I wouldn't feel at all discouraged. He'd make as much sense as a secret character as he would a starter. (See Marth and also Lucas as opposite examples.)

Just keep the faith friends! These almost 15 years waiting for this have neared their end!

TBH, I feel I'm not going to get pumped for Takamaru now, just not my type I guess like Mac. Although his game is a classic IMO.

I do hope that if Takamaru is in the game, he gets revealed some time before release. It'd help Western players become more familiar with him, instead of unlocking him and wondering who the hell he is, like with Marth and Roy in Melee.

Plus, retro characters have traditionally been on the starting roster. I see no reason why this shouldn't be a continued thing.

I have high hopes for Takamaru, though i know better than to get them too high. I want him, but if he doesn't get announced here, there's always an E3 announcement possibility.

There's obviously something going down they wouldn't have a full Smash Bros. Direct if there was just one character they wanted to announce which skyrockets his chances by the way.
There will be more than one Newcomer I guarantee it.

I'm definitely feeling Takamaru and Palutena on Tuesday. Two characters I love, so hype.

I was thinking about how Takamaru may be revealed. On one hand, he is a pretty obscure character, so he could just be revealed through a gameplay trailer, like Villager.
It starts zoomed out from a Japanese castle, while calming music is playing in the back. It cuts to cherry blossoms floating in the air, and a letter floating around with them. A hand quickly grabs the letter and skims it over. He dashes away, ready to fight.
Later on in the trailer we see gameplay of Takamaru.

If Takamaru gets his OWN trailer, I for one want it to have a Samurai Jack style to it. Unlikely, but a man can dream, can't he?
I could see it starting with a black silhouette of Takamaru staring down Sandbag, and a few cutscenes to emphasize it (like in Samurai Kirby, I suppose). Then he dashes forward as the music gets faster and slashes Sandbag with his sword (there's a Pokémon animation that looks like what I'm imaging, actually, I just forget what it is). "Takamaru something something."

I really thought that Little Mac would have the Fight Theme in his trailer, the most iconic Punch Out song. But he went the fanservice route and gave us the Jogging Theme.
So I always thought that the nromal Nazo No Murasamejou theme would play for a Takamaru reveal, but I would prefer that they go with the more obscure but awesome Murasame Castle Theme.

This. Taka does have plenty of competitors to deal with for this Direct, especially a Dire Emblem or GBA rep with a helping of Palutena. In other words, an all out war for who will be revealed Tuesday.

I definitely think he will be revealed Tuesday.
I mean obviously if this was a normal direct they'd want to show someone a lot of people know.
But since this is a Smash Direct I think multiple people will be revealed so here is how I think It'll play out.
1. Well known western character
2. Well known eastern character
3. Takamaru the character that only true Smash Fans know of

My prediction is that we will see a Fire Emblem character as well as Takamaru for this upcoming Direct since the anniversaries of Fire Emblem, Fire Emblem Awakening, and Nazo no Murasame-Jo all lie in April.

I believe there will be plenty of people satisfied with playing as a samurai that can draw ninja and magic like elements, but I do believe most of the casuals will have no idea who he is. I don't think he's as obvious of a character as the boards are making him out to be, but I'm not implying he's unlikely or overrated.

The bold part is certainly true, considering I've had to explain him to all my friends at least a couple times when giving them all my myriad speculatory thoughts. That said, once I explained, everybody liked the idea of him, and I expect that will be the case if/when he's revealed. He's just too cool.

My experiences have been similar, when asked what older character my friends would like to see not a single one mentioned Takamaru, heck characters like Lip and Mach Rider weren't even brought up. Most of them were satisfied with the current set of retros simply because they weren't aware of the other possibilities.

After some explaining many of my friends fancied the idea of him being playable over the other retros, but the typical response when bringing up his name was, "Who's that? What game is he from?"

And afterwards it was usually, "I would've never predicted him. He sounds pretty awesome. What else can he do?" So at least among my Smash circle Takamaru was completely unknown, most of the overall character predictions were typical such as Mewtwo, Ridley, Chrom, Roy, etc. without prior knowledge of other retros. To casual players he's not going to be an obvious pick.

I think he's one of the more likely reveals, especially if we happen to get multiple newcomers at once this time around. Revealing a retro like Takamaru alongside a popular, well known newcomer would be a good way to get the reveal of a character not many people know about through while still maintaining positive overall reception and hype.

It's a toss up really. Actual, non-hardware Retro characters have historically been starters, and sources are 50/50 on Japan-only characters being starter/hidden, so it's not something I think we can really predict, so everyone's just going with what they prefer. He's been on my starter list since before the game announcement, so I'm sticking to it.

It was obviously an intentional case of Engrish, because Takamaru is a Japanese samurai from ancient times and probably can't speak English.

Takamaru vs Shishio is a match I'd like to watch, since both can use fire attacks.

Now that you've mentioned it, I should play as Shishio on J-Stars Victory VS tonight to see what type of attacks he should have. Then again, most swordsman in that game have many great ideas for the flashy attacks that Takamaru could do.

Imagine him having moves like Tsui no Hiken: Kaguzuchi.
