And keep in mind, I'm not against Wolf in the slightest. It's just the disturbingly high optimism that I'm opposed to.
Pretty much how I feel about it.

If Wolf doesn't return, I'll almost fear the ensuing uproar.

Hopefully, the ballot will help Sakurai and the team consider his inclusion.

Till then, it's playing the waiting game... By this point, any character reveal would do. :chuckle:

Gimmicks in Nintendo's history (consoles only):
NES - one of the first dedicated Gaming machines, saved state for games.
SNES - shoulder buttons!
N64 - a joystick, portable and console game interactions
Virtual Boy - vr
Gamecube - pressure sensitive buttons, later wireless controller can use a GBA as a controller
Wii - motion controller, tons of periphals --most notably balance board.
WII U - tablet like controller

Every console has a gimmick. Its what NintenDO in order to shake up their own games and the industry.
Other companies play it safe. :p

Nintendo always tries to innovate, but as I learned it in a class: innovation is always a risk. You can either revolutionize something, create something people didn't know they wanted... or it simply doesn't catch on and it's deemed a flop. Even something flopping isn't necessarily a bad thing if you think about it.

One thing is for certain, though: evolution doesn't happen if no one innovates or tries something new.

Still not as bad as when Wolf was higher rated then leaked characters.

I really hope we get either Wolf or K rool just so the fanbase doesn't explode in anger.
It's going to be terrible reading all the hate if one of those don't get in, but I'll think it will blow over. That reminds of the time when Mewtwo and Ridley weren't in the base game.....it also reminds me how dedicated people are to these characters and a few will go over the top in their reactions.

EVO 2016 trailer got released:

I find it interesting that it opens with a Melee clip, yet there is almost no Smash 4 clips whatsoever.

Seems like the Smash 4 community might have a bit to worry about next year....
I wouldn't worry, they did include a clip from the Smash 4 tournament, I just feel like it's Melee that brings more hype to people, so it's better to show clips from that. I also don't think they would just drop a game that fast anyway.

It's arguable that KKR could have it worse than Ridley if he doesn't make it.

"SAMURAI YOU GAVE US A DUMB COSTUME".

Yeah I think no matter what, "there will be salt" whenever and whoever they announce for Dlc. There's been way too much investment by some people in the ballot results.
And we don't even have proper results.

Can you imagine the outrage there would be if they were ever revealed?

I'm still uncertain about how successful Yokai Watch will be in America.

Sure, it may have caught on in Japan, but here, there's a definite stigma against perceived Poke-clones. And by that, I just mean the whole fact that no matter how different the gameplay is, as long as one of a large variety of monsters appears out of a small containment item, it'll be seen as a Pokemon clone. Digimon with the Digivices (despite them not actually coming out of them), Beyblade with the tops, Bakugan with the marbles, and so on. They failed to reach Pokemon-level success (particularly the latter two) likely based on that preconception: people may just see it as a fad and a retread.

Granted, while Yokai Watch isn't my cup of tea, I don't think of it this way, but I'm also not the average consumer.
Omg i remember Bakugan.I remember being in love with the anime and i remember from my late elementary/early middle school days bunch of kids sneaking into the bathrooms and playing with the toys and pretending to battle.I miss those days high school sucks

I didn't read all of them, but did read most of them.

Best articles were Smash Bros. Roster Cuts, Is Wolf a Shoo-In? and Evaluating Plausibility of Third Party Characters: SEGA. Articles that investigate choices made during development always pique my interest, and I like the SEGA article because I pretty much agree with everything said in it. The belief that a second SEGA rep must come from a series other than Sonic has always irked me. Same goes for the Wolf article; it's an unpopular belief that I happen to share, and does a good job of explaining just why it's a very real possibility that more people should be considering.

Worst is Approach to Handling Rumors & Leaks, because it came across as patronizing and a bit inconsiderate. There's no excusing the harassment people breaking rumors have been on the receiving end of, but at the same time, it's hard to see things from their perspective when you're fortunate enough to be "in the know". You didn't have to wait for RogersBase and the other goons to drop hints and tease everyone about the news they know. You had the info. That article would've been a lot less of a drag to read if it were written by someone who actually could relate to the side left in the dark.
Thanks for your feedback Burb! There are some people that complain whenever we do pure speculation/ opinion pieces but they tend to be the most popular. Going forward, I'm trying to balance the content with stuff that's heavily researched with speculation/ opinions as I don't think our speculation / opinions articles would be as good without the research articles.

As for the Approach to Handling Rumors and Leaks, my primary audience was the other 'people in the know' who were teasing people. I know I was fortunate enough "to be in the know" but it's actually difficult to keep your mouth shut when people are teasing/ spreading partial information. That's part of the reason I was less active during that time, as I was getting really annoyed with my position. I wanted to give out the information as I hate misinformation but I had to stick to my guns as I promised I would. I literally lost sleep over it. I was a bit afraid it would come off as condescending, but I really think it's a part of the community that we should really try to improve. We touch upon this issue in the podcast we recorded last night actually.

Well obviously they're gonna do /something/ new, it wouldn't be Nintendo that way.

I just personally hope it's not... too weird.

not like it matters i'll buy it anyway but eh

Please, I don't even want to be reminded if that were to happen. I'd just stay away from character discussion and enjoy what I have, which is all the content so far. No character has disappointed me yet, which also goes towards stages and mii costumes as well.

I do feel like people are also invested into this ballot a bit to much as well. It's mainly people putting in multiple votes for one character on multiple devices. I get you want a character in, but it comes off as you being that afraid they won't get in. It also leaves false votes because how many of the votes for characters were from different people and not the same person? This ballot has been a blessing for players who like the choice of requesting a character, and a curse for people within the speculation community. No matter what, it will be a terrible sight possibly worse than the reaction to the base roster.

As long a the gimmick isn't bad, it should be fine. People loved the wii's motion controls, so if they had a good original idea again like that( or pitched to them like the wii having motion controls), then the NX could be a huge success. If the rumors/speculation are true, it's gimmick would be that it is a handheld/home console hybrid, which if executed properly could be really effective and become a good and big selling point.

So basically this?
Man, it's a shame what happen to Samus in Other M because that design is the most badass in the series. The militant look with the short tomboy hair makes her look tough as hell and I wish Nintendo will use that design.

I unspoiled the image because how awesome it is.

But that Zero Suit design for Samus in Orher M is trash and hot garbage. Don't believe me

Clearly the one in Smash is inspired by the one in MOM, however there are various differences. The Smash one resinates with me better.

Ehh, I honestly don't care.

I rarely make levels anymore and the "wow" factor of the costumes weared off fast for me (nvm the fact that SMB is my least favorite style to play in).

So other than Ryu and Roy, not much of anyone else.
I think people give the motion controls way too much criticism, I have a suspecting feeling people hate moving their wrists.
Motion Controls are fun, but they gotta be used right too.

Skyward Sword? Not very fun. Wario Ware: Smooth Moves? Sign me the **** up.

I completely agree, but at the same time Nintendo has been innovating a bit too much if that makes sense, as evolution can also be the result of competition.

I think everyone would agree that Nintendo could be capable of so much more if they stopped marching to the beat of their own drum and started to add some more instruments into the mix like they did with the NES/SNES. A system that can both compete and innovate that has Nintendo's 1st Party IPs and key 3rd Party IPs (Ex. GTA, CoD) could change the industry landscape immensely.

The 3DS and Amiibos are pretty much the only things making true money for Nintendo right now, albeit they did market Splatoon very well.

I think people give the motion controls way too much criticism, I have a suspecting feeling people hate moving their wrists.

Am neutral on motion controls myself as when they work, they work well. The issue is what happens when the initial shock value wears off and you don't have much to back it up.

It's mainly due to unresponsiveness and lack of control tightness. One of the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" things.

Honestly in my personal opinion I don't want a handheld/console hybrid. I'd like to think the connectivity both NX console and handheld will have would be having the same architecture on both platforms, allowing for easier porting + whatever. This could be huge if they plan on making two versions of Smash again. No longer do you need to develop for two different platforms. Just port a game and make it have exclusive features for that platform.

amiibo is not going anywhere so those are staying; an NFC reader built in like the New 3DS would be better than an adapter.

It's all on how it's used. It's great for games like Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime (I genuinely prefer the Wii controls. Sue me)

But there were a loooooot of games that didn't need it leaving a bad taste in people's mouths. (DKC returns why)

They could invest in 3D models, granted that'd take a lot of time, but either way I'm fine with the costumes in SMB.

They actually made Arthur more realistic in the first one; instead of making him extremely short like in MvC3, they made him as tall as a normal human. Mario's more akin to Viewtiful Joe, who...isn't in Project X Zone. I think Mario's proportions would be deemed too unrealistic.
I think they could size Mario a bit up too then, Arthur still looks like he did in other games. I don't know, I just think that's a good choice (Mario).

Also the "realistic" rule is such trash.

There was a Sonic and Mega Man crossover that got rid of this rule, although it wasn't what I'd call top-notch.

Nintendo would never agree with altering Mario like that when he's as tied to them as he is. He is Nintendo. They're protective of him enough as is, so giving him more normally-human proportions wouldn't fly, I'd imagine.

EVO 2016 trailer got released:

I find it interesting that it opens with a Melee clip, yet there is almost no Smash 4 clips whatsoever.

Seems like the Smash 4 community might have a bit to worry about next year....
Nah man I wouldn't worry. The only way it wouldn't be in the lineup would be if they wanted other FGs to have the spotlight.

Hopefully it's as amazing as this year's EVO was.

Smash 4 only keeps growing.

I'd be downright baffled if they skipped out on it for the next EVO.

The only game that's likely not coming back to the main stage is P4U2.

So... we were talking about how the CSS on the 3DS version might change earlier. I decided to make a mock-up on what I think it might be.
Now, the reason why I decided to do it this way is merely for two reasons.

1.) The Stage Select Screen does the exact same thing.
2.) With the way DLC has been handled, it seems to be perceived as just bonus content by the development team.

How do we know its been treated as just extra content? Well, look at how its been thrown in there. It's just been put along side the stuff in the base game, not included with it. That's why they never really decided to change the order of the roster at all.

Why bother with something that's just going to be very small, when you can increase development time rapidly if you don't really worry about the UI as much? That's why I don't really think they'll shave off three pixels of the CSS for every character.

They'd pretty much have to restructure everything, and it'd be a hassle to do it. That's why I feel they're going with this type of CSS. To lighten the work load.

Now, I'm not saying this is what they're exactly going to do. We really don't know what the team has planned for the UI at all. Maybe they'll keep everything on one CSS? Who really knows at this point. At the end of the day, it's just really my thoughts and opinions on the matter.

Anyways, what do you guys think they'll do with the CSS once more characters are added? Just kind of curious on what your guys thoughts are on this :p.
