I can see all your points, except for the one about the enforced statics-- at least recently they've allowed everyone to run in coil at any time impartial of any statics.
That may or may not have been added before I quit, I don't remember. It's been a minute.

Some particular fights can run different setups (things that normally would use two tanks, but people make workarounds to only use one, for example. But there still needs to be a tank, which I think is what your point is. Tanks can be pretty DPS-y though, for those accessory slots you're not forced to wear tank stuff, you could wear DPS stuff and be more of a high-aggro DPS.)

I do lowman strats to sell endgame runs to people who are unable to do it (albeit kind of overpriced for how hard it actually is when you know how to do it.) Basically make them die in the beginning and 7-man instead of 8-man it.
Kind of? I did all that stuff - solo tanked some primals and such, had STR gear (and often ran 30 STR) for my WAR, merced gear for gil, etc. But that's still pretty "in the box" - you're geared to a point where you can sacrifice one stat or a party slot for another to improve efficiency. I'm talking about doing 8 man content with 4 people, or 2, or 1, potentially with specialized setups.

[collapse=stuff]I like figuring out how to break games. Odd setups, low level runs, that sort of thing. FFXI was ripe for this sort of exploitation. High level play often used unintended tanking setups (or even just had 1/2 DDs tanking; against fodder mobs you might have no designated tank at all), lowman runs were extremely common, and many players would solo high level monsters for challenge and profit. Many of us developed strategies for 6-18 (party/alliance in XI) man progression content that used half that many or even fewer still.

You won't see much of that sort of thing in XIV. It does exist (vid is of an AK solo in 2.16), but to a much more limited extent and not against the same caliber of content. Solo tank and/or solo heal is about as adventurous as it generally gets in progression content. Less opportunity and much less reward for true lowman strats, mostly just the chance to merc a party slot.

Tangentially, I had the pleasure of knowing the guy in that vid when I played XIV. Had a few friends in the same FC. Great guy.

I miss that sort of freedom and creativity. There was still content I did with a full party/alliance for various reasons, yeah, but we had a lot of fun optimizing strategies for each bit of content (and there was a fair bit of it, since XI ran closer to a horizontal progression model at the time). I also miss playing my favorite class ever, but that's a story for another time.[/collapse]

Speaking of breaking things. If I do illegal-ish stuff for Dolphin (just enough for PM), do I receive the ominous letters from my ISP, or do I have to do LOTS of illegal-ish things for that to happen?
Edit: made even more vague

Probably.

I'm pretty sure Time Warner Cable employees faint every single month after seeing my usual internet browsing.

Some games are more breakable than others.
It at least still feels good when you're one of the first to clear things, but that's about as rewarding as the rewards get.
It's one thing to break the game/laws of the game for fun, it's another to actually accomplish something out of doing it that you couldn't do before. And as it stands, there is no real reward for doing things with less people assuming everyone involved is on the same page, as you can divvy loot as you need to. So other than mercing/selling content runs, there isn't really any other purpose to running more or less members, which I guess is what you're wanting?

Pretty much everything in this game gives MORE benefit for bringing MORE members, but what you want is more benefit for less and the ability to do less, since that could be harder?

The game-breaking things for the most part have been patched-- and when I talk breaking I mean Ramuh EX Titan-Egi/Topaz Carbuncle strat. Sad to see that go, but still. (Short explanation: All of Ramuh's attacks are magic damage, and pets take highly reduced magic damage, so tanking using the summoner/arcanist high-aggro pet made the trial a faceroll.)

Some of the solo-tank strats early on require DPS tanking mobs instead of tanks or pets (E.G. Dragoon/Monk tanking one of the snakes in t5, bard tanking a golem in t9) but I figure that's not really the point you're trying to make there either-- you can't just go tankless or healerless and get away with it is the point. Which is true, and somewhat unfortunate for the more explorative people like yourself.

Basically the game leaves little to be explored and options are limited, so the fights are much more streamlined and you dislike that. Which is all true and I can see why you would, and it does leave some desire as far as content output goes as well, like you said. I agree.

But I haven't really seen another MMO do much better than them honestly lol
Leaving a lot to be explored gives way to a lot of faceroll content and clearing endgame raids without putting in much effort, which is a step in the wrong direction imo. It's very hard to leave room to explore and make it allow more or less party members, able to discard class roles, without at some point making things too easy.

EDIT: Is this type of question even allowed?

I'm sure its not.
I've seen things like this vaguely mentioned in the forums before by Smashboards staff in their own threads. You aren't supposed to host files that could get the site into trouble or link to sites that do that.

I'm just asking. If I do things, does Charter communications send a letter to my parents.

Loving this Squirtle salt

Stop arguing with Bleck. That is my job.

Freaking psych chapter talking about 14 year olds in college. Already behind the curve. Still haven't surpassed other 15 year old Smashers.

Edit: decided to form an obsession studying Lunchables sets. Going to get netplay just so I can fight him and destroy him using my extensive studies. I will become a worthy archnemesis.
Just make sure you have above decent ping or he may just quit mid match

Oh yeah, off topic, but For Glory is awful

dunno, something about getting beat twice due to input lag and jank only to have your opponent change their tag to "LOL" then leave to never see them again really rustles my jimmies.

makes me feel like a salty kid

oh wait

I have never felt closer to Hell itself than I did while playing Little Mac against a lagged spin-spam Sanic.

Lol Smash Flash 2 getting at Apex.
It had a little room that like 4 people went to last year. Let's not be envious of it, it's not really that great of a spot.

Although, the snarky comments about it being in are great.

...Although... I gotta say, I think I prefer the Smash Flash 2 Menu theme to the PM one. I can't believe I admitted to liking something in Smash Flash, kinda gagged.

I dont think anyone is envious of SSF2.

People are just upset at the recent incidents and are now only speaking with their feels instead of sitting down and thinking before posting.

SSF2 has a booth. Not a bracket. They're also a standalone fan-game that is made for PC and requires no exploit to be run. They're also non-profit and standalone fangames were greenlit by Nintendo.

It's really not surprising at this point at SSF2 being in good standings with APEX.

Not as such. What I want is for the game to allow for and reward creativity. Lowman strats are an expression of that goal that rewards both skill at the game and creative application of the tools provided, rather than the goal itself.

Kind of like how I talk about Mewtwo a lot here. I find his 20XX stuff interesting and feel he's one of the more underutilized characters in PM. I'm more interested in figuring him out and spreading that information than I am in actually winning a tournament with him myself.

Basically the game leaves little to be explored and options are limited, so the fights are much more streamlined and you dislike that. Which is all true and I can see why you would, and it does leave some desire as far as content output goes as well, like you said. I agree.
So this, yeah.

By contrast, I wouldn't necessarily be bothered by things like that Ramuh patch. Strategies that clearly supersede everything else because of low or nonexistent risk aren't really rewarding in the sense that I'm talking about. It's amusing the first time or two, but not satisfying to employ in the long term and nobody's really sad to see them go. Kinda like the time where a patch broke cures vs undead...

This is a very real possibility, yes. MMOs have a regular update cycle though; the dev team doesn't have to anticipate everything. If they approach content design with an open mind rather than focusing on keeping the playerbase within a heavily restricted vision of the game, who knows what could happen?

We may never find out. :p

I'm also keenly aware that I'm something of a minority in their target demographic, though I'd make the case that they don't really lose anything by allowing for this sort of gameplay. Much like how casual and competitive can coexist in Smash.

You know you have a problem when you're playing a Flash game and there's the usual jump, crouch/crawl, and move options. You then notice the dash option. You think back to your Smash tech skill and realize you can dash cancel using crouch as to mitigate the dash cooldown/endlag.

On a different note, has anyone noticed that with the influx of new members to Smashboards in general has come with a lot of fresh blood to Smash...period?

Like worse than brawl. It seems like there is a greater amount of people that dont know **** about the community and its established history, traditions, and norms, and also feel compelled to comment in regards to that ****.
Yeah I noticed this slightly but I'm barely in the smash 4 forums at all as of late so I barely notice.

I dont think so. The competitive community started pretty much with Melee, so there were no standards or norms within the community, that and the community was much smaller, and general forum etiquette was different back then.

With Brawl, there came an influx of players that knew little about the community, and that's fine, but there were some who made comments in regards to the community that were pretty ignorant and unfounded and could have avoided them getting blown up if they had just lurked more and had better forum etiquette.

Brawl newcomers was still pretty good overall.

Now, with Smash 4. It feels like the newcomers are akin to SRK 09ers. Saying stuff about things that they wouldnt say had they opted to not post 2 mins after registering and instead just learned more about the community, and not just their game.

The most recent example I feel is in the Mayflash adapter thread in the news section. There is a post about Mayflash being low quality and a post trying to criticize the news poster about posting a mayflash adapter thread without testing it because a bunch of people will take his post as an endorsement, but that makes a huge assumption about a majority of the community, of whom are not 2 days old and know better already.
Brawl newcomers were so so with me being one of those folks but yeah we were good lol. And damn with the new cats being on SRK 09er status.

Yeah it's a bit absurd.

But I've never had a particularly strong view with the Brawl newcomers, so it's a bit disconcerting that as I browse the Smash 4 forums, the main thing that comes to mind is "SRK 09ers"

and here i am playing megaman and just stopping everything with lemons.
Lemons are the best. They're the closest thing to falco lasers in a game where most projectiles require heavy commitment.
The best is crossing them up with walking lemons and proceeding to mega upper them as they turn around confused.

Guys, you know how the first two Zelda games don't have pots to break?
What if, because the Zelda timeline is ****ed, it's because past Links broke ALL THE POTS?

Are you serious right now? Is it zero or the normal landing. If it is zero I quit Smashbros that game is busted.
Megaman's nair is essentially jumping buster.

His buster attacks (jab, nair, ftilt) work exactly like they do in his games, meaning that he can jump/move while shooting lemons. As a result, nair has 0 frames of landing lag, but suffers from buster shot cooldown; however the latter is indirectly negated by retreating and/or jumping to prevent yourself from being punished.

So yeah, while it has 0 frames of landing lag, it still has attack cooldown.

It's still really ****ing good.
