Congrats on refusing to actually read my reply. Also, is saying something like, "Geno was a hugely popular character so we decided to upgrade him to a premium costume" considered special treatment? If so, your negative bias is showing and you aren't really worth discussing this any further.

I know it might be hard for you to fathom, but yes, many of us DO get outside Smashboards, and yes, Geno is far from the most iconic character in the universe, but you'd be surprised how many gamers older than 25 actually DO know who he is. Ironic of you to acknowledge his popularity and then proceed to doubt that same assertion. You also seem to forget that Krool and Banjo were also relatively obscure until their respective fanbases actually SUCCEEDED in getting their characters in the game by doing exactly what the Geno fans are/were trying to do: SUPPORT THEM PUBLICLY.

LOL I love getting lectured about logic by, again, someone that simultaneously acknowledges Geno's popularity while at the same time arguing about why said popularity isn't worthy of acknowledgement. Being able to recall actual past shout-outs by Sakurai is not being emotional. Being emotional is rejecting all logic to hate on a character simply because you have no attachment or liking for them.
Geno is a character that I've gone on record to say multiple times that while I don't care for him, I also don't dislike him either, if he gets in, that's no skin off my nose, if he doesn't, the same. He's a character that I'm truly neutral on.

Go ahead and dig through my post history if you feel like it, you'll actually find me playing devil's advocate in Geno's favor on multiple occasions. Hell, I did so last night, it's not even that hard to find.

However, all I see in this reply is emotion. I will say, typing in all caps and denouncing someone as being negative biased without doing any background checks is a bad look.

Also, I don't wanna rate all the reveal trailers, so I'll just say my personal favorites and my least favorites with no order.

Obviously, Sephiroth's is there. The sheer epicness of AC's One Winged Angel, Sephiroth cutting Galleem like he was butter, all the fighting choreography that references Advent Children and the absolute sheer amount of characters present. That trailer really took the concept of a crossover and ran with it.

Other than him, I really liked Little Mac's, Kencineroar was pretty good, K. Rool was goddamn hilarious and Banjo managed to make me laugh with the same stuff, Terry's was great because it showed all those cool SNK characters through reenacting some scenes from the older games which is a really cool thing to do and I can't talk about good reveal trailers without "EVERYONE IS HERE!". I just can't.

As for my least favorites, there's really only two. Isabelle's was boring as all hell and was only salvaged by revealing a new AC game and Byleth's was also incredibly underwhelming, and that comes from someone who wanted Byleth as their most wanted first-party (at the time). Byleth's trailer was only really saved by Solon's meme potential and Sothis' jab on the amount of swordsmen. Also, the gender swap was stupid in a funny way.

The situation with Geno and whether or not the Mii costume will come back reminds me of Marvel vs. Capcom 3. One of the most heavily-requested characters for that game by fans was Mega Man X, and they definitely made that clear through livestream chats and fan request polls (hell, Capcom held a poll asking fans who their most requested character was, and X was ranked #1)... and in the end, after the Ultimate update came out and development on the game was completely finished, the fans' efforts only amounted to, well, this:
Zero_DLC_69667_640screen.png

No, that isn't a playable X... but the game does have Zero as a playable character, and Capcom was releasing DLC alternate costumes for the game, so if you put two and two together...

In fairness, Capcom did eventually listen. Say what you will about Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, but at the very least, that game finally brought Mega Man X into the series as a playable character. Smash Ultimate did the same thing with three of its biggest fan requests ( :ultridley: :ultkrool: :ultbanjokazooie: ), so at the very least, it'd be nice to know why that trend of making fan favorites playable suddenly stops before:geno:, despite fans clamoring for him to become a fully playable character for literally years at this point.

I want Geno but this kind of entitlement is a complete embarrassment. You aren't owed anything just because you waited a long time.

Who are the villains we still need in order to say the most iconic ones are in the game?

I'd say:

Akuma

Dr. Robotnik

Team Rocket Grunt/Giovanni (Although Mewtwo might work fine since he's the final "boss" of Red and Blue).

Albert Wesker? (Assuming we eventually get a RE rep).
Ganondorf actually getting a unique moveset.

Calling a reply emotional to invalidate it is a pretty pathetic retort. For the record, I only use caps to emphasize language since people (ahem) tend to gloss over key points in my posts. You'll note that I wasn't typing in all caps. Only key words and phrases. And by the way, I'm not going to bother background checking every person I respond to. I highly doubt you would have background checked me. I'm going based off what you're saying now, and what that is seems pretty biased and emotionally driven to me. Again, if you actually read my post, my expectations for what Sakurai would say regarding the possible costume are not that unreasonable. It's not special treatment to simply acknowledge why a decision was made.

Although K. Rool was my most want.

I gotta say Sephiroth IMO to date has the best trailer, the way he's introduced, how serious his trailer is (Even Ridley's had a bit of humor with how he spins Mario's hat), not to mention probably one of the best video game songs I've heard in my life I'll probably be listening to lots now.

Also consider the fact that as PO'ed as Isaac and Shadow fans were to get the bone at the last possible second with regards to base game release, Geno fans had to wait almost TWO YEARS for closure, even having to endure the possible bone-over when Hero was released. That's a pretty long time to string along such a sizeable amount of the fanbase. And it's not like it would be the first time Sakurai has offered a shout-out to a popular character that he's costumed. Regardless, I don't expect a full eulogy or anything, just an acknowledgement or something.
My dude, no one has strung you along. Nintendo hasn't said or done a single thing with Geno since Ult released so how could they even begin to pull on a string when it doesn't exist in the first place? If you feel strung along it's probably because you've created an imaginary string and pulled on it yourself. Fans need to get over this notion that they are "owed" something by Sakurai/Nintendo/Smash. No character "deserves" to be in Smash. In fact, only 3 more characters are going to get a spot so the other thousands are going to be left out without a mention. But you are worried that a character you like will get a costume and not get a personal platitude from Sakurai? Seems entitled imo.

Excuse you, but I'm fully allowed to acknowledge the difference between waiting a few months to be disappointed and a couple of years. If you don't care, good for you, but don't insult yourself throwing around accusations of entitlement when you don't even know what I was saying. I wasn't demanding Sakurai do anything. I was merely saying that I anticipate he will. If speculation is entitlement, then I suggest you crack open a dictionary sometime and sort those two out.

I never said I was "owed" anything. I was never 100% expecting Geno nor do I feel he was "robbed" in any way. Stop projecting these stupid notions of entitlement. I simply figured that Sakurai would say something about it since he acknowledges Geno's fandom and how long it took for this to happen. If he ends up throwing the costume over his shoulder without a word, I find it a little insensitive, but whatever. I won't lose sleep over it. Geez, you people got major hang-ups every time someone even mentions the freaking puppet.

I don't believe anything I've said is anything emotionally driven in the slightest. I feel no strong way about the puppet, he's either shown on the 17th and it's over, or he's not and he's still very much in the running.

The odds definitely do not look good for him right now, but to everyone saying that he's 100% dead... he's not, he's still very much in this until we know for sure on the 17th. I still, however, see no reason for Sakurai to make much of a fuss about the costume. He may have a nod towards his popularity, but that's the most I see, and if he's not a Premium Mii, then I honestly don't expect much of anything at all.

I do not believe there's any need for hostility here, which I'm seeing, when we're just having a discussion.

I think that Cloud's final smash might just be a unique one for Sephiroth only. Even then I don't know if he'd use it for his FF7 skin considering he has a different buster sword than the one he uses in Advent Children. It's probably just a cosmetic change for fan service purposes.

Also, if we're rating favorite trailers, here's mine for Ultimate (character bias included):

Has the no crossover rule ever been broken? Like prior to laura croft in brawlhalla and master chief in fortnite is there any precedent of a character crossing over in another game and being announced for smash shortly thereafter?

I was thinking in terms of getting the most iconic villains into Smash. Who do you think is most famous?
That I'm not sure of. I think Akuma is the more popular character, but I'm not all that well versed in the Street Fighter characters's impact aside from Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li.

Now that I think about it, Sephiroth's trailer is just Ridley's trailer on steroids. The joke has a better payoff, the shocking imagery of gaming icons getting stabbed is even more impactful, and instead of showing the characters about to engage in combat, they go at it for a solid minute.

Also, Ridley makes a first impression by murdering two of the greatest platforming characters in gaming, and then Sephiroth 1-Ups him by killing a god that has control of hundreds of other gods.

Has the no crossover rule ever been broken? Like prior to laura croft in brawlhalla and master chief in fortnite is there any precedent of a character crossing over in another game and being announced for smash shortly thereafter?
Terry was in like, 2 other fighting games before Super Smash Bros.

I know it hasn't happened in a while, but the voices in my head are going off again and they're telling me Sephiroth will probably be a "shortly after this presentation" release. Just noting that while it's true that the last three fighters all weren't, those three fighters were also revealed and showcased at the exact same time. (I get we were given a major hint with Min Min but still). The gap between TGA and the showcase aligns nicely with the time between those three showcases and the fighters' releases.
He looked pretty much ready to go, yeah. There might be some days between the Presentation and release because the trailer did not show off what exactly Reunion (the One Wing / KH mode) does; and there are some aspects that might need polish.

I'm doing my tier list of the best reveals so far in Smash Ultimate

SSS+ tier::ultsephiroth:
S tier: :ultbanjokazooie:,:ultjoker:,:ultkrool:, Everyone is here, :ultridley:
A tier: :ultsteve:, :ult_terry:, :ultsimon: and :ultrichter:, :ultinkling:, :ultchrom:
B tier: :ultminmin, :ultincineroar: and :ultken:, :ultisabelle:, :ultdarksamus:, :ultbylethf:
D tier: :ultdaisy:
I'll take a stab at this (heh) - pre-and-post-release (Long):

S:

Everyone is here: No need to explain why.

:ultsephiroth: : We'll have to see Post-release, could be an annoying-as-hell character to fight against. Curious to see what his Classic will be. Still, loads of potential with him, and could wind up really fun to play as. The character design (so far, first impressions mind) screams "I want to manipulate my oppon- puppets."

A:

:ultridley:: Swiss army knife? Yes, please! Post-release I've cooled on him a tad: he could use a little more weight. While super-heavies typically are feast-or-famine, Ridley in particular suffers from it because he dies earlier than say Dedede or Rool.
:ultbanjokazooie: : Grew up with the characters, so yes indeed! Cooled off on them Post-release. They could really use some QoL fixes - their attacks are currently just slow enough that they become arguably over-reliant on Wonderwing for KOs. Which is a problem when Wonderwing is limited.

B:

:ultsimon: / :ultrichter: : Brought in tons of stuff, and they even got the "Die Monster!" in there. They're cool concepts, just a bit undertuned, overshadowed and prone to being figured out. Would've like to see just a little less reliance on projectiles, and a bit more focus on the whip (aside from some slight de-cloning wishes).
:ultken: : Hey, cool, a pretty exciting opportunity for an Echo! And this one didn't disappoint thankfully. Post release I became a fan of his combo and shield break strings. Shame that his two input moves are kinda hidden and not obvious for some reason.
:ultjoker: : Set the tone really nicely, and well-timed reveal. Post-release, been mixed on him. Arsene's still a bit too strong, especially with Tetrakarn's / Makarakarn's spamability.
:ultsteve: : Sakurai really commited to something so complex. The madman. Warmed up to the character post-release, because holy **** the versatility. Minecart is stupid though.

C:

:ultinkling: : Not a fan of Splatoon when the Squid was revealed, but warmed up to them post-release. Some of the aerials are strangely powerful though, although it kinda makes sense with the Ink mechanic.
:ultdaisy: : Set off the Echo train... and oh dear that did not age well post-release. She's needlessly enforced as identical to Peach - for crying out loud, she could really use some de-cloning instead.
:ultkrool: : Impact was a bit lessened by Ridley, but still welcome addition. I have cooled off on him since - while he's got a pretty decent gameplan now, I kinda think that he could really use some small QoL fixes so he's not that reliant on Krown / Kannonball at every opportunity.
:ultdarksamus: : Another interesting Echo opportunity at the time, so I thought. Shame that the overall concept did not translate to reality and she's mostly identical to Samus. Could use some de-cloning.
:ultchrom: : Did not have any reaction towards him at the reveal ("Eh, another FE character"), but post-release he became one of my favorite Echoes despite it all. It was clear that he has his own playstyle a bit different from Roy's, and the "Chrombo" sacrificial KO was hilarious to watch at release, when that was borderline busted.
:ultisabelle: : Expected something more... but hey, won't complain. Post-release, I feel bad for her. She could really use some buffs (so could Villager) - Isabelle in particular since her more trapping style doesn't really jell with her moveset.
:ultincineroar: : Preferred Decidueye because that was my SuMo main, but post-release I warmed up on the cat. Insane burst! Just a bit too slow and kinda predictable though. QoL fixes would do it wonders.
:ulthero: : Was not really hyped at the reveal. Went up to S tier post-release though because this character is hilarious. My only gripe - a major one - is the Language Barrier on the menu.
:ult_terry:: Like with Hero, was not really hyped, but became one of my favorite DLC characters post-release because this character's explosive as hell. Only problem is that he - like Ryu and Ken - suffer from the "Special inputs are mapped to both A and B buttons"... which I kinda get is true to the arcades, but man, why do I have to go change the control options when I wanna use these three just to avoid misinputs?
:ultbyleth: : Was hoping Dante, not going to complain too loudly though. Post-release... I've warmed up to Byleth quite a bit since (s)he can be outright explosive in the right circumstances. Shame though that the design is non-synergestic enough that (s)he winds up overly reliant on a couple moves.
:ultminmin : Was not a fan of ARMS at the time of reveal, but I've warmed up a bit to her since. She seems a bit overtuned - not a huge issue; the mere ability to punch even farther away than Sephiroth's Masamune would be a challenge to balance either way. Still, it is a really interesting concept and kudos for the execution at large.

Ngl, I would a l m o s t take Ganondorf, Daisy and Dark Samus getting unquie movesets over the next three DLC.
Daisy and Dark Samus, yes.

Ganondorf... eh, I'm of two minds about that. On one hand, yeah he's the King of Evil. On the other hand, he's been the King of Disrespect since Melee and I love that incarnation because of that. I also grew up on Melee, so that explains well, everything. I'm pretty happy that they gave him DORIYAH - he might need something else other than "Even more unneccessarily powerful Falcon Punch".

And as an aside, I did post the "Likliest TGA characters" and I'll fully accept the L there.

Capcom has too many good characters don't they?
Hmm, let's see....

-Monster Hunter
-Devil May Cry
-Darkstalkers
-Rival Schools/Project Justice
-Dragon's Dogma
-Ghosts'n Goblins/Gargoyle's Quest
-Final Fight
-Captain Commando
-Dead Rising
-Onimusha
-Dino Crisis
-Power Stone
-Sengoku Basara
-Okami
-Star Gladiator
-Bionic Commando
-Asura's Wrath
-Strider

-God Hand
-Breath of Fire
-Lost Planet
-Zack and Wiki
-And some other titles like Battle Circuit, Red Earth, Armoured Warriors, Gotcha Force, Quiz Nanairo Dreams, Cyberbots, Ghost Trick, Tech Romancer, Maximo, and etc.
Like good lord, not only a good amount of very highly recognised IPs, but their character designs are top-notch, have a recognisable style and are incredibly varied, even with their much less-known IPs. It's no wonder people want just a Capcom All-Stars fighter.

Well if I remember correctly Terry was announced for Fighting EX Layer like 5 or 6 months before his Smash reveal.

In fairness, Capcom did eventually listen. Say what you will about Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, but at the very least, that game finally brought Mega Man X into the series as a playable character. Smash Ultimate did the same thing with three of its biggest fan requests ( :ultridley: :ultkrool: :ultbanjokazooie: ), so at the very least, it'd be nice to know why the buck suddenly stops with :geno:, despite fans clamoring for him to become a fully playable character for literally years at this point.
It's a simple explanation.

Because there's always going to be a character that has a sizeable fanbase that doesn't get in. People will argue how that character "should've gotten in" because these other characters also got in, but in reality they can only make so many characters and Smash doesn't function in a "longer requested = in" way. Besides aside from K. Rool, Ridley, and Banjo being "long requested" they also differ in multiple ways too. Ridley is still a active character in the metroid series, K. Rool can be brought back rather easily as DK isn't dead, and while Banjo is dead currently; he had a major executive vouching for his addition not to mention, I'm pretty sure he likely aided Steve's negotiations as well.

People always say _____ got in, so ______ will also get in because they're in similar circumstances. And while you can certainly use that line of reasoning to strengthen an argument FOR a character, you should still realize that no character "makes another super likely". For example, currently Sephiroth doesn't make Eggman super likely (but definitely could be considered a possibility, to some).

I know many people want Rex and Pyra for example, and many people think they're super likely because Min Min got into the game. But at the same time, a good chunk of these people also realize that Rex isn't "guaranteed", even if Min Min got in; because in the end the circumstances between ARMS and XC 2 are different. A ton of these people aren't going to be asking why Rex couldn't make it in, because the answer is pretty obvious. Not everyone can.

People were asking for Isaac, and used the fact that we got Ridley and K. Rool as proof that Isaac is next. Isaac didn't get in.
People were asking for Shadow, and used echo fighters as proof Shadow is next. Shadow didn't get in.
Bandana Dee, Shantae, Rayman, Lyn, Waluigi, were all big requests from Smash 4; but they didn't get in either.

Geno isn't in a special boat just because he has a decently big Smash fanbase and Sakurai likes him. IF Geno doesn't get in as a fighter, the reasoning for it would be pretty simple; there were simply other characters that Nintendo/Sakurai wanted to prioritize.

More the reason we need a Nintendo vs. Capcom ASAP.

Seriously Nintendo and Capcom? Why aren't you getting on this already?

At this point I think the Geno mii costume will almost certainly return and at best be upgraded. It's nigh-inevitable at this point as sad as it is to say since I too have been waiting for Geno for years and years.

If it doesn't return I do think something is absolutely up, some kind of new Square character post-Sephiroth, Be it in the same pass or even a Pass 3 (though we'll get there if and when we get there). If Geno's mii costume does not return I think he has a solid chance but we'll see. Still keeping my expectations low and will probably drop off the face of the earth once Geno's costume does indeed come back.

I think it's a matter of differing circumstances. Sakurai chose the base game's roster, and Ridley and K. Rool were easy to access by virtue of being A: Owned by Nintendo, and B: Not representing a new series and therefore not needing a new stage or an Assist Trophy or whatnot.
intendo chose the DLC, and I guess they just felt differently. Banjo's negotiations probably got mixed in with Steve's to some degree, so I suppose Nintendo thought they could cover both grounds. It should also be noted that Banjo is the only real fan-favorite in the DLC, while the base game largely consisted of ballot picks. I suppose the DLC just has different standards.

When you say you were "strung along" it certainly implies that you were expecting something to be given to you. You cannot be strung along if you expect nothing. Perhaps if you could explain how you think you were strung along, others could understand what exactly you are talking about.

I agree that there's no need for hostility, and just as you don't believe that anything you've said is emotionally driven, I too believe that nothing I've said is emotionally driven. To be fair, I agree with your assessment that he's not necessary 100% dead yet. If his costume were to end up absent on the 17th, things could turn out quite interesting. That said, if he does get costumed, it's reasonable to think that he'd a least get a nod towards his popularity.

The costume is the nod towards his popularity.

"Strung along" was referring more towards hope rather than expectation. I didn't expect Geno. I never felt like he was owed me or anyone else. But the desire was there and the hope hadn't been squashed yet. I was just looking for closure. Apologies if it came off as demanding.

I think Geno's true worst case scenario is thus:
  • Mii Gunner costume.
  • No visual upgrades.
  • No music tracks along with it.
  • Does not come with Sephiroth, but instead, someone unrelated further down the line.
It's not impossible, but I can't really see the costume not coming with the Sephiroth.

1 does not make a sample size, so Hero's showcase is not much grounds to go off of, but in 7 challenger packs now, only 1 has had Square costumes, that being Hero's showcase, while Konami, Capcom, SEGA, Namco and various other companies have tossed in their stuff wherever. The Chocobo hat is obviously returning with Sephiroth, so if Geno does not appear with him, then that would be more suspicious than anything.

I definitely don't think it's a likely scenario, just the worst one. I don't have a horse in the race and even I would feel terrible if this happened.

Like good lord, not only a good amount of very highly recognised IPs, but their character designs are top-notch, have a recognisable style and are incredibly varied, even with their much less-known IPs. It's no wonder people want just a Capcom All-Stars fighter.
Capcom pls bring back Asura's Wrath

Got it. That makes sense. I understand the desire to know ASAP if your character is in or out. It's just the wording that I took to mean something else.

For what it's worth, I think it would be great if Sakurai could devote time to each costume and talk about that character. But I don't think him not doing that is a problem. It's a lot of time to ask someone to do invest into doing that sort of thing. Like N3ON N3ON said, getting a costume is the credit given to the character/fans.
