Also, just so you know, you'll see less arguments from me from here on out. I think some of you may know the reason, if you think hard enough.

But that's beside the point. What do you guys think of this dinosaur girl?

You know what drives me crazy at work?Screaming kids, they cry because they don't get sweets or something and the parents do nothing to shut them up, 'Customer is always right' Pretty sure other customers hate it too. Why bring your stupidly young kid to the shop anyway? Aren't you supposed to have a partner or something to look out for the kid?

I'm more bothered by parents that go overboard when scolding their child. I've seen occasions where it's borderline abuse. Honestly it upsets me, perhaps I'm just too soft.

Of course spoilt children become bratty. Parents should be kind but firm in my opinion.

The better tier lists generally use tournament results to back up placings of characters. Most of the times characters like Mii Swordfighter do not place well or even get used in tournament so they are placed low on tier lists.
I'm very aware of that, and there isn't even a Smash 4 tier list yet that does so. All the Smash 4 "tier lists" that get passed around are based on what random people think (which tend to be heavily influenced by what's being hyped, e.g. reddit tier lists that rank Luigi third despite Luigi's national results in top 32 being near nonexistent and all the theory that goes against him, and the constant tier lists that rank Yoshi top tier with nothing to back it up), or a single person's feelings.

Also with the Smashboards tier lists, the lower tiers tend to be based more on theory than actual results (e.g. why Ganondorf kept being ranked the worst in Brawl, even though Ganondorf players did better than the likes of Jigglypuff, Zelda, and a few other low tiers).

Weren't the majority of Swordfighter's buffs to customs?

Customs can help, but they don't propel a character multiple tiers.
You really need to see what has been actually changed in the patches.

In short: Swordfighter has had almost every move of his buffed through being made stronger, faster, less laggy, or some combination of such buffed attributes. He might not be a good character still (though with how underdeveloped he is, the jury is out on that one), but he's definitely no longer the completely awful character everyone used to perceive him as.

And here I was thinking Villager's customs were universally hated.
Each character has:

-5 Aerials
-4 Specials
-4 Throws
-3 Tilts
-3 Smashes
-1 Grab
-1 Pummel
-1 Jab
-1 Dash Attack
+a few other minor attacks (ledge, get up, etc.)

Some characters have a few different tricks. Some have different angles on certain tilts, some have Zairs, and some have multiple ways of performing one attack.

Specials are often a supplement. Villager is probably the only exceptional case, but it's not like he becomes two tiers worse without Brawl Mode setup. He's still a good character because the bulk of his moveset works really well. Similarly, a bad character is probably going to stay bad if his/her specials are good but the majority of their moveset is bad.

Well I apologize for insinuating that you didn't know. As far as I'm aware the only person with results for Mii Swordfighter is Trela. I just don't think many play him at all, not just in a tournament setting but in general. All I was saying is you can't expect a character who isn't played to get placed highly. I do agree with what you said about Yoshi though, he doesn't deserve to be placed as highly as he is on most of these lists. However Luigi is the opposite as lot's of people play him and most are aware of how good the character is.

I read the OP on the community patch notes thread for 1.1.0, and I haven't heard anything about previous versions buffing him.

Is there something I'm missing? The changes I can find listed on Swordfighter seem exclusive to his specials.

The only thing that separates specials from A attacks is they're the same in mid-air as the are on the ground. Mega Man has a lot of normal that have functionality traditionally associated with special attacks.

event hubs is trashThis the current tier list has of august
That's much better than Event Hubs, but I'd like to know what the criteria is for ranking the characters. Seeing Doc so low is very funny. My guess is that it's more about his weaknesses than about his strengths. In the right hands, he's easily low-mid tier (or B- in this graphic). Oh well, that's why I don't look at any tier list, it's more opinion than anything.

Sure ranking Swordfighter high tier is unreasonable when he doesn't have results, but as said, lower tiers are based nearly entirely on theory, and most people's theories of characters like Swordfighter, Charizard, Marth, Falco, etc., are based on very outdated information. As such, claiming Swordfighter is "bottom 5 def" is a highly nebulous, if not outright misinformative, statement.

Also regarding Luigi, sure lots of people play him, but his national results are really subpar for a supposed top tier character with all these players. The only Luigi that has really be seen far in top 32 is Larry's, which then is as a secondary in conjunction with Fox. And at Evo, there was only one Luigi (Mr. ConCon) in top 32 (and only at 25th). Then there's some really strong theory against him, and the fact he likely loses many matchups against lower characters. Him getting ranked as high as 3rd is definitely a product of being overhyped.

I read the OP on the community patch notes thread for 1.1.0, and I haven't heard anything about previous versions buffing him.

Is there something I'm missing? The changes I can find listed on Swordfighter seem exclusive to his specials.
1.0.4, 1.0.6, and 1.0.8 have rebalanced, and the latter two have had really significant buffs to Swordfighter's moveset. Additionally, changes to special moves tend to be more important, as special moves tend to be more important to a character's moveset than individual standard moves, outside of cases like where the special is really bad while the standard move is really good. Thus trying to brush off the 1.1.0 buffs because they were to specials is really silly.

So I wondered how people here chose which character (or characters) they wanted to main?

Personally I'm struggling a little when it comes to choosing who to play as.

I main who I like as characters and who are fun. Ike is very fun and he's the most popular Lord for multiple reasons. Same with all my other mains. Except Roy because I only main him because he actually plays like Old Marth

Well I'd assume all of us. Last time I checked, you're not forced to pick who you like.

Either because I like the character(Robin, Shulk) or because I have fun with them(Ganon, Little Mac)
Or both most of the time.

This was a community voted tier list on reddit, I believe. I usually give my opinions on some characters over there.

I am considering Ike actually. I find him a fun character to use because you are rewarded for outplaying your opponent thanks to how strong he is.

I have no idea what you are trying to say. Could you reword this please?

Generally it seems that people pick characters they like. Is it odd that I struggle to find a character that I look at and think "yeah this is who I want to play as". I like the majority of the cast equally, I don't fangirl over one series or character... otherwise my username might be "peachlover21" or something lmao.

Some of the characters I'm considering are: Zero Suit Samus, Charizard, Lucas, Pikachu, Ike and Meta Knight.

Fun fact: My best Ike kill was when a friend spammed Gordo Toss. I Fsmashed that mofo into next week. I still feel like Hector would be more fitting for Ike's moves though

I actually asked this question the other day and got some fantastic responses. Basically, a lot of people were like me and chose a character they had some sort of connection with or were a fan of their series. I find that if I care about the character, I'll be more dedicated to being good as said character.

Of course, others said they picked a character based on play style (or what felt more comfortable). I personally am a fan of Morton Koopa, but just don't feel comfortable playing the Bowser Jr. style. I may revisit it at some point, but right now that dream is dead.

Just keep in mind that the game should be fun. Playing only to win will always have bad results. Playing as a top ranked character that you don't care about can get boring quick. I find that, even when I lose as Dr. Mario, I'm still having fun. I always say that I'd rather lose with a character I have fun playing as than win with a character I don't care about.

I just went with a character I enjoy for playstyle + enjoying their character in general.

For me it's Pit and Dark Pit, with some Sonic and Roy on the side.

I main half the roster, but my true mains are 1)Bowser, 2) Rob, 3) Bowser Jr, 4) Roy, 5) Would probably be charziard or mewtwo, depends.

I vote Cards Against Humanity as one of the games.
I second this! CAH is great!

We can do Mario Kart night as well.

Wii U for 8 and for 3DS owners, we can do 7.

Also online Tetris matches. I'm a madman at Tetris

I did end up finding more concrete patch notes in the threads that indeed showed significant changes

Additionally, changes to special moves tend to be more important, as special moves tend to be more important to a character's moveset than individual standard moves, outside of cases like where the special is really bad while the standard move is really good.
Specials often help a character map out a strategy better on top of their standards, because the majority of damage building comes from standard attacks. This isn't always the case, as projectile-heavy characters tend to use a lot of specials as the bread and butter of their strategy, but standard attacks have specials completely outnumbered and give a character aerial presence.

Hence, a character with bad specials and really good standard attacks is a lot more likely to be really good than a character with poor standard attacks but really good specials. I mean, if Zelda gets a Din's Fire buff that makes it a fantastic projectile, she'll still be a terrible character because her standards are (mostly) terrible.

Find a character you enjoy playing. While I use a lot of characters, my likely top two are Rosalina and R.O.B., not because I "chose" them, but because I played them and they just felt so good for me.

I like to think that you don't choose your main, your main chooses you.

I think I should mention that I started playing the game just over a week ago. People seem to be throwing words like "playstyle" around without explaining what relevance this has. Either way I guess the only way is to experiment with different characters and hope that one magically clicks.

On a different note, would anyone be interested in playing smash?
