Pummels are really hit and miss as a mechanic. For some characters individually that have good quick combo/kill/etc throws, pummeling is relevant because mashing risks throwing off DI if the grabber throws early, and the threat of that can scare people into not mashing as hard as they could and taking more damage.
But there are characters with no throws that are either fast enough to not be reactable once the throw animation itself starts, or with throws that aren't a very big threat when misDI'd. And then there's also the fact that you should always be mashing face buttons anyways so that part of the mechanic is still unnecessarily there to extend the length of possible pummeltime for stupid opponents only. Melee/PM are also in a weird place where the extra 3/6/9 damage you could get off the pummels doesn't matter that much because avoiding a return to neutral during your punishment is more feasible so you don't have to fish for awkward kills very often where that little percent makes the difference. The valuable interplay to the mechanic is the whole stick mashing vs DIing part, where the grabber can risk the release for extra damage and the grabbed can risk extra damage for good DI, so the whole face button mashing thing is just there because...? Also stick mashing on analog sticks really shortens their lifespans....
That said, PM doesn't really need to go reinventing that formula, I just want to have it where pummels are usable under like 70%.
