When it comes to rice, the costs of rice vary based on the type of rice you buy.
Like around here, Jasmine Rice is more expensive than plain white rice, while Sticky rice is also more expensive than both while having the same flavor of the latter.
The biggest issue with cooking for yourself is getting over the initial hurdle that being self-sufficient in that regard is placed in front of you.
You need to learn how to cook, and you need to not only buy the ingredients, but also buy the seasonings, buy the tools, and whatever misc items you might need to either speed up the process or to enhance the final result.
On top of that you need to allocate the time to actually cook your food, and at first you're going to spend a lot more time working on **** because you dont know what to do and you're mostly going to be following instructions.
But honestly, if you can somehow get past that, the amount of money and time you save is pretty staggering.
I speak for myself when I say I get a lot of food for cheap, that lasts significantly longer than eating out, and doesnt take much longer than driving out to buy food and come back to eat warm food.
I couldnt say that about myself 5+ years ago.
