Or it will be an Ultimate Deluxe, in which case the essential of the work would already have been done. So one way or another, there will probably be "a lot" of newcomers.
Considering Mario Kart 8 DX, Pokken DX (which used the arcade version as a base), and other examples, it'd probably be more akin to the base roster + DLC with maybe a couple additional characters. If they do DLC we could get more, but at base it'd probably be more limited.

I feel that the 18 slots in the code don't really mean anything. The next smash game is just that - a new Smash game, it doesn't need to conform to Ultimate's limits. Hell, even in an Ultimate DX they could add more if need be.

That being said, if I had to make a roster with 18 new characters this is what I think it might look like.
  1. Waluigi
  2. Ashley
  3. Vaati/Ganon
  4. Raven Beak/Sylux
  5. Designated Pokemon
  6. Designated Fire Emblem
  7. Designated Xenoblade (nothing against any of those three series but the frontrunners for these slots don't exist yet)
  8. K.K Slider
  9. Octoling
  10. Akira Howard (Astral Chain)
  11. Issac
  12. Rhythm Heaven character (I don't know enough about the series to narrow it down)
  13. Iori (King of Fighters)
  14. Demi-Fiend (or some other mainline SMT rep)
  15. Phoenix Wright
  16. A Dark Souls/Elden Ring character (once again, I don't know enough to narrow it down)
  17. Rayman
  18. Kris (or another Toby Fox character)
18 new characters. Allow me to introduce myself.
  1. Waluigi
  2. Rayman (Both of them are revealed at E3, to make longtime Smash fans ecstatic.)
  3. Raven Beak (Metroid)
  4. Bandana Dee
  5. Crash Bandicoot
  6. Frisk (Sans is revealed as an Assist Trophy, making him the next Waluigi.)
  7. Isaac (Golden Sun)
  8. Marina (Splatoon)
  9. Greavard (Pokemon) (Why, yes. I will have him interact with Waluigi and Duck Hunt for his reveal trailer.)
  10. Chun-Li
  11. Alear (His gimmick is summoning characters like Lyn, Edelgard, and Hector. Fire Emblem characters that people would want to see if it wasn't for the old "ANOTHER ANIME SWORD FIGHTER" ruse.)
  12. Designated Xenoblade Rep
  13. Skull Kid
  14. Karate Joe (Rhythm Heaven)
  15. Tails (Sonic the Hedgehog)
  16. Takamaru (A new "retro rep", and one that's been long overdue.)
  17. Akira Howard (Astral Chain)
  18. Gruntilda
And just because I can, here's another Pass of 6 characters.
  1. Scorpion (Mortal Kombat)
  2. Goomba
  3. Paper Mario
  4. Ring Fit Trainee
  5. Geno (Super Mario RPG)
  6. Master Chief
If you had to give every 3rd party franchise extra stage what will you choose?
Tough call.

Sonic: Casino Night Zone
Metal Gear: The location of Revengeance's final battle, but with all real-world references scrubbed out.
Mega Man: Light's Lab
Pac-Man: Bring back Pac-Maze first, and then we'll talk about new stages.
Street Fighter: Battle Harbor
Final Fantasy: The Gold Saucer
Bayonetta: I don't know. Maybe a Hell-esque stage?
Castlevania: Wallachia
Persona: Thanatos Tower (Persona 5 already has a stage, so let's get one from an earlier game.)
Dragon Quest: Alefgard (A classic stage, to counteract the DQXI stage.)
Banjo-Kazooie: Gruntilda's Lair
Fatal Fury / King of Fighters: South Town Village (Because Fatal Fury deserves a stage, too.)
Minecraft: The Nether (But really, the stage we have is good enough.)
Tekken: Twilight Conflict
Kingdom Hearts: Traverse Town (So many options for original stages after Hollow Bastion, though.)

It was fun going through the potential characters and stages.

Imagine if they just did what they did with Mario Kart.

Gives us the same gameon a new console and then a few years later start dropping more paid DLC

Give us a few new characters and bring back Smash Run? Like how we got a proper Battle mode, with even some new modes, for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?
I miss Smash Run...
I mean, it would be something, but I don't think late DLC for Smash would work. For one, Smash Bros. is all about the hype with it's DLC, so focusing on the hype years after release would probably be more of a detriment. Second is with the DLC itself. With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the DLC majorly focuses on stages and mainly uses assets from other games(MKTour) to bring them to Deluxe. Compared to Smash Bros. where all the DLC would be brand new and made from scratch.

That's a possibility, true.

Edit. However, Smash Bros' roster is way more important to the game than Mario Kart's ever was, so I don't think they would use the same approach.

I've been fairly vocal about NOT wanting the next Smash game to be an Ultimate Deluxe, hoping instead for a reboot. However... There's been yet another "leak" recently which seems to reveal the next console will at the very least continue the NSO model and as such may continue the hybrid system model with backward compatible etc. If this is true, it's definitely not a stretch to see the next Smash be an Ultimate Deluxe especially since the architecture is already in place to support new DLC, etc.

One of the reasons I also brought up Pokken. Many Pokemon fans wanted more characters out of it as well, but at base it only provided one actual new character that wasn't from the arcade or Wii U versions. Just because there is a large focus on the roster doesn't mean they'd do a full expansion of newcomers, they can just have the full packaged Ultimate roster plus some extras to sell.

Honestly the only reason Mario Kart 8 deluxe bothered me so much was because 8's roster sucks compared to other Mario Kart's to me. Even with Link and Isabelle the amount of Koopalings and repeats feels so stupid.

But that seems to be getting rectified with them adding more characters in 8, who knows maybe we'll get the grand return of Rob and Pacman to Mario Kart.

I know there's a lot people that prefer the integrity of Mario Kart staying strictly Mario characters, but other Nintendo franchises and even 3rd party stuff in it would be amazing. To hell with it, why not have a Capcom DLC Pack with Mega Man, Guile, Dante, Leon Kennedy, & Phoenix Wright driving cars through an Okami setting? Or a Konami one with Snake, Alucard, Bill Rizer, Sparkster, Pyramid Head, & Bomberman speeding through a Goemon level?

If you had to give every 3rd party franchise extra stage what will you choose?
Metal gear: Mother base from MGS V
Sonic: Planet Wisp
Mega Man: Central highway
Pac-Man: Pac-Village
Street fighter: Forgotten waterfall
Final fantasy: Besaid Island from FFX
Bayonetta: Avalon forest
Castlevania: don't know
Persona: TV world
Dragon quest: Alexandria from Dragon quest 8
Banjo: Freezeezy peak
Fatal Fury: don't know
Tekken: Devil's pit
Kingdom hearts: Traverse town

Smash ultimate was well ultimate it basically included almost everything you can ask for far as characters and stages, so how can you top that? Here Is the only way you can top it imo:

- Smash needs to be an mmo like multiversus except it needs to learn from it's mistakes.

  • have enough content when released other then just characters
  • Graphics match the high standard that smash has in the past
  • Price for characters and skins stay reasionable like there current dlc 5 a character and 1 or 2 for skins are pretty affortable

There is many ways you could start this but I am going to go with what I think nintendo would go with and that is that is sell a 60 game with the content that is expected for that price and go from there.

  • start with the melee veterens plus a few newcomers
  • a promise that all veterans will eventally return
  • all characters will get a refresh on moveset
  • smashs will go back to playable final smashes
  • a story mode that will be added onto as time goes on
  • break the targets unique to a chracter is back

this would allow all characters to return (pending 3rd partys)while staying fresh will all the new content coming in
I'm guessing you meant "Smash needs to be live service" and not "needs to be MMO" because that's two completely different things (and Multiversus is not an MMO).

Well I'm not opposed to the Idea but they would need a good team with a good plan. And honestly I just don't trust Nintendo to do it. Every first party switch game with post launch content is a failure with either not enough content coming or contents coming way too slowly. I would argue that Smash is actually the closest thing to a live service game Nintendo did, but even for this game the content drop was just way too slow for live service standard.

18 newcomers? Let's see....

1. Rayman
2. Waluigi
3. Noah
4. Shovel Knight
5. Dante
6. Dixie Kong
7. Raven Break
8. Doom
9. Reimu
10. Isaac
11. Crash
12. Takamaru
13. 2B
14. Bandana Dee
15. Zero (MegaMan X)
16. Master Chief
17. Phoenix wright
18. Ryu Hayabusa

Even put in some reps that are mostly only big requests in Japan to even out the big western requests like Rayman and Doom. Tried to satisfy a lot of fans of different genres and knock out some overdue characters

Admittedly when Namco handling the Mario Kart arcade games shouldn't be a problem since they already had to say yes to the Pac-Man racing suit (and I believe they were already in the credits before that), I think one reason why they've never shown up as retro courses is that a lot of them have incredibly basic track layouts. There's a reason why Diamond City is one of their only standouts, not just because it's somewhat of a WarioWare reference, but because it isn't one of those incredibly basic tracks.

How about Mario & Sonic at the All-Stars Kart Racing Games? Wish Sumo stayed to All-Stars than Sonic only.

That said, Konami did do a couple Kart racing games(there's one on GBA that is also on the Wii U VC. Better get it before the Wii U e-Shop closes Would be cool to see it come to the GBA NSO. The other was mobile.) and Capcom IIRC had the Megaman Racing game. While I'm not expecting it anytime soon, any of Sega, Capcom or Konami would be cool to see in a future Mario/Nintendo Kart title.

I have the opposite problem. There’s got to be at least 50 characters I really want to see in Smash. Even more if we get to really unlikely characters. Basically, if I like a character from anything, I’d be excited to see them in Smash. Cutting the list down to 18 was really tough for me, especially with the additional limitation I put on myself to split first and third party reps evenly at 9 and 9.

Trying to play this is hard because we've got all th important Nintendo characters in the series already, most i would add would be third party, which feels unreasonable. lol
The only Nintendo characters i could think to add would be Akira and Isaac.

I don’t see why. Brawl had 18 newcomers and Smash 4 had 17 newcomers.
DLC is a thing now.

That being said, if I had to make a roster with 18 new characters this is what I think it might look like.
If I went purely by my personal wishlist?
  1. Ryu Hayabusa [Ninja Gaiden]
  2. Bill Rizer/Lance Bean [Contra]
  3. Arthur [Ghosts ‘n Goblins]
  4. Kunio/Riki [River City]
  5. SV-001 Metal Slug [Metal Slug]
  6. Bub/Bob [Bubble Bobble]
  7. Jill Valentine [Resident Evil]
  8. Morrigan [Darkstalkers]
  9. Nightmare [Soulcalibur]
  10. Kazuma Kiryu [Yakuza]
  11. Dante [Devil May Cry]
  12. Nakoruru [Samurai Shodown]
  13. Phoenix Wright [Ace Attorney]
  14. Bomberman [Bomberman]
  15. Captain Toad/Toadette [Treasure Tracker]
  16. Zero [Mega Man X]
  17. Alucard [Castlevania]
  18. Raiden [Metal Gear]
But if I were really in charge of the next Smash, I'd have another Smash Ballot, and then alternate between ballot winners, and my personal wishlist.

I don't really get where the idea that Alear is inevitable comes from. Unless the next Smash development start in the next few months or as already started last year, I actually think his chances are very low. Here's a quote from Sakurai on the topic of Robin and Lucina in Smash 4:

"Industry trends around the time when development begins is a pretty big factor. I started development on Smash for 3DS/ Wii U right after I’d wrapped up Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Fire Emblem Awakening was released one month after Uprising. So what’s popular around the time when I begin designing the game is important." (...) " For example, if Awakening was released six months later, Robin may not have made it in, and if it was six months early, they might not have even been considered."

Timing is very important for Smash characters, and it's especially important for Fire emblem because it's not a huge franchise by any means. Fire emblem was always very lucky with Smash bros development timing (Roy's game releasing soon after Melee, Awakening just released right at the time SMash 4 started development, Fates released at the time they were deciding Smash 4 DLC characters and Three houses was in development also when they were deciding Ultimate DLC characters. Now let's say Smash 6 starts development next years, would Alear be seriously considered? I doubt it, even Sakurai admits that a 6 months difference for Awakening could have mean that Robin wouldn't even have been considered. Personally I think's Alear chances are very low unless the game has already started development (which would surprise me a lot).

Here's the source by the way for the quotes Source gaming
I already explained myself there. Engage is a celebration of Fire Emblem and it's history. Rumors about Engage where always coupled with a FE4 remake, so that is likely what is next in store for Fire Emblem. Out of Alear and Sigurd, I see Alear as more likely. They could even couple them for this very reason and to make Sigurd work in the first place.

So yeah I do think Alear is close to inevitable. Just when didn't we get the latest Fire Emblem protagonist? It's been a trend even since Melee with Roy appearing before his game was even out.

So yeah I do think Alear is close to inevitable. Just when didn't we get the latest Fire Emblem protagonist? It's been a trend even since Melee with Roy appearing before his game was even out.

And that game did come out before Smash Bros. Brawl, so that was the latest game. And Ike was based on Path of Radiance.

I feel that the 18 slots in the code don't really mean anything. The next smash game is just that - a new Smash game, it doesn't need to conform to Ultimate's limits. Hell, even in an Ultimate DX they could add more if need be.

That being said, if I had to make a roster with 18 new characters this is what I think it might look like.
  1. Waluigi
  2. Ashley
  3. Vaati/Ganon
  4. Raven Beak/Sylux
  5. Designated Pokemon
  6. Designated Fire Emblem
  7. Designated Xenoblade (nothing against any of those three series but the frontrunners for these slots don't exist yet)
  8. K.K Slider
  9. Octoling
  10. Akira Howard (Astral Chain)
  11. Issac
  12. Rhythm Heaven character (I don't know enough about the series to narrow it down)
  13. Iori (King of Fighters)
  14. Demi-Fiend (or some other mainline SMT rep)
  15. Phoenix Wright
  16. A Dark Souls/Elden Ring character (once again, I don't know enough to narrow it down)
  17. Rayman
  18. Kris (or another Toby Fox character)
This is kind of a personal wishlist, but I'll try to make this a tiny bit realistic:

1. A grass type Pokemon
2. Mio (I don't know anything about XC3, but she looks cooler than the mc)
3. Paper Mario
4. A Fire Emblem character that isn't Alear
5. Black Shadow
6. Raven Beak
7. Daruk
8. Phoenix Wright
9. Shadow
10. Sol Badguy
11. Yu Narukami
12. Demi Fiend
13. Monster Hunter
14. Dante
15. Master Chief
16. Alucard
17. Zero
18. Chun-li

The / implies they're either an alt costume, or an Echo.

Kunio and Riki don't HAVE to be different. They weren't in the original RCR.
I think they should, though. It's pretty much shown that the Mach Kick is Kunio's signature attack while the Mach Punch is Riki's. In fact, even in the very first game, Riki kind of stood out as being one of the faster punchers in the game. So I think making them separate would do them more justice to their character.

And since we are talking about the Kunio series, just thought I should remind people that the very first 4-player fighting game actually came from this series.

When it comes to characters from visual novels and adventure games, my personal most wanted is Kyle Hyde. Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is a truly wonderful game, and I really hope I can get around to buying the sequel one day (probably around this summer after the 3DS eShop closes and I can use some disposable cash for it because hoo boy is it pricy on the aftermarket).

For the folks who haven't played it and only know it from That One Brawl Trophy, I definitely recommend checking it out, especially if you can get a physical copy to play on actual hardware, since the game makes use of a lot of the quirks of the DS (the 3DS preserves most of this, thankfully).

Someone who also wants Kyle Hyde? Never thought I'd see the day...

Personally, I've sort of been wondering just HOW Smash would tackle his design. Like, there's a surprising amount of ways you could make him stand out among Smash's more 'realistic' fighters. Make him 2D, make him 3D, but keep the design we see his series use, etc.

Honestly, Smash Run was fun.
No joke, Smash Run is why I have hundreds upon hundreds of hours clocked in on Smash 3DS. I practically prayed that if one thing had to return from Smash 4 going into Ultimate, it would be that. Like, that mode alone would increase my playtime of Smash Ultimate by at least a couple hundred more (if not a thousand...).
