I though i would just point out something that made me stop and think a bit. in the beginning of this vid the guy talking says something along these lines, " for you purists who are used to playing in tourneys with no items...." i know this is a very sall tidbit and probably nothing, but i just found out interetsing to actually find proof that people on the inside of nintendo are aware of us competitive players. another reason why i think they are aware is because he specifically states tournies with NO ITEMS. ih he would have just said any tournies, they could have been still some noob a$$ tournies with FFA and items. but the fact that he mentioned 'NO ITEMS" really intrigued me. what im getting at is that they are aware of our tournie scene then what else are they aware of? maybe our:

tier list?
metagame?
all advanced tactics?
smashboards in general?
our combo/tournament vids?

To be perfectly honest, this sort of makes me feel comfortable about Brawl.
The sole mention of wavedashing would make me feel completely safe.

It'd be interesting if they had an unlockable physics change mode. Maybe call it "Melee" mode, or " Advanced", or something of the sort. It'd probably best be described as giving more control to the player with the stipulation that some of the convenient new mechanics would be lost. (ie self-controlled dodges instead of momentum, no auto-L cancelling, no reverse-ledge grab). Extremely unlikely, but realistically wouldn't be particularly difficult to implement codewise, as far a I can tell.

Of course, it's not going to happen. But options are always nice, eh?

I do think Nintendo is aware about the competitive scene of all of its games, they just don't focus all of their attention into it. Smash does takes care of it with the ability to turn items off and set Random to select just some stages and so, so I think Brawl will be great to both competitive and casual, just as Melee

The statement was actually made by the presenter at the press conference, who also mentioned that he is the one who translates Sakurai's comments every day for the Dojo updates. He seemed to be pretty knowledgable about not only Brawl but also about the Smash community in general.

You can see it on the huge IGN video called smash_full_demo_101107_wmvhd.wmv

Even tough they MAY be aware of the competitive smash community, their primary target still is the casual players.

But that person only translates the updates. He has no say in the development which is done across seas and by a development team whose members he probably has never met...

I don't think it's possible for it not to be good, regardless of how different it is from melee.

Oh **** seriously? In the same video as the one in first thread? *watches*
I'm pretty sure I heard something along those lines, maybe not from that video. I just remember watching that guy rolling and saying "......aaaaand thats a roll not a wavedash"

By calling us purists, he is rightfully calling the newbs "dirty azz scum." I'm so glad I'm above that.

You know, I think that the article on competitive smash in Nintendo Power (where they interviewed Gideon) kind of gave us the idea that they knew about it. Or the fact that an NOA employee posted here to clarify some stupid points in the article.

This aint new folks.

yes it was good confirmation that they do know at least something about the competitive scene in brawl... of course that doesn't necessarily mean they will try to cater to us at all in brawl... o well no use in predicting with the event coming so soon... well got to get back to writing my paper... excited for tomorrow

I remember seeing a small paragraph in Nintendo Power encouraging people in the MD/VA/DC area to attend Pound 2 (major east coast tournaments this year. 201 entrants). So we already know they at least acknowledge us.

Can anyone tel me why no video for game trailers seems to work for me >.> They all say 0:00 time whenever I go there.

Also Sakurai's development team was probably more or less tournament level seeing as how they had so many matches in Smash. And with so many people who play the game so much I think it would be pretty hard for none of them to know about the competitive scene. But still, statements like that are indeed intriguing.

I noticed that as well, and found it interesting. We all know Sakurai is Brilliant (im not because I forgot how to speel that), and I think in his diary he congratz someone for meeting at a smash tourny and getting married.

I think they do keep up with the smash world, they don't release there game and thats the end of it, they pay attention and make changes when needed.

Do they know of the smash boards: Most likly
Do they visit: Probably not

Do they know of tourny: Yes
Do they know of advanced tactics:
This gets tricky, I say yes they do, and they want to make them easier to pull of (or get rid of them) in Brawl, to appeal to the common Brawler.

the common brawler already has a set of moves to fool around with. the advanced players (or at least the players that take the time) should be rewarded for being able to do things the common brawlers can't. i would hate it if everything an advanced player could do, a newbie could easily pull off as well. sure they may not know its uses, but the fact that they can do it already just pisses me off

If relatively simple button combinations are the only way that you're better than someone who just picked up the controller, then I guess that could be rather aggravating. I for one welcome the newbs, with their simplified controls (even though Smash is hardly difficult now).

I rather like the nickname "purists" let's just call ourselves that from now on instead of what we normally call ourselves! :D

check out 3:14 actually start at 3:12 at 3:14 i believe mario does a SLIGHT wavedash
You this video is available on 720p. It's not a wavedash. The characters are all extra floaty and slippery. I think Sakurai did this to make WaveDashing less necessary for spacing. This is the same video where mario does the momentum dodge. There's no extra gameplay content in this. This video just adds him talking before the gameplay. IGN was allowed only 5 minutes of gameplay total before Tuesday. IGN posted the whole video on Tuesday. What's more interesting is that the spike in the center seems to pull nearby character closer since you can see Mario and Samus get pulled in slowly.

Nintendo was aware of the competetive community years ago.

Have you all forgotten the Nintendo power articles on Smash and its competitive aspects and high level techniques?

That was 2 or 3 years ago I believe.
