The only character in Smash that uses a Shovel in Smash is Villager. Although he's not a knight. (Pretty sure you can dress him up as one in Animal Crossing though but that's besides the point....) And only uses it for one move.

I am terribly sorry for asking, but I have not kept up with this for the last couple of days, but do you mean you have, like, some info you have not/cannot share right now, that may hint at Shovel Knight really coming to Smash? Or am I wrong? :s

I don't think he has insider info. He's just pretty convinced that he's likely now.

@DMurr
Shovel Knight is "SNES" style retro, which resonates with a lot of people who had the console growing up. His fanbase extends past the regular group of Smash fans, and into general gaming fans. A lot of people apparently think of him as a Nintendo inspired character which is why they thought he should be in Smash (plus the indie representation people). If you think of it like that it makes sense why he's popular.

My main issue with Shovel Knight is that he has one game, from an indie developer and is obscure if you consider a worldwide view. 3rd Party characters are a special guest in Smash, and having Shovel Knight in kind of ruins the special recognition that the honor is. Like I consider 3rd party Smash characters as the hall of fame of video gaming, and right now we have no idea if Shovel Knight is going to have any long term relevance like PacMan or Ryu. He's had a lot of crossovers, and DLC is coming for his game all the time + new amiibo so for an indie game he is one of the top contenders.

I've been against indies in Smash since day one (I wrote that post about Indies not being likely in Smash at the start of the ballot if you remember) and my feelings haven't changed.

I'll accept Shovel Knight if he's in it, and I'm sure he will be fun to play as. In the end its probably the interesting/ unique aspect of Shovel Knight that got him in. How many other character's in the roster use a Shovel as a weapon? Are Knights? Are light blue? That's probably why he got in (besides the large amount of suggestions).

@Aeris and I talked about how if SK is in, the two newcomers are 3rd party. It's almost a theme. Maybe they are using Dlc for 3rd parties because it's easier to negotiate the rights/ distribute the profits. After all they did stress you could vote for whoever you wanted to.

I get why people are both upset or happy that he got in (again, if the rumor is true). At the end of the day, it's not the end of the world.
I would say "NES" style retro actually. Even though his game really breaks the NES limitations in just about every way, and doesn't even try to hide that. But his game has this "hey remember the NES?" appeal, so it's hard to associate him with SNES.

And I 100% agree with the post. I don't personally want Shovel Knight and too agree that third parties is a "Hall of Fame" kind of thing. It's a bit weird he's getting in, but I guess it's for the Indie representation.

I find it funny that Shovel Knight himself in his game is a lot more detailed then the terrain or enemies.

The information is (mostly? Ill have to check my notes) all public, @Neo Zero and I just know additional details on how it became public/ information about the exact nature of the rumor which might give it additional credibility. It's not confirmed at this point and additional information from Sakurai or Tamaki could push the credibility in either direction.

Right now, since the Shovel Knight amiibo says it will also work with Nintendo products, I'm more incline to believe it.

It's almost like they want their mascot to stand out
Mega Man doesn't stand out in his game neither does Mario. It's good to keep everything of one equal artistic value and not have it varied or else it looks a bit tacky.

Different times, if you make your character stand out in the 80's, it will help. However, nowadays a tons of video game icons, no one wants their mascot to be ignored in favour of these other icons

Ahh I was debating if it was NES or SNES. I figured it was too detailed for NES so I said SNES. Thanks!

To be honest, while I don't think Shovel Knight is a bad looking game, some of the visuals has always kinda bugged me. (The NPC villager sprites kinda bugs me. Also not a fan of one-pixel eyes that modern retro games goes for.)

And as far as level visual goes. I am not really a fan of some levels I've seen, the quality on the tiles looks kinda... ugly and bland. On the other hand, some levels looks really good.

SK's sprite work based on everything I've seen so far feels like a mixed bag.

Different times, if you make your character stand out in the 80's, it will help. However, nowadays a tons of video game icons, no one wants their mascot to be ignored in favour of these other icons
...I don't think you're understanding what he's getting at.

Shovel Knight Moveset 2.0:

Stats:
Size: Around the same height and size of Mega Man.

Weight: Slightly heavier than R.O.B.

Speed: Slightly faster than Robin.

Visual:

Entrance: Shovel Knight flip jumps and lands with his shovel in the air, with random entrance text like "Steel thy Shovel" or "For Shovelry!"

Jump: Normal Shovel Knight jump.

Double Jump: Golden Shovel Knight flip.

Crouch: Barely a crouch like in the game, you can use it to do a little dance.

Roll/Side Step/Air Dodge: Shovel Knight uses the Phase Locket to make himself invulnerable.

Up Taunt: Shovel knight holds shovel in the air and shakes it with gumption.

Side Taunt: Shovel Knight holds his shovel with bold hands and is ready for battle.

Down Taunt: Shovel Knight takes out a red gem and holds it in the air.

Fanfare: Shovel Knight - Main Theme (0:31-0:38)

Victory 1: Shovel Knight rummages through a blue chest and finds a huge pink gem, which he holds over his head.

Victory 2: Shovel Knight is sleeping with his head resting on a log by a campfire.

Victory 3: Shovel Knight does his classic crouch dance. (Totally motionless with a slight bend with his knees).

Normal Attacks:

Jab: Shovel Knight does his classic shovel swing. Using the move consecutive times allows it to combo into itself, but the knockback will make it difficult to combo into.

Forward Tilt: Shovel Knight uses the Fire Rod to shoot a medium sized ball of fire. Deals fair damage and knockback.

Up Tilt: Shovel Knight raises his Shovel to the Sky to deal damage.

Down Tilt: Shovel Knight throws an Alchemy Coin, deals minimal damage but can be spammed.

Dash Attack: Shovel Knight punches forward with Dust Knuckles.

Smash Attacks:

Forward Smash: Shovel Knight holds his Shovel to the side while charging up, dealing a devastating swing.

Up Smash: Shovel Knight throws an Anchor overhead, the longer you charge it the farther it goes.

Down Smash: Shovel Knight takes out the War Horn, he charges it and then he blows creating a shock wave around him. The longer you charge it, the bigger the shockwave it. It deals minimal knockback, but it has a very powerful Windbox.

Air Attacks:

Neutral Air: Shovel Knight does exactly the same thing as his Jab, only in mid-air. Which is very strong as you can spam the move in mid air multiple times to create a wall.

Forward/Back Air: In both moves Shovel Knight uses his Propeller Dagger. This is his main form of recovery, so it is the same move no matter which direction you use it.

Up Air: Shovel Knight swings his head and deals damage with his Helmet Horns.

Down Air: Oh baby. His Down Air is his signature Shovel Bounce. How it works is that it doesn't change your momentum or movement at all, instead it switches you to "Bounce Mode" in which if you hit anything below you, you will bounce again and again and again. However you cannot get out of this mode until you use your Neutral Air or when hitting the ground.

Grab Attacks:
Grab: Shovel Knight uses his Dust Knuckles to grab the opponent.

Pummel: Shovel Knight punches the opponent.

Forward Throw: Shovel Knight does a huge punch to send him opponent forward.

Back Throw: Shovel Knight tosses the opponent backwards.

Up Throw: Shovel Knight uppercuts the opponent.

Down Throw: Shovel Knight digs into his opponent. This leaves them in a dug state like Donkey Kong's Headbutt.

Special Moves:

Neutral Special: Dig

Shovel Knight digs into the ground, and flings a ton of jewels forward. These damage the opponent. The bigger the jewel, the bigger the damage.

Side Special: Mobile Gear
Summons a Mobile Gear that players can stand on. Once a player stand on it, it will travels towards the direction the player is facing when it starts moving. The Mobile Gear works as a platform, so you can use Smash Attacks while on it. The gear itself will jump if it reaches an edge, but will be destroyed if it hits a wall. By itself it can damage enemies and deal a fair amount of knockback.

Up Special: Fishing Rod
The Fishing Rod when used in the air acts like a Tether recovery. However when used on the ground, the anchor damages enemies. If used by a ledge, the anchor meteor smashes opponents as it falls down to the ground. Perfect against people coming back from the ledge below. However if you wait until the anchor is completely off screen you can actually fish! Wait until the exclamation point and hit the B button again to reel it back in. You will be given a random item if Items are on. If Items are not on, you will get a useless boot or tire.

Down Special: Troupple Chalice
Shovel Knight gulps down a Chalice for 3 seconds. If Shovel Knight drinks all of the chalice he recovers 15%. He can do this twice per life. If he is interrupted while drinking the ichor, he will drop the chalice to the ground and it will break.

Final Smash:

Troupple King Waltz:

Shovel Knight summons the Troupple King to put on a show. As the music plays, troupples start flies around the stage hitting and damaging enemies. Shovel Knight can't do anything, as he is just dancing to the music. As a bonus, it refills his Chalices.

So, according to Neogaf, Nintendo has been promoting the recent Smash characters a lot suddenly (Ryu and friends & Knuckles) on Twitter and FaceBook and whatnot.

And there is this maintanence for Smash on Monday, right?

I'll keep this picture ready.

Also, this E3's Nintendo World Championship confirmed to air on Disney XD in September.

Pretty neat. Totally not to advertise Mario Maker.

Okay Smashers I need some help.

I'm really struggling with characters who have (for lack of a better word) 'rush moves'.

By this I mean Falcon and 'dorf's Falcon Kick, Wario's Bike, Pit's Upperdash Arm etc.

Is there a good way to counter these or should I just be focusing on spot dodge/ roll?

I've finally started playing online lol. I need to work on my aerials landing.
For all those but the bike, you can simply just shield and punish them.

For the bike, you can hit Wario out of it without much issue, especially if you're preemptively prepared for it.

Jimmy please :079:
Oh wow, that like-to-dislike ratio, can't say it doesn't merit such a response though.

Here's another epic Super Mario Maker commercial.

I think we'll honestly just get a Shovel Knight Mii outfit, which I'm fine with.
Tamaki's source specified that he'd be a full character and NOT a costume.

If this rumor is true, we're not getting a Mii Costume.

Burb, you know as well as I do, the cries of ''Mii costume, assist trophy, etc"

Those happen every time someone is in the denial stage of a potentially strong leak and don't want that character.

I think I would still buy a Mii costume of Shovel Knight. Before all of this, I would have said that was more likely.

I mean I'm not 100 percent on it.

But with the people backing it?

It's stronger than most other leaks we've had for DLC, save Ryu and Roy, which I bought instantly.

Living in a peacefull place on nowhere islands.
Just playing catch up here before I have to leave again :p
You guys go through pages so fast these days :chuckle:
I just want two to four of these characters as DLC, is that so much to ask Nintendo??

Wolf
K. Rool
Dixie Kong
Bandana Dee
Isaac
Inklings
Toad (preferably Captain)

Where them first party newcomers at? Shout outs to Snake or Rayman tho
It's like a list that fell from the heavens.
Oh please let them do a Sonic line for the Olympics. More money to spend.
:snake: : Du-du-du-du-du-du-du I am sneaking and no one can find me, and I just farted and its starting to smell!" :troll:
A tear of nostalgia fell from my eyes.
Can someone explain to me what it is about Shovel Knight that resonates with a fair amount of Smash fans?

I don't mean this as an insult, as I'm legitimately curious. Of the character choices that I imagine come a lot from Reddit (Bayonetta, Shantae, Shovel Knight, Wonder Red, I'll throw in Geno too), he makes the least sense. Geno is in the Mario series, Shantae has history with being Nintendo exclusive at least briefly, Wonder Red and Wonderful 101 are 100% first party, Bayonetta 2 at least was published and funded by Nintendo. Shovel Knight, on the other hand, comes from a multiplatform, digital-only title. Why was he such a popular suggestion when the ballot came out? I honest to God do not understand why he was something people saw and thought "I want that in a Nintendo crossover."

I don't want the character to be a DLC fighter if we have a limited number because I think it's a poor choice for when we finally have the potential to maybe choose something, but if it's real I will buy the DLC and I'm sure enjoy it. I just don't understand why he was something people wanted in the first place.
You good sir are not alone and I would take anyone from your List above before shovel knight ^. I'll except him if he gets in but if we only have say two left. I don't know how I would feel about it.

That's the thing though.

Neo can and has been wrong. Remember the ,Ridley, Dixie, Chorus Men, Wolf thing? Neo had every reason to believe that too considering a man with the game told him that before it was released.

I'm just not sure anymore.

I don't doubt there'll be something soon. I'm still skeptical that it would be a character (Characters for those of us who dare to dream)

But there will be comething. Sakuria made Smash 3DS and WiiU as companions rather than separate games to save having to negotiate two contracts so I don't think they'd be on contract to do nothing and piddle around the office from E3 until the ballot closes.

Of course not! The Dutch equivalent of this stuff did the same, got quite a few right, does this means we will get Ridley because he was on that list with jabs at Bowser and Olimar? No! A magazine isn't a reliable source for this

That moment when you post something and it doesn't get noticed because the thread moves onto the next page.

It may have been a stupid overused pun, but it still sucks when it happens.

I'm not one to believe rumors, personally. I'm not sure what digital evidence we have, but so far I haven't come across it unless there is some.

Denial stage? It would theoretically affect me more if he is a character than me believing he is in the game. If I were to go the least stressful route, I'd believe he's in the game. I just personally don't believe he's going to be a character in Smash Bros. regardless if I think it's a good or bad idea.
