Well let me start off by saying that I'm generally fine with episodes 1-3. Most people complain that the anime cut off a lot of stuff, but I personally thought it was anything major. The censorship was insanely frustrating in episode 2 though, but at the time I didn't think anything of it.
Oh but episode 4. Episode ****ing 4.
The manga itself isn't all that great, it's a fun thriller/action manga at best with a bit of a shounen here and there. It's an interesting premise, but it isn't anything groundbreaking, but it's a fun read nevertheless. And it does have its moments. Tokyo Ghoul has plenty of interesting arcs here and there and the design choices they have sometimes is great.
Now the problem here is that Tokyo Ghoul is a pretty bloody manga. Its not like purposefully gory, but it uses blood whenever it feels like it. It adds flavor to certain scenes, and I can appreciate when they use it.
The anime throws that out the ****ing window for the sake of censorship. The pacing is also incredibly messy. The anime, for what it looks like right now, are doing some of the arcs all out of order. This messed up the pacing bad, because certain arcs were meant to be put before others. For example (I assume you know something about the arcs), the Mado arc was either moved or completely skipped (which is dumb because it's easily one of the better arcs of the entire arc) and the Gourmet arc was forward instead. The Gourmet arc takes some instances from the Mado arc, but of course since the Mado arc didn't happen yet they butchered parts of the Gourmet arc in the anime. From what it looks like, if they keep putting the arcs out of order, censoring more, and just skipping scenes entirely, I can't see Tokyo Ghoul becoming a decent anime at all.
As for the manga itself, it gets pretty interesting. Chapter 61 to I think chapter 64 or something is pretty awesome. You should read it.
