Punch-Out was a success but not a huge hit on the Wii, Splatoon has already outdone Punch-Out with one region alone. I may be kinda being overly confident but I think that cements it. Unless Smash Bros 5 is going to skip a generation.

Yeah but Little Mac was an AT in Brawl. His Smash 4 incarnation, along with the stage and his trophies are based on the Wii game. Yes, his legacy has helped his chance, but his Wii game was likely what got him in the roster due to priorities.

You forgot two games and spin-off that were all on arcade before the NES (and somewhat Game & Watch if you count Nintendo rebranding the G&W game "Boxing" into "Punch-Out!!" to make quicker cash)

Seems like an overreaction. In a game with multiple series going down at all times? I'm sure it's hard to juggle content and make every series feel pleased.

And the fact that he tried to so accurately make the buddy system work with Diddy and Dixie in Brawl proves he knows the series.

So I do expect him to revisit the series for a newcomer. It's just there's a lot of competition for attention when making a game of this nature.

I'm not implicating that Sakurai hates anything.
But I really don't think it's wise to call any DKC newcomer a "shoo-in".

All these known insiders and leakers and Smashers, coming together to teach us not to believe someone just because they've gotten some things right and claim to have a source. Just like with Tama and SK... When it all blows over, the Smash community will be that much more aware, and infinitely more cautious of "leaks"....

Yeah, there was a gap between Brawl and SSB4 for his game. And Brawl's roster was finalized in 2005. So yeah, he felt like a logical choice for an AT -> character upgrade.

Eh, I think people do understate how much big and highly requested characters he adds, but this is going too far in the opposite direction to act like he doesn't add unexpected and unusual characters in addition to the popular choices.

Mewtwo to be fair didn't have a lot happening for Brawl in the Pokemon franchise itself, and Sonic happened there as well to hold up not only him but a lot of characters and features. That's the real reason he got cut there.

Star Fox was dead for a majority of the planning process of 3DS/Wii U.

You have a slight point with K. Rool, but a lot of that could be chocked up to the fact of other priorities and things getting in the way.

All I'm saying is, calling characters "shoo-ins" is a not a good idea, and a lot of people have been horribly disappointing because their "shoo-in" character didn't get in.

Like, say Brawl had DLC. Say in 2010 they added Zip from FlingSmash. Ever heard of him or his game? Of course not. He was a complete dud from a critically panned Wii title. Splatoon, on the other hand, already has the kind of staying power to be considered an A-Lister for Nintendo. Praised and acclaimed critically and commercially, by both the casual and hardcore crowds, and in both the East and the West.

Splatoon is not FlingSmash. "Too new" is not an issue. They already have the credentials.

To be fair, what's the only examples of "too new" being a detriment to someone? Out of all the characters in Smash that was added within the year Smash was being made, Greninja was the only character I can think of, right?... I don't feel "too new" is the problem, more like "what's next" if DLC can just add EVERYONE instead of just waiting for next time.
