Well from their FAQ:

Honestly a good theory. Remember the E3 was about Transformation/Change, so showing a NX title would go against that. It's probably why Zelda Wii U wasn't at E3 either, it's likely being converted.

Yep, that was it. However one thing that raises an eyebrow is their similar appearance, but that could simply be traced to Mother 3's art style and to an extent, Smash Bros too.

Pikmin 3 was such am incredible game. A follow up on the Wiu U would be fantastic, with a bit more play time... mix up the story... colonization would be a cool theme.

Personally, I think it needs to be played in HD to be fully appreciated, so hopefully the 3DS is ruled out.

I think the 3DS would work well for the series, I think it suits it well.
