They better show off Metroid NX.I understand that, I was just using your statement as a transition point. In any case, E3 is not about actually making money or being successful. It's about hype. That's why "winning" E3 doesn't really matter... half the games we get hyped for end up terrible or in development hell. The easiest way to generate hype is with new hardware, so a company launching a new system already has a foot up on the competition.
I'm going to once again point out E3 2006. Nintendo knocked it out of the park with that one. It was the debut for the Wii, and while the majority of the talk concerned the motion controls and Wii Sports, Nintendo made sure to include a lot of traditional fair to appeal to the "hardcore" crowd.
Mario Galaxy debuted, and was viewed by many as a true successor to Mario 64 (the reception for Sunshine has softened over the year, but many gamers really disliked it at the time.) Twilight Princess was shown off and people loved both it and the use of motion controls in the game (I remember game journalists gushing over the fishing in particular.) Even Nintendo 'B' franchises were shown some love with Wario Ware Smooth Moves and Excite.
On the DS side of things, we got a new Star Fox (Command) and Zelda (Phantom Hour Glass) as well as a quirky rhythm game by the name of Elite Beat Agents.
To top it all off... we had the Smash Bros. Brawl reveal. That was an amazing moment. While Sony fans were scratching their head over "old" Snake in MGS4 Nintendo had the Snake everyone knew and love in their most popular fighting franchise.
The DS and the 3DS debut years were also really good.... if Nintendo can put together an event that's at least half as content filled as 2006 then I think they will walk away the show.
Though thinking on this Smash 4 getting updated for NX idea floating around, here's what I think they should add, assuming it's like Ultras Street Fighter to 4's Super Street Fighter.
- About 5 Extra Characters
- Ice Climbers
- Inkling
- Ballot choices that couldn't make it as DLC
- A surprise or two
- 3DS stages remade in HD as the hypothetical system will be a combination of portable and handheld.
- All DLC characters, including new custom moves for them (Imagine Ryu with Ken's Shoryuken or Sakura's anti-air hadoukens)
- An easier way to keep track of cusom moves
- A challenges list that's more balanced that 3DS's easy one and WiiU's Smash Balls hard one.
- A Hazard Switch. (Imagine Willy's Castle with the platforms but no Yellow Devil.)
