-the menus in general being too Brawl-like (okay I'm being nitpicky here but it still bugs me)
The Brawl menu screen was used in Kid Icarus: Uprising. I guess it's just something that works for Sakurai and his team.

Thanks for the info.

Really? Stabbing with that giant blade? If anyone should be stabbing (a lot) it should be Marth. It'd make sense since, for whatever reason, Falchion resembles a sword - not a broadsword, katana, longsword, etc. - or even a short sword in SSB. Generally with short swords and daggers, you'd want to stab more than slash since those kinds of blades don't have that range or lethality to cause a ton of damage with slashing. Hell, the way Ike uses Ragnell, he cleaves, hacks, and crushes which makes sense for a two-handed sword and as a reference to his style. Now I feel like Lucina should have received Marth's moveset since Falchion in Awakening was a bit longer and resembled a longsword and Marth should have received a fencing-styled moveset.

Then again, this is a game and for those that play Devil May Cry, you all know about Dante's infamous stab with a giant blade. Speaking of which, Shulk is now a "wannabe Dante". Trying to look all cool and stuff by not holding his sword and drawing it to start an attack. :p

I expected Shulk to use more of a two-handed stance akin to kendo practitioners.
i think they made him sheath the sword so it does not take up a lot of room or maybe to decrease the particles on screen since its not a solid blade, shulk fights with it out in xenoblade.

I'm loving the roster so far but it'll be a disappointment if none of the big 3 make it in. That's basically Sakurai ignoring fan requests and you can guarantee that people will be complaining about if for years.

Ignoring characters for a second, is anyone else's disappointed when it comes to the other content?

-series like Metroid, DK, Sonic and WarioWare only getting old stages from Brawl
-no Event Matches
-no traditional Break the Targets or Board the Platforms
-no Adventure Mode
-no Stage Builder
-several series being snubbed when it comes to content in general (Star Fox in particular got hit hard)
-the drab looking CSS and SSS (though I'll wait and see how the final version looks)
-the menus in general being too Brawl-like (okay I'm being nitpicky here but it still bugs me)

Frankly aside from Falcondorf and no Mewtwo/DK rep, the above is probably far more important to me than the actual roster.
This is why i believe the wii u smash bros. will be the better version :4pacman:

Just a couple things:
1. Break the targets was most likely replaced by Target Blast, plus there's a break the targets minigame in smash run.
2. Smash Run probably replaced Adventure Mode.
Also note not everything has been shown.

I thought it was just a laser sword from the pictures and gameplay I've seen. Does it really sparkle? Shulk could also hold it in a way that would prevent from taking a lot of space.

its hard to please everyone, no matter who gets in or is left out some people are gonna be disappointed

it might, the video quality was terrible, the sword was the source of some really small slow down in my experience with xenoblade so if its down the same way in ssb that could be the reason he keeps it sheathed

Wow, I guess you really see no character you like on there. It's too bad that in a roster of 52, you can't find a single character you like. (if we're taking clones out of the equation, there's still 49 to choose from)
The irony here being that all three of his mains are in the game and two of them have been in since game 1. Also, one of the clones he's complaining about is literally a slight alternate of one of his mains. So, you think he'd be happy. To be honest, I think he's just trying to stir up trouble at this point. A lot of those arguments are being parroted from other posts and are somewhat contradictory; not to mention some of the blatant factual inaccuracies in his posts.

So that explains why he's just been showing off menu stuff? I honestly think the guy is blowing off steam because he refused to show off his characters before they were leaked.
:p I used to feel bad for him, but honestly, it's on him for the delay of information. He should of seen this coming.
That's pretty much what he was showing before. Considering we have PAX and a Direct coming up tomorrow, it makes sense that he wouldn't be throwing out any big reveals, leaked or otherwise.

I've only seen the Shulk videos once, and I can only remember seeing an Air Slash like Marth's and a spinning move like Link's.
Air Slash does resemble Dolphin Slash, but if the video is anything to go by, it goes higher, and that is what Air Slash looks like in Xenoblade. Air Slash just has a second slash at the end in Xenoblade. In the video, Shulk is intercepted by the ledge, so maybe he does preform the additional slash, or maybe he does it upon connecting with the rising swipe. As for the spinning move, it more closely resembles Roy's down smash in Project M than it does Link's Spin Attack.

Shulk does slash a lot more in Xenoblade, and 2 of his stronger arts (Back Slash and Monado Buster) are overhead sword swings with both hands. I'd assume him stabbing in Smash is to balance out the range of his weapon. We haven't seen his entire moveset though, and I'd be surprised if Buster wasn't used.

Alright, can we please stop referring to Dr. Mario and Dark Pit as clones when we literally know NOTHING of their playstyle in this game?
Why would they be grouped at the end of the roster instead of with their respective franchises otherwise?

Dr. Mario is probably going to retain his Down+B (so no FLUDD) and have his Pills, but retain the same Mario moveset for the most part.

Dark Pit will probably be a Luigi Pit.

You people do realize that because the leaks real there will be no more character reveals until after the jpn release.
There's only 2 weeks until the game releases. The only character who would make sense to reveal still is Wario.

The leaks have nothing to do with the lack of reveals. We weren't getting anymore anyway unless they did a massive final reveal of everything. We have the starting roster already, except Wario.

The leak is real, the roster is full. No Ridley, K Rool, Mewtwo. Instead: Mario-in-coat, Duck-and-bird, and Marth-with-wig. Rostergate 2014 is definitive. Sakurai and Namco should be ashamed of the awful choices in making this vomit of a roster select screen.
Is it vomit because it doesn't have a villain that would have to use its most recent model and would never work, a villain who Nintendo doesn't acknowledge now and another Mega-Evolving Pokemon? Every character can be broken down to something stupid sounding.

Not having 3 you want, and having 3 you don't does not magically destroy the other 40+ characters.

I can think of a few differences between male and female wii fit trainer (boobs, pecs) and yet they are alts.

I can't wait until people try to find a difference in water ranger on the fludd that Mario uses vs the one that Mario-in-coat uses.

Duck Hunt Dog is it's own character instead of being an assist trophy. "But he has a unique play style!" Sorry, but something about NOT EVEN HAVING HIS OWN NAME says to me that there would have been far, far, far, far, far, far, FAR better choices to include in an ALL STAR GAME.

There was less than zero excuse not to include all of the hype 3, let alone NONE OF THEM.
I'm sorry, but, it's like you don't even know what you're saying.

- Visual differences is not what Sakurai was talking about, and you know it. He was talking about if they wanted to change the moveset, or felt that the character could be slightly different aside from looking/sounding different.

- Why are you assuming Dr. Mario will have FLUDD? The difference making him a character is that he'd most likely NOT have Fludd, and have a different Down+B, and keep the visual changes of Fireballs to Pills.

- You're suggesting that DUCK HUNT, as in, one of the games that older fans know just as much as Mario (since a lot of people owned the dual-cartridge) and was bundled in with NES at one point, is not an All-Star thing. Whether you like it or not, Duck Hunt is just as important and "all-star" as Mr. Game & Watch and R.O.B. He's the very definition of a Nintendo All-Star in a game that is celebrating its rich history. And as someone who is absolutely pissed at the removal of Ice Climbers, he makes a HECK OF A LOT MORE SENSE than they did to represent NES as a whole since nobody even knew what the hell they were. Same with Lucas. You want to complain about non-All-Stars getting in, IC & Lucas (two of my faves in Brawl) are not well known at all.

- You gotta let the "hype 3" thing go. They had just as much of a chance as any Assist Trophy getting promoted or Takamaru. There was no reason to expect them.

You seem to forget that the character inclusion is not just based on "WHO DO PEOPLE WANT/WHO IS GOOD?"

It's based on the ability to actually make them.

Did it ever occur to you that all 3 of them were, at some point planned, but then something got in the way? Either problems with their movesets, problems with getting them to work the way they wanted, problems making them FUN or interesting, or simply running out of time?

Clones are added AFTER the fact. So none of them even factor into this. The cuts? Probably also due to time constraints.

Brawl cut Mewtwo & Roy at the last second, and had Toon Zelda, Dixie & maybe Plusle+Minun planned but scrapped early in development, and Villager and Mii were planned at one point.

Melee was going to have different NES characters, Lucas, Wolf and I think more Kirby characters.

And we already know that Chrom was considered originally for SSB4.

So obviously, a lot of characters go through a process and get considered and even worked on, but ultimately don't make it.

So you can ***** all you want, but there's a possibility all of the characters you're mad about WERE planned/worked on/considered, but ultimately were unable to be done. **** sucks. Get over it.

Air Slash resembling Dolphin Slash? Tons of characters use sword uppercuts in games. Not a big deal in my opinion, but I can't say for others.

As for Shulk's range. They could, y'know, scale his sword down. I mean, size isn't much of problem. Right, Ridley? :p

Or just make his attacks be weaker or have less knock-back. I don't know, balance it.

There is no excuse for this atrocious roster. "Slightest difference means a character gets it's own slot rather than being an alt". Poppycock. I can think of a few differences between male and female wii fit trainer (boobs, pecs) and yet they are alts. Dr Mario is Mario in a coat. He is literally the definition of an alternate costume. And yet there he is, with his face looking at me on the character select screen.

I'm sorry. But I fail to see how playing as Mario in a coat warrants it's own roster spot. Any Pokeball or AT would have been a better choice. I can't wait until people try to find a difference in water ranger on the fludd that Mario uses vs the one that Mario-in-coat uses.

"Oh, the roster might not even be final though! All star mode!" You're right. Mii Fighter hasn't been unlocked yet. Shulk will then move up finishing the 2nd lowest row, which likely means Shulk is a clone of something too. Then, the bottom row will be Mii and the third parties.

Half this roster is clones, and ZERO of the hype three are included. And Mario-in-coat is included as it's own character. What if real all-star games worked like that? "And for the East All-Stars...um...some team's water boy."

This roster includes Megaman and Pacman, which is fantastic. But there was zero excuse to cut Wolf, Ice Climbers, or Lucas. There was less than zero excuse not to include all of the hype 3, let alone NONE OF THEM. I'm sure game play wise, this game will be a blast. But just ONCE I'd like a Smash game to not produce so much disappointment upon the full roster's reveal. This feels like the dreaded 35 character ROB roster all over again. People trying to rationalize how Ridley could be DLC, how the "forbidden 7" (thus Mewtwo) could be DLC, how K Rool could be DLC if Nintendo got the Kremlings back...

I had so much hope this time around. It didn't seem like they could get away with gimping the roster this time. But here we are. Still only two DK reps. Still only two Metroid reps (and only one character). And Star Fox LOSES a rep...and the non-clone one at that! Meanwhile, Japan gets catered to by receiving the Duck Hunt Dog (doesn't even have a name) and the entire Fire Emblem franchise.

Sakurai: "Japan, you get everybody from the newest release of your favorite series. America? Ah, I see you want what you call the "hype three". Ridley? K Rool? Mewtwo? Hmmm...I decide...you get nary. I guess i'll also pour on two reps from KI because I made it. Also...no Ice Climbers and piles of clones because the 3DS version and stuff. Enjoy Super Smash Bros: Fire Emblem."
Long post incoming.

First of all, calm down.

The Wii Fit Trainer's gender doesn't affect their hitbox, and are you forgetting Dr. Mario's been a character before? Why are you complaining about him being in a Smash game when he's been in one before? Why aren't you complaining about that decision instead? Obviously, going off how Dr. Mario played in Melee, he's pretty much a stronger version of Mario. Both have the same dashing speed and falling speed, yet most of Dr. Mario's attacks deal greater damage and knockback than Mario's. He also has a slightly faster air speed, rendering his combo potential and aerial approach superior. Also, I doubt he'll use F.L.U.D.D.

Last Christmas, Sakurai said in in interview that they were having a lot of trouble getting the Ice Climbers to work in the 3DS version of the game, so there's a good chance they'd be cut. It's hard for the 3DS to process a character (Nana) that constantly follows another (Popo) and when they get separated, them doing their own thing while trying to run back to the character they're supposed to follow. The differences with Rosalina and Luma is that Luma always acts on its own and only comes back to Rosalina if she calls for it. It pretty much acts like a separate character. And the Duck Hunt Dog (which is called Duck Hunt in the game, BTW. JUST like how the Ice Climbers aren't just called Popo & Nana) has the bird fly right above it at all times, so it literally never separates, and grabs it and uses it for certain attacks. (one of the leakers said this) Since the roster was meant to be the same in both versions of the game, it makes sense to come to the conclusion that they couldn't find a solution and they were forced to cut them from the roster.

As for the other characters getting cut, I agree with you on the fact of Wolf getting cut, but I honestly couldn't care about Lucas being cut as long as Ness was still in (which he is). It was obvious Snake, Ivysaur, and Squirtle were getting cut before the game was even announced.

If you've seen the leaked footage, then it's obvious about Shulk not being a clone. Yes, he has a similar down areal in Link and a similar Up Special in Marth, but he can fire a laser from his sword, and one of the leakers said that his main focus is his modes with the Monado, with him dealing but taking more damage, taking but dealing less damage, and more. This can be seen briefly in the leaked video too when Shulk suddenly has a kanji symbol behind him.

As for how many clones are in the game, there are 3 clones and 4 semi-clones. All 3 clones are grouped together near the bottom like you said, but the semi-clones are grouped with their respective franchises. Since the other 2 clones are grouped with Lucina, it can be assumed that they were also originally meant to be alternate costumes but had changes in them that made them separate characters, just like Lucina.

This isn't the final roster, either. All the leakers said this isn't the final roster, and All-Star Mode is locked. The Miis are unlocked, and they don't show up unless you turn customization on. It's off in the screenshots, hence why they aren't on the roster. There's between 1 and 5 characters left. I'd personally say somewhere between 1 and 3.

As for who these characters are, I highly doubt it's the Big Three. It's obvious that Mewtwo's never coming back unless fan demand convinces Sakurai, and Ridley's too big. I can see King K. Rool being in Smash, but I doubt he's in this one. Dixie's more likely anyways. I also don't see Roy being in another Smash as his entire presence in Melee was to promote his own game.

As for the Donkey Kong and Metroid reps, you act like they've always had 2. They had 1 each in the original and Melee, and didn't get a 2nd until Brawl. Technically, Metroid only had 1 in Brawl anyways since ZSS was another form of Samus, but now they're separate characters, so it's definitely too. While I agree that DK should get a 3rd rep, I think Metroid's fine with 2. A 3rd wouldn't hurt, though.

Speaking of a certain amount of reps hurting, what's wrong with 4 Fire Emblem characters? How is this Super Smash Bros.: Fire Emblem when Mario has 7 reps (11 if you count DK, Yoshi, and Wario, as they're pretty much just sub-series) and Zelda has 5? Kid Icarus isn't that far behind either; it has 3. You are literally saying that 4 characters from one franchise make up a large amount of a roster of 49 + 1-5 characters when there are 2 franchises that have more than that.

I'm honestly very happy with this roster. It's not perfect, (no Smash roster, official or fan-made, will ever be) but this has a lot of characters with unique playstyles, especially the newcomers. Just be happy this game even exists.

I'm going to bet that this is off-topic now, since I've been working on this response for a little bit.

Ignoring fan requests, eh?
  • Gameplay is sped up
  • Online is improved
  • Random tripping is removed
  • All new characters (excluding the clones, which appear to be ascended alternate costumes that were added possible due to a lot of time remaining, but not enough for a new character) have diverse movesets unlike anything introduced thus far
  • Alternate costumes are being expanded upon
  • Gamecube controller compatible with the Wii U version
  • More serious emphasis is being placed on balancing characters, which was a major issue in Brawl.
  • Mega Man is playable, and he was easily the most requested 3rd party character
  • Palutena is playable, and she was one of the most highly requested additions worldwide
  • Shulk is playable, and he is possibly the most highly requested character in Japan, while still being quite popular everywhere else.
I dunno, skipping out on 3 characters doesn't seem to be a problem anymore :4pacman:

if i remember right he does have a stab or two though. and his up smash where it stabs it into the ground and turns it on could just be because it looks awesome

Yeah, exactly. Having played Xenoblade, it's Smash 4 animation appears to be pretty close to the animation in Xenoblade.

Yeah, he has the upward stab, forward stab, and a move where he thrusts his sword below him in the air.

I'm pretty much satisfied with the roster, I mean Sakurai is doing his best to make this an awesome game, and whatever the outcome of the game, it'll still be great no matter what and I really hope DHD is actually in, who knows, his moveset might be pretty good =) and I hope at least one of the Hype 3 gets in, would like to see Ridley too and I wouldn't mind having him in the game.

I'm sorry if anybody's favorites didn't get in, and if your favorites did, congratulations =)

Good job captain obvious...There has not been a reveal since the robin/lucina reveal which is only one trailer when sakurai clearly stated there were a few left...Btw a few is 3. How else do you keep over a million people interested in a game up until launch? What pots ...lol

Until legitimate video evidence surfaces for DHD and Docta Mario, I still say they were red herrings deliberately made to troll us.

My post was in regards to the roster so your first few points are irrelevant to my claim. I'm fine with all of the characters added but ignoring the top 3 fan requested characters is always going to be a bit of a sour spot for many of the fans and it's a valid reason for some to be disappointed.

Great. They can cry while the rest of us enjoy the game
You don't have to love the roster to enjoy the game. Many people still enjoy melee more than brawl even though the roster is inferior.

It's weird with Ridley and me. I in all honestly have never got far in a Metroid game. I played a lot of them (NES, Zero Mission, Fusion, Prime, Prime Hunters) but I never get far. Ridley however, I simply love his design. He looks so fierce and scary that I just fell in love with him as a villain. I don't want Ridley for the representation but I do want him simply because he looks like a beast to play.

I'd say this roster is pretty solid. The only thing that really bugs me is the exclusion of Lucas and Wolf. Well... that and the clones, but I'll probably use them more than the originals tbh.

"ignoring the top 3 fan requested characters"

Ridley is not an extremely popular request in Japan.

Mewtwo is one of the most most requested worldwide, and the west is arguably one of the biggest markets.

But he's by far one of the most requested in the West, and has been since melee. I think him being excluded is a fair reason for some Western fans to be disappointed and we are a sizable proportion of the fanbase. Not saying he HAS to be in but ignoring the most requested character in the West is a fair reason for some to be disappointed.

Until legitimate video evidence surfaces for DHD and Docta Mario, I still say they were red herrings deliberately made to troll us.
What? Why would they make renders for characters that aren't in the game and send them to ESRB?

Why would a character from a game that sold 28m copies be a red herring?

The "hype 3?" Ridley, a poor man's Bowser who Nintendo hasn't acknowledged in seven years, and a character who was already playable (and terrible) get described as hype?

(I mean Ridley's okay I guess.)

considering the number of available weapons from Kid Icarus that Pit isn't going to use.... I think Dark Pit could be a lot cooler than most people realize.

Sakurai said with Lucina that he wouldn't create a new char unless they were slightly different, so I expect a variation on the moveset, which sounds pretty cool, honestly.

Now Doc, I kinda see being Mario + pills again, but I hope it's a bit more.

Neither was little mac.
Yeah, and that's why Little Mac was chosen. For being an extremely popular western request. I'm not discounting Ridley right now, I'm clarifying that if we're talking worldwide, Ridley is not in the top 3 character requests.

That's true yes, but with Lucina the only difference is she's a slightly different height, and has no sweetspot.

But I do agree, a lot changed for Pit in Uprising in terms of moveset potential, and Pittoo is a great way of using that without changing Pit to much.
