Numbing your taste buds?

Food, it's good. I like it. Sometimes. You see, I'm very, VERY picky. Ridiculously picky. I've tried the foods, but I just don't like them. It's really bugging me lately, so I thought I'd ask on the forums. Is there a commonly known way to temporarily numb or kill your taste buds? That way I wouldn't care to eat the disgusting foods that I know are good for me, and people wouldn't complain when I didn't eat very much.

I'm not looking for a way to make things taste differently, I want there to be absolutely NO taste whatsoever.

This isn't to lose weight or anything, (I'm seventeen and weigh 110 lbs!) I just wanna be able to eat the darn food. I know I can take a vitamin to get all the good vitamins and such, but the point is the FOOD. I want to eat the FOOD, not a pill with all the stuff crammed into it.

Just wondering if anyone knew any way to do that!! (I've heard cetacaine can numb your taste buds, but I think it's meant for pain...

I have never eaten anything I have'nt enjoyed somewhat.I dont know how people can be picky.I dont know of anything that can nullify the taste.

I have a quote that I dont think I came up with but I coined it anyways, and I always apply it to anything I eat.

"Everything is delicious in its own unique way"

I'm also very picky...back in elementary school I got extremely sick for about a month and a half, and after I healed my tongue was also affected for some reason. A lot of the foods I liked now tasted like crap and I couldn't stand to eat them. Most things have a bitter taste now :urg:, but there are still plenty of foods that I can eat. What I sometimes do is make up my own dish and replace things I don't like with things I do. There are probably a lot of things you like, you just haven't found them all yet or they are very uncommon foods.

Supposedly, your taste buds change every 6 years, or something. I don't know. It could be entirely false-- I'm just a sucker for 'omg really?' facts like that.

Anyway, yeah, I don't think there's any simple method for numbing your taste buds without actually numbing your entire mouth, thus making it too much effort to actually eat.

Well over time your taste buds die. Thats why people are able to eat things they disliked earlier in life. And why old people can eat REALLY nasty things.

Unless you can't eat anything then I wouldn't worry about numbing yourself, they'll die eventually.

How very odd. Oo;

Dunno about numbing them but I think you can 'overload' your tastebuds temporarily with an extreme taste, like sweet, salty or sour. But I doubt you find any practical solution here, to be honest. My best suggestion is try having the foods prepared in a different way, you might find you really like the food when its made differently.

Even if your taste buds do regenerate overtime, I wouldn't risk constantly burning them, and treating them to nasty foods.

Learn to cook. Most people I've met think that they don't like certain foods because whoever served them to them either was a bad cook, or just didn't cook the foods in a way that they prefer. If you think you don't like broccoli, for example, it could be because your parents cook it until it goes from green to brown or gray. And then to mask the taste of overcooking, they come up with their own fix such as drowning it in canned cream of mushroom soup. Try cooking it in a different way, with different spices, and don't overcook most vegetables.

if your eating food without taste what the hell is the point. at that point, it is a chewable vitamin. actually, its probably worse, because at least vitamins taste kind of good, lol.

take vitamins and eat all the food you want, and enjoy it. weirdo, haha

Same thing happened to me. Not sure if it was because I got sick. But I stayed over at a friend's house and his parents smoke n stuff. I hate smoke.. I also fell asleep with the fan on me so I got a fever too. After it was all done I couldn't stand the taste of cheese, egg, some sodas tasted odd.. Was really sad.

Haha yeah I love to eat. Stuff tastes so good :) But I'm often too lazy to go get food so I'm really skinny.

You could use a blow torch and.... to your tongue... Nah, thats horrible... Or go eat a Hotpocket. 50-50 chance, either the middle is still cold, or taking one bite will destroy your tongue.

I have a genetic trait that makes me a "nontaster." However, I'm still very picky. So I suppose I should try the nose thing. One problem I have is that meat in lasagna gets stuck in your teeth and tastes horrible to me. However, I love pasta that ISN'T lasagna to the point where it's my favorite food

Still, I've broadened my horizons. I used to only eat white pasta, but now I can eat any flavor, like the healthy stuff.

Icing your tongue temporarily numbs the taste buds. It's effective but it doesn't very long.

In the region of China where I come from, Sichuan, there is a spice known as "花椒", or "Sichuan Pepper", scientific name Zanthoxylum:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sichuan_Pepper

It's used in several forms: as whole peppercorns, ground into powder, or as an oil. What this spice does is to make your tongue go numb, and it's often used in conjunction with spicy chili peppers. Used right, it will overpower pretty much any other taste in the food. It's a slightly weird sensation but we regard is as being delicious.

I don't know if any of you guys will ever have the opportunity to try it, though.
