I'm not gonna overreact and say that TLOU didn't deserve GOTY (well maybe), but the accolades and pretentious bull**** surrounding its writing is a bunch of crap. This is the game that we decide is the current epitome of video game media writing? A B-list movie script with concepts and ideas already driven into the ground? TLOU's character moments are great, don't get me wrong here, but hearing it being called the Citizen Kane of video games is insanity. Especially when the "game" part of that is average at best.

That's not even talking about how the possibility for TLOU to even be written as a movie says a lot about the game's failings as a narrative built on the unique foundations of interactive design.

@above, video game reviewers are ridiculously unintelligent, and blast around "the citizen kane of video games", without actually knowing why the hell citizen kane was huge. All they know is, "its an old ass movie + everybody liked it" "THIS GAME IS CITIZEN KANE GUYS"

Remember how hyped everyone was for watchdogs, then it came out and it sucked and everyone forgot about it a week later? The same thing would have happened to TLOU, but "muh progressiveness!!!"

aye. it doesn't help that the gameplay is always at odds with the story; one of what would be the most tense moments in that game, that showed your powerlessness, came right around the same time you're given a flamethrower complete with a shot of the protag smirking

the game doesn't know if it wants to be something taken seriously, or a AAA game

The fact that gamers are pretentious as hell, wanting desperately to elevate their hobby into art, does not mean The Last of Us is guilty of it as well.

It's a good game with a good cinematic presentation. Story and gameplay are almost always at odds in some way in videogames, this isn't a new problem, what Jim Sterling has called ludonarrative dissonance. One random example is striking people dead in Fire Emblem: Awakening and the next scene your talking with the defeated like nothing happened, absolutely no injuries!

Games by Naughty Dog should be a mix of silly and serious, that's what makes them fun.

I'm not saying TLOU is bad or even mediocre, just that I find that it's absolutely not top tier material. The response to that game is more of a problem with the culture, namely the people who think having games become more cinematic is beneficial. Not that cinematic games are a bad thing, but it's not the end goal that gaming narrative should achieve.

citizen kane changed the way critics and movie makers perceived movies as an artistic concept. the last of us just aped what movies do in cutscenes and gets confused when it doesn't translate into good gameplay

I'm a bit disapointed, I never really understood why people could think she-hulk would be allowed in smash but I was hype for it anyway. Now i realized they all just want another sword swinging, JRPG pretty boy.

Xenoblade deserves better than Shulk, and the Lucina reveal already proves that protagonists like Chrom don't automatically equal character spots, so a much better guy or girl can be included if they felt like it.

On the topic of Naughty Dog, I found the Uncharted series to be a solid series of games, but nothing really Game of the Year 10/10 rock-your-socks-off kind of deal. It was basically just a more polished Tomb Raider until Tomb Raider finally got it right with the reboot.

Also, regenerating health is just stupid, unless there's a really good explanation for why it's there (energy shield recharging or robot repairing itself). But this is just a regular dude. I shouldn't be eating bullets like I'm 50 Cent.

Lucina was a protagonist though. She had equal importance to about everyone in the story. At least, most games, including Xenoblade Chronicles, don't have "side characters" with as much importance and/or involvement to the story as Lucina did in FE: Awakening.

I really don't understand the hate for Shulk. Is he such a cancerous being that you just can't stand him existing in any other shape or form in a different game? I know he's pretty 2D as a character, but so are a lot of Nintendo character lol. Plus, he has a cool sword.

Nintendo protagonists may not have a lot of depth personality-wise, but they are full of character, energy and defined by the fun actions they perform in their games.

There is a reason most platform heroes are lame and unmemorable while Nintendo's cast of characters stand the test of time.
