The only mario spin offs with solid rosters are the baseball and soccer ones when you think about.

These 2 in particular know how to separate major characters (captains) and minor (sidekicks) making a great variety.

For the sprixie, I don't hate her, she can be fun. It's just that there was much better choice :Diddy, Nabbit and Birdo just to name a few.

Seems like the Mario Makers (Ha) want to separate the Mario franchise from Donkey Kong Country as much as possible.

Yes, but they weren't part of the base game.

It was sort of a promotional easter egg hunt after the game came out. Yoshi recolors and Metal Mario.

Sprixie was the only weird choice, and most Mario spinoff games have at least one character like that. I'd actually say she's less of a weird pick than Spike in MP10. She's a character from the most recent main Mario title.

It would be a bad roster if it was missing a bunch of regulars and had tons of oddball choices. Y'know, like the last two Mario Karts.
