be reading this stuff.

I'm better at Brawl when I'm drunk, but that just says something about Brawl. It helps me get into that lazy, lethargic, campy mode that the game encourages.

However, I love RedBull 30 mins before a Melee match, cos then I be on fire.

See... it's like this man...

What about love?
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww cuuuuuuuute <3.

If anything, it'll f*** your performance up. Daydreaming and thinking with your d*** doesn't help you in a match. Coz Smash is serious business.

I tried drunken Halo once. I thought I was doing good, but apparently I was just spinning the character in a circle in one of those hover things shooting randomly.

The only song I'd want playing is "How a ***** eat", the badass tune made of Kimbo soundbytes.

I have played Brawl against people that made like Mario and ate some Super Shrooms. From what they said later, they couldn't find their character and when they did the game distorted itself to the point where it was unplayable. Fun for them, but not for lil' ol' sober me :ohwell:

Huh.
I didn't realize Brawl moved fast enough for drugs to effect your game play.
Depressants make it easier. You actually move at the pace of the game. Drunk Bawrl ftw.

I've actually played people in that state who were able to play just fine. People on AMT can also play. This varies from person to person but... college... I saw some crazy stuff.

LSD and DMT completely destroy your game.

Funny but completely and totally untrue.

I may make this article more detailed in regards to specific substances and what they do.

Why is User Blogs filled to the brim with Brawl hate? .... Get OVER yourselves.

Anways:

Interesting and kind of odd thread. I have what you might call a phobia of bizarre chemicals in my body, so I'm not gonna be using most of those any time soon.

Music that's powerful enough to give me goosebumps should definitely have some psychological effect. I predict a positive one. DragonForce lawl!

Btw, is it true that if you have ADD or ADHD, caffeine has an opposite or nonexistent effect? If it is, I might have a slight case. It always feels like caffeine puts me to sleep O_o

EDIT: You oughtta be a smash researcher, Verill. I was just reading about your God DI

I loled irl.
As opposed to in fake life?

Yeah, it helps eliminate the boredom of waiting 10 minutes for you to land after you jump. You feel as if it's only been 10 seconds. Thus, you're more attentive.

:D

I thought of the same thing when I was reading this.

Because a lot of Melee fans/Brawl haters visit here?

And there's nothing to get over. We hate Brawl. GET OVER IT.

should epic music work? I plan on buying a ipod for the mere purpose of pumping me up for a match.
Actually I prefer listening to music a lot with smash. Especially quick paced songs. It does help me. sometimes my fingers just get lazy and sluggish, but when I listen to a fast song that I really enjoy, my game is improved, and I chain moves together smoother. Then again music always helps me to do a variety of things smoother than I would without the music. The music also keeps me from getting tense and keeps my mind clear, keeps me from having brain farts or thinking "Oh ****" . I guess it just alters my mindset, and hearing a fast paced beat of something I enjoy keeps my reflexes sharp.

I actually like Brawl better... "puts up flame shield"

Actually, just don't f***ing flame my blog.

As someone with ADD, I can say that is false. I applied to be a smash researcher and I'm glad you feel that way. :bee:

What if you really needed to go to the bathroom, and the only way you'd be able to go was if you beat your opponent. Would you play better?

No.

Unless you peed on your opponent. Preferably if he's DDD infiniting your DK.

Someone should test that out... Breaking out of DDD's infinite... an unorthodox method.

I've had my fair share of drug enhanced smash endeavors, so heres my 2 cents.

MDMA massively inhibits focus, but improves reactions and movement. Its fun for melee friendlies, makes brawl less than unbearable, but it isn't good for tournament use.
At 1st plateau it is a viable performance enhancer, but beyond that, you're suffering from inability to concentrate.
First time I rolled hardcore was actually in a tournament. I was playing horribly on account of my eyes wandering everywhere, my jaw quivering and being distracting, and brawl being ******. In a set against my friend, I kept yelling "Deva, stop sandbagging me! Just **** me, this is embarrassing!" I have my pride even when fuxed up. Then I gave everyone hugs. >_>; Do a controllable amount of MDMA if you plan on using it at a tournament. <_< >_>;

Amphetamines are, obviously, amazing for smash. Definitely the way to go. Don't take any type of amphetamine more than 2 weeks apart though, its a really bad habit to form, and building tolerances is a nuisance. 3rd plateau amphetamine use produces interesting effects with smash. Stick to 1st and 2nd for amphetamines.

Hallucinogens at lower plateaus act similarly to amphetamines, but beyond that, its horribly pointless. More specifically shrooms. I haven't tried it with LSD, DMT, or anything else tight(er than shrooms). I quit drugs recently so I doubt I ever will. =[

I feel awkward categorizing alcohol intoxication by plateaus, but 1st plateau inebriation is a decent anti-anxiety tool, and doesn't inhibit your reflexes that much, if at all. Just like 1 or 2 beers here, depending on size.

Cigarettes are good for anti-anxiety if you aren't a regular smoker.

Smash on DXM is weird. I was reduced to complete instinct, had no idea what I was doing, but I was ****** my sober friend who normally goes about even with me in friendlies. I didn't even know I was ******. He told me "Shane, you're so ****ing good. Your this ****ed up and still doing this well?" I was just like "UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAH"
