The worst Mario game imo is SMB
It's pretty fun but I hate the physics, but thankfully, Mario Maker seems to have fixed it to be more similar to later games

Best Mario game will always be SMW and I'm totally not biased by nostalgia
Cape, Yoshi, secret exits, Cape, Spin Jump, Cape, etc.

NSMB may have been repetitive after a while but they still had some of the most fun powerups, Blue Shell is near perfection
The Blue Shell was amazing, I wish it still were around.

Out of the 3D games, SM64 is the worst of the lot (the controls were awful and then there's the camera).

I mean yeah it's understandable because it's the first time Mario went 3D, but the other 3D Mario games improved on everything and now it's a pain for me to go back to SM64.

It's not even just the later 3D Marios other 3D platformers that came out during the same time did a lot of things SM64 did better (Banjo-Kazooie comes to mind).
SM64 is a product of its time that had its kinks ironed out and had its engine refined and fixed going forward, I can overlook some of its more archaic design choices for that reason alone.

Man the Blue Shell was my favorite powerup in any Mario game after the Hammer Suit, it was especially fun in NSMB's surprisingly good vs. multiplayer. Here's to hoping it comes back someday (as well as that multiplayer)

I agree, I appreciate the game a lot for laying down the groundwork for future games.

That still doesn't change my stance on it though, the game itself is not one I'd replay any time soon, but I respect it a lot.

As much as it has aged, I love SM64. I've always 100% it, and as much as they are weird at times, the controls and how Mario feels has me tied with him in Galaxy. Sure there's a couple of stars I hate, but I know this game inside and out, so it's not that challenging.

It's weird, I've most likely put the most time into this game than any other Mario game, bar maybe one of the Paper Mario games.

Sunshine has received a bit of hate from what I've seen. idk how, or why, but I guess it has to do with it being "different" from other Mario games.

Sunshine was to 64 essentially the same thing Majora's Mask was to OoT.

The sequel to a very critically acclaimed game that was very different from it's predecessor, so while critics liked it, fans were much more harsher on it.

The hate wore off eventually.

Favorite Mario game for me is indisputably Galaxy.

It's just so perfect in every way.

And then there's the Storybook as a cherry on top.

Super Mario 64 is my favorite Mario game, personally. I find the controls are honestly, quite amazing. It feels great to do things, you can add more depth to the gameplay more so than you could with 2D Mario with all the things you could do. Flipping, dashing, triple jumping, the speed you move at, climbing up trees then performing a flip off of them, being able to kick in air to stop your momentum, long jumping, and wall jumping really gave you a tremendous freedom that made the controls quite exceptional. They feel fluid and nice.

The varied course design with unique gimmicks like Tick Tock Clock and Big Boo's Haunt, the revamped underground that is more of like a cave which is different than any other Mario underground. The addition of interesting power ups like Metal Mario and Wing Cap, and fun stuff like firing yourself out of a cannon which in turn could be mixed with the Wing Cap.

I could really go on, but Mario 64 is a fantastic game and I love it dearly.

Sure, 64 hasn't aged well in some aspects, but I find myself coming back to it all the time. It's just a blast to play.

Galaxy is definitely a better game imo.

Wait. No one mentioned Super Mario RPG Sticker Star yet. What madness is this?
I was about to :)

But yeah, if you assume every mario game from nintendo, it';s just SS for me. Sure, you could argue that sms was rushed, sure, you could argue that the blue coins was painful annoying and tedious, but the amount of rushness that SS had is not even close to "stuff that is optional but a bit annoying". Sms, yes was rushed, but it was still very fun and really, it just makes me happy to play it.

SS, I wrote a giant essay that is basically saying that the goal of the game is just messed up. You could extract some good parts, but you can never get to them with how the core of the games hinders the enjoyment so much.....

And then you had kersti which......it;s just urhg urgh urugghrughhuhrgurhgu

I hate her so much.....

The thing is, barring some exceptions, Mario games have always been masterpieces. The least they can go is positive.
Most of them have been critically acclaimed, obv, and the innovation they have lies in their gameplay. So...

Sunshine to me is a phenomenal game.

I think the deal with Blue Coins being annoying (because I was at that point as a child) is the ambiguous nature of Shine Sprites. The game tells you that you need Shine Sprites to progress, it doesn't, however, tell you that is not the 100% truth. The way you beat the game is that you beat the first (either 6 or 7 I forget) levels of every stage and the final boss opens up.

You don't need a single Blue Coin, that's only for completionist to obtain all Shine Sprites.

By the time I got to Bowser, I had 80 something Shine Sprites and I felt the game was really long. Although it does have a lot of diverse content, when you play merely with the objecting of progressing, the game is made much faster. If only the game was more clear on the objective to get to the final boss, haha.

I replayed the game almost 2 years or 2 years ago to relive it. It's a great game for sure and I love the F.L.U.D.D. mechanic and how it adds a quite honestly unique element to the Mario platforming. It having controls like Mario 64 helped, too.

Super Mario Galaxy is the game that made me stop playing Mario games for a while. Meanwhile, Sunshine is my favorite Mario game.

Worst Mario game in my opinion:

Tie between New Super Mario Bros (for Wii). Hated the physics, and playing with friends was so annoying (Plus I think you were forced to use the wiimote and had to flick to jump?)

I also dislike almost all of the 3d side scrolling mario games, that wall jumping is BS, works different than any other game with wall jumping lol.

My favorites are Super Mario Bros 3, and Super Mario Bros World.

I think sunshine is
on its own.

Considering it was rushed it's

Because let;s just admit it, the game appears, sometime feels and is rushed. It;s probably the msot rushed fun game I ever played which is impressive and annoying because if it was THAT good rushed, imagine what it woudl be if it wasn;t.......man it makes me sad now :(

like I even made a definition when i talk about games about a feel that I noticed first in sms that I called the "sunshine effect".

Basically, it;s a feelin you get when you play a game and the game tries to make you hype and happy so much to the point where you do things with absolutely no purpose other than wasting your time and you are perfectly aware of that. The best examople is just LOOKING at delfino plaza, just LOOKING made me want to jumop from roof to roof and just appreciate the colors, it's pointless, I was my time, but I don;t care cause I somehow feel so much fun doing it!

When a game does that, it's impressive, the game doesn't really force you to do it, it makes you want to do it.

Another example is the
in TTYD, who did them with SP full?

*raises hand*

:)

Anyway, sms really was fun on that regard and even though it is so much rushed, I still feel it's so underrated. I honestly loved fludd, it just gave movements that let me be frank, I wish any mario game had them. I jsut love these so much......

What I was trying to say is that if I can criticise SS for being rushed, it;s because sms was......but the difference is it was enjoyable.....

You flicked to spinjump. Apart from that and moving the bubbles everything else was buttons.

I bought Splatoon today, yay for another game I can't play until next month
I also want to buy something else for 3DS, so I need some recommendations.
I remember seeing Fantasy Life and Little Battlers Experience on Best Buy, are those any good?

I enjoyed NSMB Wii. For me that was the moment where NSMB still felt, well, new. It improved upon the DS version in so many ways, including 4-Player Co-Op.

It wasn't until U and 2 that it started to feel like they hit a roadblock after the Wii version.

Favorite Super Mario game? Galaxy, all the way, followed by 3, 3D World, and New SMB Wii.

Once you get a copy of NSMBW, you should definitely try it out. This may be kind of surprising, but this is probably my favorite game of all time (along with Super Mario Bros. 3 and Kirby's Return to Dreamland).

Even though the game has some flaws (like reusing some old bosses), it still blew my expectatons out of the water and really provided a great experience (and that's very impressive for a mod that shouldn't even be called a mod :p).

When I first heard about the project in 2012, I instantly had the highest expectations any person could have. Those were even blown out.

All in all, I heavily recommend it.

64 hands down. I always go back to it no matter what, it's a true gaming classic.

Also what'd I miss?

tags on edit gives no laerts, jsut do you know :)

And I always put these images so.....

Anyway, the reasons it feels rushed isn;t the logistic, the logistic is stupidly simple like you would expect in any mario game anyway. It certainly isn;t the level design cause just looking at them you;re just like

No, the problem (and this is why it;s impressively good) is how complete the games feels and the actual controls. first, why 30fps? I didn;t knew it was 30, but then i realised that it just FELT (and it screamed) the very not fluid animation, running or walking was just.......off, it jsut wasn;t natural. Then, the L target mode was just WTH? how is it supposed to be useful and why is it so badly made? The animation is just.....what and the actuall usage makes almost no sense.....

And then you just have general precision with the inputs that made some levels such as the one where you had to fall into holes to get red coins and not fall down was very frustrating to do.

The camera is something requiring effort to even fix, and this isn;t the sm 64 type of camera that I could forgive them because limitations, it's the type that has the potential to be fine and it jsut isn't.....

And other stuff like the first level of the hotel being litteraly the worst troll in the game, the boat on the last level taking SEVERAL tries to eventually get how much too sensitive the controls are, etc etc and etc.

But as weird as it sounds, none of these impact how good the game is. This is why it;s impressive for me because If I was aware of these before I played, I would have VERY low expectation, but the way this game does it is it makes you too much happy that you would care much.

Oh and as for how the game feels complete, it doesn't with the abuse of the blue coins that were obviously done as a last resort by the lack of time to have more levels, and just some area feeling.....a bit too simple than it should be with the controls and movement.

It felt rushed, but it doesn;t mean it wasn;t good, this is very rare, I don;t think I could ever expect this.
