I think that he really isn't a character at all and is more a vehicle for allowing us to control the pokemon... the reason that he wasn't really given a name is because he's meant to be pretty generic. If they wanted him to be Red from GSC, they would have just named him Red.

I have no clue why he called him Pokemon Trainer and not Red.

I can think of only two reasons this would happen:

1) You start off in Pokemon games with the professor asking you what your name is. (so I'm thinking maybe Sakurai thought it would be unfair to name the PT.)

2) Other people have thought that maybe his alternate costumes will be different trainers, like maybe a female trainer. Calling them Red would be odd.

I don't know, though...

Actualy, it could becouse everything there is in the Dojo (in English) is just a direct translation from part of sakurai's web designers/minions and hasn't go through the NOA (Nintendo of America) localization team (wich edits/translates/modifies the game to better acostume the region.)

Althought that option would be nice too!

you got a point goin, his name could be blue or even yellow...but not a female cause what would they name her...pink...purple...lavender...i don't think so
. . . I can't help but think this post is a little sexist. I'm kind of hoping your kidding.

A girl's name doesn't have to be "girly". Afterall, isn't the girl's name in Fire Red and Leaf Green technically "Green", due to the game color?

Well, theres also Red's Poliwrath...
Really? Poliwrath is my favorite Pokémon, period. I think it'd be awesome if he'd appear as Red's Final Smash. Don't have a clue what he'd do though :p

Ahem, I beg to differ. Red was not limited to just the simple Manga, he also starred in Pokemon Red, and Fire Red. If you will look below:

This is Red

This is PT

HOW ARE THEY NOT THE SAME!?
Yes, they look the same, but that's just because Red's design is based off of the design of the generic player-character from RBY (and, I guess, Fire Red and Leaf Green). But if this character was meant to be the Red from the Manga, then I think his name would just be Red. Also, they probably would have given him the smallest shred of personality, which I don't think they did based on the screenshots.

Yes, but I think that it's a little different when they give you more than one name to choose from, as opposed to one default name (for example, in FFX when Tidus was the one default name, but you could choose another one if you wanted) . I mean, if you want to use that argument, this guy might as well be Ash.

Right here with you... in your heart.
How about this: He's Red, due to overwhelming visual evidence, but only the Red from the games. Remember, Sakurai said he wouldn't be using any manga or anime characters, and I'm assuming that even includes manga and anime characters who're based off of video game characters.
Also, I suppose no one will call him Red, since his character name is Pokemon Trainer. But you'll all know the truth.

Everybody wins.

I'm calling him red anyway.

"I USE POKEMON TRAINER!"

That sounds stupid.

Even so, I fail to see the point. Naming a person after a color at all seems pretty odd to me. It would make a lot of sense for one of the PT's alt costumes be a female trainer.

Fair enough. My point still stands though.

So. . . he's not known as "Red" in japan? He literally never had a name over there?

Or maybe they didn't call him Red because they plan to have trainers other than Red act as alternate costumes? That might be wishful thinking on my part but I still think it makes a lot of sense.

Yep, he was named Satoshi, after the creator.

PS: I Luv Halloween rules.
Ah. You learn something new everyday.

The fact that you know of I Luv Halloween rules. I literally don't know anyone else who's heard of it.

Brawlpro: I'm sure that's true. But regardless of names, I think a female trainer as an alt costume is a good idea. And I'll probably continue to call him Red on these boards just because that's easier and everyone pretty much knows who I'm talking about (I don't like "PT" too much because it's too much like "AT" and "PC").

My take:

Color sawps will be diferent trainers, like blue yellow and pink can be the female trainer, and red black and green? can be the male trainer...

Just to inform you guys, that very likely IS Red. You see, in G/S/C in Japan he wasn't named Red. All it said when you encountered him was "Boy Trainer wants to fight" (something along those lines). Anyways, this is likely the result of them simply doing a copy/translate/paste of what Sakurai wrote on the Japanese site. Whether or not this will change when the game comes out here, I do not know, but that trainer is most certainly pre-G/S/C Red.

guyz c'mon y link underestimated its a pkmn game so *** ******* or what ever won't be his name(i know you were sayin u just don't care)...but you were kidding, we'll just find out, hang in there, just 4 more months (i think).
well if u think about it, since its a pkmn game, his name could be anything. i mean u could choose w/e u want in the beginning of EVERY pokemon game. n yea i was going to say i was kidding, but u knew that so yea...

oh about the pic of the Cloud, it has nothing to do whatsoever about Red/Tirkaro or anything else. i thought it was funny when my friend sent it to me and i wanted to share (and maybe piss off some crazed FF fans haha; note that i am a FF fan) so yea...i guess all i can say right now is "be back at 10" gotz to go somewhere...:chuckle:

It seem now we will be able to tell the age of our online foes simply by what character they're using.
