That's one of the reasons he's such a good shape for Smash Bros, he's very compact and at the same time, not awkward to hit because of his almost equal width versus height. It makes him a good target for attacks while not a big one, he's a small Bowser. It'd be fun to wail on him because of that, but like how Sonic rolling around in his ball form is a great dodger, Pac-Man can be easily be played in a way to avoid attacks.
Totally agree! .. I suppose that Pac will be very balanced and fun to use.. I said, I trust in Sakurai for a good moveset, and with so much references, he can't do Pacster in a wrong way... I can't wait to see this becoming reality. =)

well, done!... apparently, my memory betrayed me. XD.. Pac is really smaller than Mario, a not a little bit as I remembered.. (still not too much) well, at least nowadays...

here, you can see the comparision from Mario Kart Arcade GP DX;

and now, here's Pacster together with his future fellows of cast =P (Ridley included, I hope);

but, size doesn't mean too much about his gameplay.. just a thing about hurt boxes and hit boxes, I guess.. if we take MKAGPDX again:
---we can see that he's a standard character, very much equal to Mario; so... I expect him this way on Smash4; =)

and LexaKiness (from DeviantArt) for convert the model to XNALara, for me being able to use and pose it. =)
Whoa! Once again you astound me, CyberWolf! This looks incredible. And yeah, that's about what I figured Pac to be like. Though, to be honest, I imagined him a little big taller or bigger, but you're right: in comparison from past games and such, he is a bit smaller. Huh. Still awesome all the same!

hehe, Thanks friend! ... Well, I guess that everybody expected Pac a little bit taller than that, ... but after all, he's corporal structure is appropriate for this size, I guess. But he's a standard character, nothing to worry for him being a character like Olimar or Pikachu (I mean, about weight of gameplay... since, he's taller than both Olimar and Pikachu anyway) ... well, he isn't a featherweight in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.. this is already something. XD

Thank you for that comparison @ CyberWolfBia CyberWolfBia , it looks great! The one with all the characters there doesn't make Pac-Man look out of place at all - instead, I feel like he fits in pretty well.

Hey I just saw the Mario Kart w/ Pac-Man today. This makes me even more confident then I already was that Pac-Man is getting in. In fact now that I've seen him in Mario Kart, I'd be very surprised if he wasn't a playable character.

As much as I wish I could say this was concrete proof, I remember the first Mario Kart Arcade GP was out before Brawl was, because I was using that as an argument as to why Pac-Man would be in Brawl. Sadly, it didn't happen.

heh, well, the difference from Brawl in comparision to today, it's that practically everything is in favor of Pac! For starters the fact of NAMCO Bandai being co-developing Smash4; ... and... well, it's already a big motive for him being in; XD... I just can't believe that NAMCO wouldn't at least cite Pac-Man during the developing for Sakurai;... it will be the biggest event in the gaming industry (the encounter of four mascots and companies), no lie.. they know that.

Oh believe me, if Namco is working on this game, they most definitely have pushed the idea of Pac-Man being in there. As hard as they're pushing the relaunch, I can't imagine they'd assist in a character-driven fighting game and not even mention their beloved character be put in as well.

What if he does get in, but only as an assist trophy?
Ummm... why would they go through the legal troubles to acquire permission to include a third-party character only to turn him into an Assist Trophy?

The main difference between Brawl's development and SSB4's development in the context of Pac-Man, Namco-Bandai's involvement notwithstanding, is that this time, Sakurai has been more active in seeking out third-party characters, whereas last time, he was much more reticent and only sought after Sonic because sheer fan demand compelled him to. Every third-party character has more of a chance this time because of this, though it could be argued that Sakurai's comment on Mega Man means that he's become more selective with what he'll include (which I personally do not necessarily believe at the moment).

What if he does get in, but only as an assist trophy?
Why would Nintendo bother to acquire the rights to use the Pac-Man IP and only use it for an Assist Trophy? That'd be like negotiating for the use of Banjo-Kazooie and only having a stage based on the series. It'd be a waste of everyone's time and money.

I am only presenting a hypothetical situation that has a 99.999% chance of not happening. The question's goal was to get an answer on how people would respond to it.

Ah. Very well. I apologize that I did not understand your intended message at first.

Personally, I'd be very disappointed. I don't play with items on 99% of the time, so I'd never see the character in action. Additionally, I'd lose all hope for him ever becoming playable, since this will likely be the only Smash game developed by Namco, and if he's relegated to only an AT under their involvement, I'd find it hard to believe he'd be on the negotiating table for playable status in future titles not developed by them. I'd actually feel better about his SSB5/6 chances if he didn't appear in this game at all. Complete absence would suggest that Namco/Sakurai did not consider him to be playable this time, for any number of reasons. A role as an AT would suggest that they think he's definitely unsuited for a playable role, which would be a lot more disheartening. So in short, I've always been against him being an AT. It's a "deal" I'm not willing to settle for. I'd rather him be playable, or not show up at all.

Man, I'd be pretty furious at that point, I'll admit. He deserves way better than that.

Hey guys... guess what? The Ghostly Adventures game was finally announced for Japan, under the name "Pac-World" (パック ワールド); 19th June for the 3DS and 25th June for the Wii U and the others consoles; ... it's a date to put the eye, huh? at least, the 3DS version which is exclusive for Nintendo;

here's the 3DS oriental box-art

-- It's after E3 (which is happening 10~12 June); but still a good sign,.. I guess... a Pac-Man game being released so close of the E3 presentation that would feature Smash4, would help a lot both games marketing.

I doubt they'll try to heavily market the game around that time simply because I expect it to sell about 5 copies in Japan regardless of how much it's pushed, but I'm sure that if Pac-Man gets revealed, they'll link the game's website (does it have one?) on his profile page as is customary at this point.

Not a bad cover for the game, but I still like the US cover better. Dunno why, just those big eyes really sell it for me.

I honestly think Pac-Man's going to be revealed at E3 this year. They revealed Mega Man last year, and I know the game won't be out before E3, so they'll use that as one last hype boost for the game before it gets released, potentially showing off a trailer of all four company's mascots battling it out. It's gonna be epic!

I actually like Pac-Man's model there. Huh.
Haha, I had the same exact reaction. For some reason he doesn't look bad there. I still hope for a nod towards his historic and iconic appearances like they did with Mega Man but I guess I could also live with this new model he has.

I also thought Ghostly Adventures was out in Japan already, huh. But yeah, if in Smash, Pac-Man's going to be announced at E3. If that were to happen, it would definitely give a boost to those game sales though.

I've gotten used to the Ghostly Adventures look, I prefer the older look, but I don't mind it. The only thing that bothers me is his teeth, he looks very weird with them.

Well, they'll sell 5 copies if they doesn't do a heavily marketing. XD.... Well, NAMCO always make a huge advertisement for Pac-Man, he's their Mario.. naturally... =P... and I dunno, Ghostly Adventures seems to fit better to Japanese public.. with all those colors; I saw a Japanese trailer of the show, and it sounded more sympathetic than the US or BR versions. =P

and of course Ghostly Adventures has a site, but I'm not sure about Nintendo putting the link on Smash Bros. site; even with a portable exclusive version for Nintendo, is still a multiplatform game... they would want to promote a game that is on the other platforms as well?.... maybe, a link for the Virtual Console's Pac-Man Collection would be better... but the launch of Ghostly Adventures a date to promote the character himself.

yeah, E3 is THE date. But we can still expect some days after E3 (the JPN release of G.A.) and, we can still expect Pac to be the last revealed.. if Smash4 be released in December; November is a good month, since is the the anniversary of the Original Pac-Man on NES. =)

I actually like Pac-Man's model there. Huh.
Huh, nice to see you changing your mind. XD.. but you refer in the JPN Box-Art of G.A. or in my size comparision?

nah, again, the teeth are for some facial expressions... he's not always showing,.. but I don't see a problem with that. =P

I don't mind the teeth at all. It gives him the ability to grin or grimace without just having a curved line for a mouth. In other words, creepy or not, it allows him far more facial expressions. They're a convenience for emotions, many of which wouldn't have been possible on older Pac-Man models without it just looking like a standard happy or sad face.

VS.
It's clear which one is better.

from where I can see... it's clear just which one you prefer... better? I can't say, I'm no designer (I dunno if you're, though)... but, I don't mind, really... actually, this particular pic you posted from Ghostly Adventures, is pretty funny, IMO. XD

PS: on the other hand, I find pretty weird when, in some expressions in Pac-Man Party, Pac's eyebrows flee of their triangular shape, as some images in that compilation above. :T... just personal tastes anyway.

For me it's mostly the teeth that make the GA design unsightly. I know it's necessary for the express purpose of the cartoon but I wouldn't like that part of the design to make it into Smash. It wouldn't be ruinous but yeah, unsightly...

However, the core design is mostly the same aside from that.

Bah, think about it... Pacster making shocking expressions, when he get hit or fly away.. just like Dedede's examples or, every other character in Smash; the G.A. design, with some theet and all, wouldn't be that bad.. actually, I think is pretty perfect for the ocassion... XD XD

oh, well... Dedede has theet now too, huh?.. like his Anime incarnation. =D

It could work out, I trust Sakurai's judgement with the design. I'm sure he wouldn't do anything that looked ugly. It's not like teeth need to be apparent in the design at all times anyway, and he would have chomping moves. It's no big worry.

I'd have to rethink everything I believe in the world if Pac-Man ends up in the game with a full set of chompers while DK is relegated to his new toothless duck mouth.

Yes, I know the teeth appear in some animations. That's what makes it weirder.

Well, actually no, teeth aren't necessary for expressions. The only time where it would be appropriate if it was for a scowl or grin, but at the same time there are alternatives. Every other case you can simply omit it and it wouldn't cause problems. Hence why in the case of Pac-Man, it's sort of pointless. Now maybe if he was some sort of animal like a shark or bear (hell even human) it would be fitting, but all it does is create an uncanny valley sort of feel.

I actually didn't mean that, more that explicitly in the cartoon the teeth give range to Pac-Man's character, whereas a game wouldn't require that. Of course teeth aren't required, but the style they were going for means they had to use them.

This thread makes me want to change my dream roster now.
I would think a (useable) Pac-Man stage would look more like this:

This of course represents more of a traditional Pac-Man feel, which is probably what we'd see. I just threw this together, so it's far from a 'polished' look, but I hope you get the idea.
I'd love to see this. LOVE to. And as a hazard, the ghosts could occasionally pass by, causing the fight to move onto the platform up there. Would the cherry regain health? Or would it just be like the items in Brawl's 75m?

That necro'd post reminds me of an old mock-up I did for my own stage idea.

This one stays a little closer to the game. I like it. Only thing is that the line of dots pointing vertically. It looks out of place. Also the lower too platforms look a bit cramped, which I personally wouldn't like too much. Admittedly, it would add some possibilities that I don't think we've seen in a stage before. Maybe if the walls were lowered so the center of the walls were lined up with the main platform and the lower two platforms were shorter and on top instead.

I was thinking that the arcade maze stage could be a scrolling stage much like Rainbow Cruise where the stage scrolls in all four directions. The stage itself could be exactly like the arcade maze... much like 75m and Mario Bros... and we fight all over the stage...
