All they said was "more like this", not "more characters" - there's a billion ways to interpret that. More characters? NASB 2? Non-character updates? More platform fighters from GameMill or Ludosity? More Nickelodeon crossover games in general? More eSports titles from GameMill? More character presentations and involved marketing for other GameMill games?
I doubt things like crossplay need a super detailed showcase...

Either way, development doesn't seem to be over yet, so we could get pretty much anything. We just need the devs to give us an answer.

And I'm not expecting them to just drop crossplay for a just about dead game. I'm expecting another batch of DLC fighters and that's where crossplay will come.

Something interesting: the Ultimate Edition's US/Can release is a Best Buy exclusive, and I can't find Australian or UK listings anywhere, which makes me think the whole "made to get extra sales abroad" thing is true - it's apparently also just the regular first run cartridge with a download code for the DLC.
Shows that development time wasn't spent on the Ultimate Edition, so we're more than likely getting continued support.

I'm wondering who would come in the 2nd DLC pack. I hope that we get someone that no one saw coming. I like surprises, and the base game was so full of them. Who would expect characters like Oblina, Powdered Toast Man, Nigel Thornberry, and April O'Neil to be playable in this game?

I'd like a SpongeBob pick who isn't part of the main cast - someone like the Dutchman or Larry the Lobster.

While there’s obviously no rule in place, nor should there be, I can’t help but feel like the Dutchman isn’t in the plans because he’s a background character. I mean, when the Arnold stage explicitly excludes featuring Arnold as a background character and the TMNT stages explicitly exclude other Turtles and background characters, you can’t help but feel like that may be because they have those characters considered for possible inclusion later and they don’t want someone being playable and in the background? To be fair, in my opinion the Dutchman is really the only background character in the game who I think would be a good pick, besides maybe Gary for the comedic value. And again there’s absolutely no actual rule in place here. I just feel like this makes sense.
(Edit: I forgot about Krang. He’d also be a neat pick.)

Keep in mind Spunky only appears in the background of Hardcore Chores if Rocko isn't being played as.

I do agree that Spongebob have a lot of good characters outside of the main cast. That being said, I feel like Squidward is just way too important to skip. Also he just have a way too big moveset potential imo. I mean, just his unique body shapes and limbs alone will probably lead to some original moves, but add to that the music, painting, sculpture, dance and other stuff that he do and the moveset is just too easy to come up with to skip him for another Spongebob characters.

I think Spongebob has enough "main character" representation to be able to get a more out there pick, like DoodleBob, Mermaid Man, Man Ray etc.
I've always been sort of hesitant at the idea of Squidward in the game. Letting him beat up Spongebob ruins the joke.

I’m expecting Jimmy for sure, but it would be exciting if the others were more unexpected.

i just don't see what's exciting about DLC for a game I literally can't play with others anyway

Honestly, it would feel kinda wrong to have someone like Larry or Mermaid Man before Squidward/Krabs (especially since Squid/Krabs have extremely high fan demand, 3rd and 11th respectively in a massive poll are nothing to joke about). Plus Mermaid Man's VA passed away, so there's always complications there. I get people want surprise picks, but at the same time fans want major/important characters as well.

Plus, we never get to play as Squid/Krabs in these kind of games, while we've seen playable Larry/Dutchman before. Wouldn't that make Squid/Krabs the more unusual picks in the end anyway?

Smash did plenty of obscure picks alongside the main ones as well, but said obscure or off-the-wall picks were either A. Main characters of obscure franchises (Pit, Duck Hunt, Game and Watch, Wii Fit, etc), or B. picks from series that basically have all of their staples in (Piranha Plant, Bowser Jr., etc.). Yes, this game doesn't have to emulate Smash, but in Smash there was a method to the madness, whereas here in this thread it feels like "shock for the sake of shock", and even with a lot of the base game MC snubs there was a method to it (pacifistic Arnold, equal importance monster trio, Nigel's memes + being a dual protagonist, etc).

I would love to see Patchy at some point, though, he'd make a great commentator/announcer!

As for a Universe Pack 2, my personal predictions are Jimmy/Timmy/Beavers, Jimmy/El Tigre/Beavers, or Squidward/Zuko/Vlad. Depends on if they want to concentrate on adding new characters to existing series, and aside from Vlad they're all Top 10 picks from the poll (Vlad's #17). You could also swap Otis into a couple of these, since he fills the "meme character" demand that Hugh left behind. Hell, they could even do a larger pass if the first one sold well enough!

I really, really doubt that happened.

Do the people who actually want a second pass actually ever get to play this game with friends? Honest question.
So like:
1. Is playing against CPUs somehow "less valid" than playing with others?
and 2. just join a Discord if you want people to play with. That's where all online play is, and they're all quite active. I joined one recently and even when set to Switch matchmaking I get a ton of notifs.

I am in the NASB Grinders Discord, but...I dunno, people wanna matchmake when I'm in the middle of eating or playing a different game, and there's not enough requests for beginner matchmaking.

This is one of the ways the Competitive focus hurts the game.
Tournaments are actually one of the ways I want to be able to play with other people. The fact that my local scene dropped NASB after one tourney is one of the reasons why I suddenly joined the "NASB is dead" side.

I think that if we do get a second pass crossplay will come along with it. I’m not thinking that development is done until the devs officially say so.

Not... really? This is a symptom of the game's limited playerbase, if anything, not of the game being too competitive. You could make the game as casual as you want, but if the game's been out for a while and only has 6 concurrent players at any given time, of course you're not gonna have a lot of beginners throwing out pings in Discord servers. Pretty much any niche fighting game runs into this issue eventually, if not right away. (Rivals consistently has ~500 players each day, and it can be hard to find beginner matches in THAT game.)

Look at OctoDad in Fraymakers. He's fun as hell, and that playstyle could easily come with Squidward.

And yes, thank you, someone who agrees with me that "shock for the sake of shock" isn't a net positive, I feel like I'm alone in wanting the main characters half the time round here.

Just because some of us don't mind side characters doesn't mean we all think "every character must be like Hugh Neutron or this game deserves to be dead". I think you're just a bit too oversensitive to the idea of someone wanting a side character and like to paint an image that it means everyone only wants them.

Also, how did it take you this long to notice Drifloon's always been saying that?

First, I'm 100% against side characters ever getting in before the main character unless it makes a reasonable amount of sense, and by that, I mean that the main protagonist cannot perform the functions required in the game. Deuteragonists are acceptable. I will be cordial about it, and I even like playing as Hugh, but I will always believe that Jimmy should have been higher priority than Hugh. If they're getting more characters anyway, they could have waited on him to do the more important character first. Weird characters absolutely have their place, but should not ever take priority over the essentials.

Second - I don't spend every waking moment on SmashBoards, and even in threads I'm active in I only skim because I don't have time to read every post.

Look, I get that you think that. But it seems like you think SOME people having a slightly different opinion on that means EVERYONE has the exact opposite opinion.

Fair Point, there isn't a healthy stream of newcomers joining the game so it's mostly the core playerbase getting better and better.

I like seeing really nutty picks for games like this, but I also think this game could really use a few more more "big iconic even your grandma knows who they are" characters like Timmy Turner or one of the Rugrats. It's possible to want both. If it were all just one or the other it'd either be too predictable and boring or too niche and outlandish.

I'm all for getting creative once you introduce the main character if they're viable

Agreed!

Spongebob's a special case in that there's still big, iconic, highly-requested main cast members to add, I really don't think Doodlebob or Larry before Squid/Krabs/Plankton would be very well received.
