The idea of fishing while it's raining is that fish are basically afraid of light. They stay away so they're harder to see to predators. Also the reason people go night fishing. I think there are other reasons but that's the one I was taught.

Or a better example- using refineries to turn age-old oil into combustible fuel.

You can purify salt water into drinking water pretty easily..... it's one of those basic survival techniques when you're stranded.

Well, it's not impossible. It would just be awkward since the wing would follow her head movements.
