I just hope that when Switch 2 is revealed, someone during the event just makes a comment and says "Yes, we're making Smash Bros." so there's finally an excuse to re-open the character support threads. Having all character discussion condensed into this thread is really getting overwhelming.
Tbh, I've been thinking about this and I'm like half-thinking they might? Especially if Sakurai's upcoming project is in fact Smash, because at that point he's basically already said it in his video, plus it's a big way to make sure that fanbase is likely to pick up a Switch 2 sooner rather than later.

Of course I think it's more likely we'll have to wait a while for a teaser along the lines of Inkling's trailer, but I dunno, I feel like they could mention it off-hand when they start revealing games, and either way I don't think Smash is coming out until next year at the earliest.

I definitely don't see the point in opening support threads until something more substantial happens. This site is already pretty dead and has like maybe 50-ish daily active users who would post in threads like that, let alone ones split up between characters. It's just pick your poison between a main thread which constantly cycles the same topics and having 50 support threads which are all under one page, and I think the former is preferable for sure as of current.

What's the one support thread you're gonna drift to when they eventually reopen for switch 2 smash?
Honestly, I think I have too many to name, but several of them will be Waluigi (again), Takamaru, Ayumi, Shadow, Chun-Li and Lu Bu.

I assume that once the new Super Smash Bros. for Switch 2 is released, there will be topics about DLC in general and for characters and stages and once they are done with the DLC, then there will be topics discussed about the new Super Smash Bros. that will be released on the successor to Switch 2 and so on. However, Smashboards is my favorite online forum and like everyone else, I want it to continue to exist and for us to discuss the Super Smash Bros series and everything related to video games in general. I'm writing this because the way the topic is being discussed makes me understand that Smashboards will eventually close, and we would never want that to happen.

What's gonna happen to this thread once the next Smash game is officially announced?
I imagine this thread will either get renamed or, if it's already over 2000 pages or another one has been made by the time the next game is announced, replaced with a new general speculation or newcomer speculation thread.

Other speculation sub-forums and character support threads will also almost certainly start being made.

Just wondering; do you guys think the Nintendo Switch 2 could be announced next week?

I ask because next week is when Donkey Kong Country Returns HD releases, and I don't think they'll show a Switch 2 reveal alongside the game launching if things that happened in the past means anything.

If not this week (which is looking to be the case) I think it’ll be sometime after next week. They may want Donkey Kong to have the whole week to himself.

Let’s be real, the next console’s announcement is a way bigger deal than the second port of a 15 year old game. They won’t want to take the attention from DK.

I thought so. No doubt in my mind that Donkey Kong would get to have its week, but I just wanted to make sure with you all if that was okay.

I'm kinda new to the boards, so I have a question.

Whenever it is that they announce SSB6, will there also be threads dedicated to gameplay speculation, or is it just character support threads? I'm basically asking if there'll be a thread to yap about fighter adjustments, new and returning advanced techniques, the game's physics, stuff like that. Speculation often veers away from the practical, and mostly focuses on things like characters, stages and move (but only on a conceptual referential level) predictions.

Bit late to the discussion, I'm uncertain just how active I'll be in individual support threads. But I love having the option to pop in and discuss epiphanies I have about specific characters, hear more about what their fans think they might play like etc. I've always been a bit of a drifter and tried to pop into different threads than just the characters I really want. Oftentimes that community engagement helped me grow to support characters I didn't before.

There are only a few characters who I think I'm passionate about, and fairly optimistic about, where I'd regularly pop into threads to discuss. Arle and Sans come to mind, maybe Chun-Li. Tom Nook and Off the Hook are characters I find myself talking about often, so I think I'd end up there too.

As far as characters I'm less confident in but will still be eager to talk about, I'll probably consider opening up a general Rhythm Heaven character discussion thread just to stir excitement around the series in Smash again all in one place. Unless people would be more interested to tackle individual threads like Chorus Kids etc? I just feel like a series support thread would have the greatest chance of frequent activity.

For fighter adjustments, I'm pretty sure once we have a trailer with characters in it, some of them will go up? Like after the first trailer, every character in it gets a character thread? I could be wrong since I don't check in on them much and Ultimate was kind of a special case, but I'm pretty sure character threads go up as the characters are revealed?

We do know there will be at least some big games for the OG Switch coming out with both Metroid Prime 4 and Pokémon Legends ZA as a sort of "last gasp" of the original Switch. I notably believe that instead of fully porting Switch games to the Switch 2 they would instead release optimization patches for some of the OG Switch games that would give them much better graphics if you boot them up on the Switch 2. I believe that Metroid Prime 4 and Legends ZA will have these optimization patches built in, making them sort of simultaneous releases for the Switch 1 and 2, but not in the same vein as Breath of the Wild.

Assuming the Switch 2 will support OG Switch games with better graphics, I'm also hoping that any games that are 30FPS on the OG Switch will be 60FPS on the Switch 2.

If we assume the Switch 2 offers some kind of graphical update for Switch games (which it may considering I think Nintendo patented some kind of DLSS-type tech not too long ago), it might give me the push I need to replay Xenoblade 2 and see how pretty it is with an upgrade like that lol

I don't know about that, but Nintendo's been using AMD FidelityFX in their games since 2022, and they even worked with AMD to make a special version of the technology for the Switch.

That said, SSBU's update if it gets one should be in the form of trying to decrease the input delay rather than making it render at 4K. It's already able to produce clean, crisp 1080p graphics on a regular Switch.

Yeah, but as far as I've seen in the patents, this is a recent one from like the very end of 2024 where they're planning on using neural network upscaling to increase resolution while also reducing storage space. Time will tell if they actually use it I suppose since sometimes Nintendo patents aren't for anything they actually use and if it would apply to original Switch games, but it's definitely a possibility considering the projected specs people have been talking about.

From that it sounds more like it'd be used on textures and video files more than being something like DLSS/FidelityFX.
This is true, but also, per the patent itself, "As an illustrative example, a video game that is designed to output images at 4k natively may have a total size of 60GB. However, if the size of the images produced by the video game engine are 1080p, then the total size need for the video game may decreased to, for example, 20GB. Even if the images are then output by the video game engine at 1080p, the techniques herein may be used to transform such images to 4k images during runtime."

So unless I'm reading it wrong, it sounds like if this is used for the Switch 2, it would basically be them making games at a certain resolution and then using upscalers and techniques to make it look higher resolution while not bloating their file sizes, which as far as I understand is basically what DLSS does, isn't it?

Note: I am NOT a big tech guy, so if I'm wrong, apologies lmao

I'm imagining things are like this over at Nintendo's HQ as they scramble to get all the promotional material in order as their top-secret unannounced system is being leaked left and right.
Maybe it was supposed to be revealed earlier but something happened. That could be one explanation.

Typically there is a general section, a new character section and a veteran character section. Each confirmed character typically gets their own section as well.

There will be a dedicated space to discuss what you want.

What resolution a game is rendered at has nothing to do with its file size. It'd have more to do with how many textures/video/sound files there are and the quality of them. 4K textures and videos are obviously going to take up much more space than 512x512 textures and 480p video files, for example.

I'm not sure when they could've done it earlier though. You don't want to reveal it before Christmas because the Switch is huge and you wanna grab one last holiday season for it, and the week of New Year's Nintendo had off, which is why the music app didn't get an update, which means they've only had like four days since coming back from the holidays lol

I was watching a videos on MVC2 stages and here is my pitch:

How would you guys feel if Smash 6 went in the way of Marvel vs Capcom 2 were all the stages and music were all complete original and unique like BF/FD. Desert, Airship, Carnival, Clock tower etc

All Previous old replaced via new stages with its own set of music. Maybe some based on certain series but not the actual locations.

Ehhh I don't know. MvC2's stages and soundtrack are certainly iconic, but here's 2 things to consider:

1. Those elements of MvC2 actually weren't all that well liked initially, people had to warm up to them over time. Even then, they went right back to series-based locales after that game.

2. Smash's identity since 64 is more or less centered around fighting within the universes of its franchises, and the music is also a big part of that. It'd be weird if they just... decided to forego all of that entirely, especially with the amount of stages these games tend to get now.

It'd be an interesting experiment, but I don't think it'd really go over super well with the fan base. At the very least, licensing stuff would probably be a LOT easier lmao.

Pretty much this.

If they wanted to do a few more Smash original stages, then great, I'd be super down for that, but to completely remove locations based on the actual games in your big crossover is just a bad move.

If they want to go for super vague locales/more creative liberty, then just add a few stages from really old titles. That's how we got stuff like Temple and Summit after all. It's just a shame that post Brawl, any "retro" stages are limited to emulating the original game's graphics. I'm actually someone who'll defend the aesthetic for some stages, but I'd like to see more of these sorts of locations be reimagined into proper settings for Smash.

Hmm a crossover game with no crossover stages or music.

Don't think I'd be a fan...

Probably just burned out a bit like with some other characters or series. Though I didn't see much attention in regards to Ys X compared to the attention the Trails remake got.
