:V

It just looks like chicken scratch to me... XD

Then again, that's how 90% of my drawings look like to me. <_<

I wonder if they look different in other people's eyes... . O_o

I don't like it. :p

The spiral in the center looks really flat and doesn't capture those layers. The texture lines I think could follow the contours better - they kinda remind me of hair now.

Well naturally you are going to be more critical of your own work and notice all the flaws that nag at you more than other people might. I see errors in my drawings that drive me nuts and people think I'm neurotic lol. But you know when you create something you want it to be as perfect as you can get it. You'll probably continuously learn new ways to improve bit by bit and ways to correct the things you don't like in your work.

I think its pretty cool btw. You have a better idea of how to draw a rose than I do lol.

Aye.

I draw and hate every bit of it. I look at some of the videos I made a while back and hate it.

I suppose that's just how it is. And we get better from it. At least, I know I do.

My tablet sucks. It's a choice between that and my mousepad though... so I choose the tablet which is about x4 bigger, but still lacks a lot of control and comfortable use. :x

But no johns, my drawings bad regardless and I know it. XD

@Mzink
I used a reference for the shading. I just used to draw/take pictures of flowers a lot. A rose has a very distinct overlapping pattern, if I could show it in text it'd probably be

()

Assuming that showed up. At least... that's how I see a rose. Probably totally wrong.. haha

EDIT:

Yeah... didn't show up correctly.

Without the vertical line I guess? :s

EDIT2:

Aww screw it.... I can't properly show it using text.

I usually can't tell if my art looks ok right after drawing it :( I sometimes have to leave it for a couple weeks and then look at it again. Then I can't tell what exactly is wrong with it.

Draw guidelines first next time susa. Draw the layers as close to the original as possible without worrying about overlapping or mess lines, that way you'll be able to capture that overlapping of petals easier.

And yeah usually when I look at my own stuff I can see a million things wrong with them, and if I wasn't so lethargic i'd probably never finish touching up my stuff. Also what global said rings true for me too, usually I wait overnight to 'refresh' my views on my stuff.

Guidelines have only managed to confuse and irritate me. If I use them it's more for proportion reasons of "wow that looks waaaaaaaaaay off..."

I've literally spent over 3 hours trying to draw guidelines for a head/face..............I crumbled the paper and went to bed after that frustrated. :<

Practice drawing guidelines? oo

Although it may be my bias from the artistic side of my family (my aunt, her husband, and all their children on my father's side of the family) lol...

My uncle used to be a professional artist, and my cousin's been drawing for over 17 years and has never used guidelines... neither have my other two cousin's whom are both younger who have been drawing far less.

:V I was raised around artists who didn't use guidelines... and I myself find them hard to use... or even.. make T_T

Maybe I was just born with an unsteady hand? =[ Art does have some physical limitations (depending on what you want to create).... you can't be a neurosurgeon with shaky hands either. :V

No it takes a while to adjust your hand eye coordination. The ability to draw is less hereditary than most would think actually.
I rarely use guidelines personaly, unless im drawing something complex from scratch, or I need to make sure I make whatever im drawing is the right size compared to the rest of the piece.
The good thing is that theres rarely a 'right' way to do things in art, so if you can get away without using guidelines, you dont need them.

If I didn't have the art teacher I had Freshman year, I'd be inclined to disagree. However he totally proved everyone wrong.

He still has his highschool drawings... they look all old and stuffs and are dated....
And so help me unicorn, they are HORRIBLE

But he's an amazing artist... just took him 50~ years (his joke not mine)

But yeah. :X
I'm tired. =[
So if anything I say doesn't make sense. I blame it on that.

It's time you learned the truth zio.
We've been living this lie for too long now and I can no longer hide it.

I am actually a unicorn.

So as I said yesterday, I spent a portion of today drawing some stuff. So yeah, I thought I would just try to draw my avatar here first. I am fairly pleased with the result, but it's definitely not what I hoped I would make :p.

I have one version with the outlining and without, I'll post both of them.

This is probably just a quick doodle of roughly 10 minutes for you but it literally cost me an hour ;_;.
Second time or so using GIMP.

Most of all, I'm unhappy with the whiskers, but it was too much of a hassle to try and get good whiskers with a mouse.

If you're going to paint by mouse, especially fur/hair, I suggest you "cheat" and download brushes that give the effect.

They still take a fair amount of skill/knowledge to use properly, but unless you have a pressure sensitive tablet it's very very hard to get realistic effects using a mouse without spending a larger time or just being "that good".

I also don't see brushes as cheating. *shrugs* An artist uses whatever tools they can get their hands on. Whether it be Cheetos to crunch up and draw with, or a unique brush in an art program.

I can't tel if that's a paw underneath the cat, and if it is the other paw looks... strange (our right side, cat's left). The cat's left paw I think needs to be a bit darker and more defined, I can soooorrrta make it out.

Also that's like x10 better tan I could do and you used a mouse. XD

PS:
I finally bought a sketchbook... I've been drawing on lined paper on my bed on a book for weeks. T_T Feels nice to have blank sheets of paper with a solid backing to draw on.... drawing on an English book is stupid. <_< Especially when you accidentally draw a line over the binding and you get this weird dented line and bleh..

It actually isn't a paw. There's no paw in my avatar either (just below his body, but not his left paw). Those are just stripes on the cat's body. Hm, I never heard of these brushes, I'll probably go look for them! But yeah, don't worry, it's not a paw <_<!
Also, I agree with you, there's no cheating in art, other than stealing someone's work.

Thanks for the compliment :).

Ahh, nice a sketchbook. I'm really bad at drawing sketches, or with pencil for that matter. I sort of like drawing on lined paper, the lines always gave me a decent indication wether I was still going straight or if I was waaaay off.

There's no such thing as cheating as long as you get the desired effect. Unless you lie about the manner you did it in of course.
I don't even see tracing as cheating, because you can only go so far with it. Creating accurate proportions and reference lines by tracing works great if you're too lazy to do it by eye.
For example, if you were to take a photo, and put it in photoshop to make it look identical to a drawing, or a painting, I wouldn't care, unless you said it was a drawing or painting. Some people call photoshop or digital art cheating and I'm like >_>
You be surprised to learn I am a Narwhal.
That's like the unicorn of the sea :0
Perhaps there is hope for us after all

It's only cheating if you claim that you didnt trace at all and claim it 100% as your own xD

WOAH. Plot twist. Bren, Zio, I never would have guessed.

I like to have my font match my avatar if and when possible.

I also like changing my avatar to match other sites usually.

This is my actual avatar (keep in mind the other site only has a 150px width limitation and DOES NOT HAVE TOP POSTBIT) but I had to crop it for SWF:

My current font is e09922.

I hate not having a custom color. White font is ugly, and default colors are overused.

Actually I can vaguely see it on this school monitor.
I couldn't on my old home one...
Who else can see it?
