Probably Like a Dragon and Infinite WealthWhich Yakuza games are you talking about?
Because this is definitely NOT a turn-based RPG:Probably Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth
Pyra can charge B so is that what you mean but like everyone's smash attack can begin in the air and be charged? It's a pretty well known fact by now that Sakurai considered chargeable aerials for Ultimate. I'm surprised this hasn't happened by now to be honest, it seems like a pretty natural evolution of the SSB formula.
I like Links art on the 64 boxart. The original Super Smash Bros. had a flat, 2D aesthetic for the box art and instruction manual art so, in a way, it’s kind of returning to its roots. I loved those classic artworks for the old NES and SNES Super Mario games so it would be cool to see Mario in that classic style again.

Yeah, from the way he talked about it he called aerial attacks the dividing line between casual and competitive play, which I can kinda see but I also definitely don't think implementing them would add too much complexity. He talked as well about how Ultimate being built on the same fundamental gameplay mechanics as 4 eased development, so that might have been a big factor too. I think it would just be good to add more mixup potential, and at worst they'd just be another set of moves that's mostly useless for competitive play but fun for casual play while button mashing. It's a pretty well known fact by now that Sakurai considered chargeable aerials for Ultimate. The series pivoted to turn-based RPGs recently, starting with the seventh gameBecause this is definitely NOT a turn-based RPG:

I remember the Fraymakers devs saying that air dodges are an extremely powerful tool in a platform fighter, and they made air dashed aerial attacks put you in freefall as a result. It would be interesting to see if Super Smash Bros. comes to a similar conclusion.I'm not saying anything too creative or new here, but I would still like to see how Smash handles air dashes. Maybe they'd feel its unnecessary with the retooled air dodge system, but with how crucial aerials are to Smash's gameplay already I feel like having a more reliable universal aerial approach option would shake up and speed up the gameplay in a very good way.
Perhaps it would do a good deal to keep zoners in check too, I guess depending on how it's implemented and what properties an air dash would have. Would characters have varying air dash lengths or speeds? I think I'd like to see them toy around with that, and I think it would have a valuable function at any level of play. Assuming it'd be as simple as double tapping in midair or something.
A lot of Multiversus characters seem to be capable of this, and while using such moves is easier due to how darn floaty everyone is, I still agree that it would be pretty easy, and kind of intuitive if its framed like Smash Attacks.Yeah, from the way he talked about it he called aerial attacks the dividing line between casual and competitive play, which I can kinda see but I also definitely don't think implementing them would add too much complexity. got a pic for those os us unfamiliar? No one's going to agree with this, but I think the next Smash would be neat if it went the Naruto Ultimate Ninja aesthetic (the original 2D fighters on PS2, not the Storm series of arena fighters).
Hard to really find a good image since the games are so old now, but I guess the best way to explain what I'm picturing is on the order of this close up.got a pic for those os us unfamiliar?
Hmm could workHard to really find a good image since the games are so old now, but I guess the best way to explain what I'm picturing is on the order of this close up.
I dunno, this kind of shading would be neat to me.
I loved these games to death when I was little! No one's going to agree with this, but I think the next Smash would be neat if it went the Naruto Ultimate Ninja aesthetic (the original 2D fighters on PS2, not the Storm series of arena fighters).
A take I honestly kind of vibe with, lol. I like the idea of L-Cancelling but in practice it feels kinda nuts due to how big a part aerials already play in Smash.L-Cancelling: I can't do it so I don't like it lol plus it makes fighting someone who CAN pretty much impossible. It's almost like a cheat code and makes an already difficult game harder.
Which is just two games. All the rest of them are beat'em ups.The series pivoted to turn-based RPGs recently, starting with the seventh game
I guess the best way I want to describe what I think would be neat is sort of going back to Smash 64's artwork aesthetic but with a little more modern edge.I loved these games to death when I was little!
That said, while I do love the look, I don't know if I'd want this for Smash in particular. Though in a way, I feel like this could actually be somewhat comparable to MvC3 or even the new Garou. The PS2 Naruto games were clearly going for the whole manga panel aesthetic, and there's a similar philosophy in Marvel 3 trying to mimic the look of a comic or the sort of halftone shading seen in City of the Wolves.
I guess I'd have to see a modern tech interpretation of the style to see if it'd be a good fit or not.
L-Canceling: Considering there is virtually no situation where L-Canceling wouldn't be the optimal option, it'd get really annoying to always have to press it every single time. Ultimate going the route of having much less landing lag in general is effectively the same thing but without the extra button press and I feel this is much better for all levels of play.Unrelated to the current artstyle discussion but all this talk about universal changes got me thinking. What mechanics would you all want to return/remove in the next Smash? As for me, my thoughts are like this:
The next Smash game should take aesthetic inspiration from the hit 90s cartoon Captain N: The Game Master.Personally I think the next Smash game should take aesthetic inspiration from the hit 90s cartoons, Reboot and Transformers: Beast Wars.
This just reminds me that one of my many pipe-dreams is Zelda getting a full CDI alt, I like that outfit. If the next Smash has a shop system, they should give it some character and have an actual shopkeep, and I think it being Morshu would be cool. The next Smash game should take aesthetic inspiration from the hit 90s cartoon Captain N: The Game Master.

Look at those game-perfect representations!
Superheavies. They're my favourite archetype, and I can think of two candidates who would, presumably, fit the mold: Eggman and Gruntilda! Eggman would have tricks and traps and probably be similar to Bowser Jr and Snake. Gruntilda would be our first female superheavy, and the first heavy mage! Are there any character archetypes you’d like to see more of (or any of, if not already represented) in Smash, whether from a gameplay, character or visual perspective? It could be something like wanting a samurai character, another monstrous character like Ridley, another ice element specialist, or another heavy grappler.
I’ve always loved the warrior/huntress archetype. Characters like Petra, Rhinka, H’aanit, Nidalee, Zhu Rong, and Maya are always among my favorites in their games. Not entirely sure who among these has much a chance to make it into Smash but I’d love to see any of them.
I second this. Ultimate was the game where I realized I like the fat **** characters who hit hard, thanks to K Rool and Incineroar.Superheavies. Interesting question in my experience even in Smash the quickest way to untrain any technique is to punish attempts. I guess it'd be pretty nuanced in terms of programming but essentially if people exploit say, chain grabbing, then they can either make it impossible to land a grab after a grab release or they can even make that second grab attempt auto miss AND leave you in extra lag. Idk tho lolA take I honestly kind of vibe with, lol. I like the idea of L-Cancelling but in practice it feels kinda nuts due to how big a part aerials already play in Smash.
Maybe we could have a system similar to grabs where you have a brief cooldown between L-cancels, so you have to choose precisely when to L-cancel an aerial, instead of training yourself to cancel every single aerial you do until it's ingrained into your muscle memory? I don't know.
(Regardless, I'm glad the discussion is currently on the gameplay/new mechanics a new Smash could bring. It's a breath of fresh air for this thread, lol)
I thought I was being dramatic thinking 6 lol 5 frames people get goodCutting it at 5 frames would go a long way.
The new ones, and the most popular ones.Which Yakuza games are you talking about?
Yeah that’s an arpgBecause this is definitely NOT a turn-based RPG:

Axel Stone. He's from Streets of Rage.Yeah that’s an arpg
While the serried has changed up gameplay styles it’s very much an rpg series
Beat em ups are proably the least likely genre to get in bot becuase of the genre itself but.
the most popular beat em up character that they can actually use are like.
Axele rose
Maybe someone from river city girls
Maybe battletoads but there’s like 17 other Microsoft ip’s that would get in before them.
their best case scenario is that Sakurai is a super fan of those games, if not than I really doubt their chances.
it’s important to remember despite smash being a Nintendo directed crossover it’s also Sakurai putting his favourite games in as characters .
That’s how someone like terry made it in.
That’s embarrassing cause just played streets of rage 5 .Axel Stone. He's from Streets of Rage.
Axl Rose is a member of Guns N' Roses.
As for the beat em up genre, I don't think they're frontrunners, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if we got someone or some content from any of Kunio/River City, Final Fight, Streets of Rage or even Battletoads if Microsoft is still on board.
Can you drop a source on the Terry comment? Actual comments from Sakurai contradict your statement.
4. The most recent SoR game was 4.That’s embarrassing cause just played streets of rage 5 .
Eh whatever.
In the terry direct
He said both SNK were extremly agreeable pretty much and also that he grew up playing Fatal fury and Kof
furthermore with the way characters are selected. A large amount by nitnendo and then narrowed down by Sakurai to a handful.
sorry. when is said i played 4 i meant i played it back in like 2017 so i forgot which number it was.4. The most recent SoR game was 4.
SNK being easy to work with and Sakurai playing SNK games in his arcade days don't correlate to who selected the characters.
Sakurai explicitly stated that Nintendo chose the Fighter Pass lineups. Sakurai does have the power to veto choices he thinks won't work and can pick when he's given choice (like with the Gen 6/7 Pokémon), but we don't have any details of the actual dealings with SNK aside from their openness to including lots of music and cameos.
Sakurai is a big SNK fan, but this isn't him outright choosing to do a Fatal Fury character and more of being presented with the opportunity by Nintendo who already wanted to collaborate with SNK. As far as we're aware, Sakurai's preference lies with Iori from KoF based on his comments in the same direct, but again, that isn't exactly concrete either.
That's clearly a beat'em up, not a turn-based RPG like you claimed.Yeah that’s an arpg
No...it's not. While the serried has changed up gameplay styles it’s very much an rpg series
It's also important to remember that Smash features popular, iconic series, which is what River City is. And with the series being so popular in Japan, there is a good chance that Sakurai is a fan of it. There's a video of him playing the first game (Renegade) on Youtube.Beat em ups are proably the least likely genre to get in bot becuase of the genre itself but.

An action rpg is NOT turn-based though.Yeah that’s an arpg
yakuza is a turn based rpg nowAn action rpg is NOT turn-based though.
Like, even if you were right on this being an ARPG rather than what is really is, a beat-em-up, your original statement was that it's "a turn based rpg" which it is not.
So those other games don't exist now?yakuza is a turn based rpg now
That doesn't mean the other games don't exist anymore.yakuza is a turn based rpg now
Wadda ya mean? Final Fantasy is my favorite hack n' slash series. That doesn't mean the other games don't exist anymore.
That's like saying Final Fantasy was never a turn-based RPG because modern games aren't.
