Melee set no standard, as far as im concerned. i liked ssb64 more then melee... and im pretty sure ssb64 set the standard... which brawl is more like then melee.
I really hope this wasn't serious, as I don't even know where to begin. SSB64 did set the standard, and Melee expanded upon it. Nothing is wrong with liking SSB64 more than Melee either; I've picked up SSB64 again and I think it's a great game (much better than Brawl), just not as good as Melee to me. Brawl being more like SSB64 though? Brawl has next to no combos, whereas every character in the cast in SSB64 can pretty much zero to death each other. SSB64 and Melee also had something called hit stun that just couldn't find its way into Brawl. SSB64 and Melee also required tech skill for doing things like lag-canceling which is now absent in Brawl. SSB64 and Melee are actually quite balanced relatively to Brawl, which has one character dominating the scene. I could go on and on, but this is a ridiculous argument on your part. Oh, and Brawl has tripping.
again, you do not need a fast paced game with combos left right and center to be good/fun dont even deny it. but if you think you do, you must have originally played mortal kombat or street fighter...(ssb64 was my 1st fighting game before anyone says anything.). i give you my word brawl will outlast melee, even if its not in the "pros" playing it, i wonder how many casual smashers/young children stopped playing melee before brawl was even conceived? i was one of them... melee might require more skill to handle the physics, perform combo's, and
If SSB64 was your first game, you would think that combos are crucial for fighting games, as they are even more prevalent than they are in Melee. Brawl will be played for a long time, but we've already seen the competitive scene dwindling and going back to a game that's over 7 years old while Brawl hasn't even reached its one year anniversary yet... And what casuals do is irrelevant, we're talking about this game on a competitive level.
no its not like that, its like people in this thread, and all over north america and wherever else for that matter, that are trying to destroy a game that is 100% better(melee has no online, id rather a laggy one then none, thanks) by saying stop playing brawl all together and just play melee, a game that is pretty much a mortal kombat/street fighter physics with smash bros rules.... how this is right, and fair to those that like brawl, i fail to see.
This is just ridiculous all over the place. The game is 100% better? I admit Brawl is a good game (although begrudgingly), but it's just not a good competitive game. And who cares if it has online, it doesn't make it a better game. Let's take a timeless classic like Zelda: OoT. Then let's pretend they created a sequel where all Link could do in the game was shove a stick up his ***, but then they added online, although it lags as well. By your logic, this game is vastly superior, so you should play this game and sit through online lag while you try to get Link to shove a stick up his ***. Tell me how that works out. And what is wrong with the Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter comparisons? While I don't think MK is a great series, comparing Melee to Street Fighter gives it even more merit as SF is one of the best (if not best) fighting game series of our time (let's not get into this argument though). So I'll take that as a compliment to Melee, and just another knock toward Brawl. And we're not knocking those who like Brawl as I've said before; it's fine to like the game but you're more than likely just a casual player then. Competitively, the game just doesn't compare.
to both whom i quoted: brawl is just outright better then melee; more characters makes for a bigger experience, the technology of the game is better like(i hated the hitstun duration of melee... made it look too unrealistic.. but outside of that graphics and such are irrelevent to me), and even reviewers will tell you brawl>melee.
Not like reviewers matter at all in a game like this since they're looking at a very shallow level and don't continue to follow the progress of the game, but there's some rankings for you anyways that take into account lots of reviews. Enjoy.
