This gives us 8 true newcomers and 9 echo characters, for 17 new character total.

I highly believe in Black Shadow now. I'm seriously going to be pleased for another F-Zero character. Right after my most wanted Smash character EVER (K. Rool).

Right, first of all, putting it on record that I predicted all of K. Rool, Chrom, Simon, and Dark Samus correctly, the former two specifically in yesterday's Direct. (On the other hand, I also predicted Ashley... RIP.) Now that that not-so-subtle brag is out of the way, here are my revised predictions for the remaining newcomers in the base roster:

Unique Fighters:
Decidueye
Bandana Dee
Geno
Chorus Men

Basically my pre-Direct fighter predictions, minus K. Rool, Simon, and Ashley. If you care to see reasonings for any of these, the link to my original roster predictions is in my signature. As for other acknowledgements, Skull Kid could happen if Heroes vs. Villains actually turns out to be a thing and isn't just a motif for the sake of K. Rool's reveal, but not only do I think it's definitely the latter rather than the former, but I kind of doubt Skull Kid specifically is in considering the premiere idea for his Final Smash, bringing down the Moon, is an Assist Trophy. Incineroar could also take the Pokemon slot if Vergeben is to be believed, but f*ck it, I'm going with my gut on this one. Lord knows it worked for me with Chrom

Echo Fighters:

Dixie Kong

Dixie Kong was on my prediction roster already, meanwhile Shadow and Isabelle both dodging two separate AT purges is beyond suspicious, especially the latter considering Chef Kawasaki is functionally similar to her old AT. All three were also very likely "highly requested," which was good enough for Chrom, Dark Samus, and Daisy to get in. Black Shadow could happen in regards to Echoes, but I'm not super confident he had enough of a ballot presence to get in. Really depends what the threshold for "highly requested" is. Ken would also fit thematically as an Echo Fighter, being the "original" fighting game clone, but I doubt he was exactly "highly requested."

Personally, I think The Moon replaced Skull Kid as an AT, This could either mean he might be a character, or he was just not included (like Issac in Sm4sh). I'm predicting (hoping) he makes it in as a playable character, but so far everyone I have wanted either became an AT, or stayed as one.
As for a final smash. He could probably have a cut scene final smash where he would turn into Majora's Wrath.

Also. What would be the odds of a Pokemon rep being announced at a Pokemon Centered direct if they had one?

And he spawns food. That's close enough. Two ATs with that specific of a niche would be redundant, especially when one of them actually does damage. If you still don't agree with me, Animal Crossing getting an entirely new AT is indicative of something fishy as well.

So what are you guys's thoughts on Master Chief as a character? I don't think it would happen in a million years, and banjo is way more likely anyway. I'm just curious because I've heard a few people suggest him. And now that all of my top characters are in I need to find some new characters to root for lol.

I think there are gonna be some boss like Dracula and Rathalos that are gonna be used for the other mode. But on Sonic Bosses, outside of Metal, you could probably do something where Eggman is the only boss, but he have different machines he can use as the boss.

Well, I get Isabelle I guess, but the rest include two characters I actively don't want, and a bunch of characters I either mildly dislike or are middling/indifferent about. If Shadow replaced Octoling, this could easily be my worst fears for a newcomer list.
To be fair, everyone and their mother seems to want K. Rool, Ashley, Geno and either Elma or Rex so it'd probably appeal to a lot of people but I'd personally be ultimately disappointed with this selection.

I've never considered Skull Kid and Tetra, but I feel like both are very likely now. Among Zelda fans, I know they are popular Smash requests, likely because some people (myself not included) feel the series has too many Links and not enough different characters representing it. Seems like things Sakurai would have been aware of following Smash 4. Skull Kid would obviously be unique, while I see Tetra being chosen as a Toon Link echo with a different Final Smash. The current echoes focus on showcasing a different personality from their source, and Tetra absolutely has a personality different from Toon Link. Even if she's just another Link moveset-wise, I feel like her at least being a different character would please fans enough.

Shadow the Hedgehog the video game was pretty scarily bad.
Cringey 'edge' game elements added like firearms and riding motorbikes.
Broken ass abilities.
'Dark' rival stereotype that I can't stomach.
Fanbase is kind of annoying fawning over what a 'badass' he is.
Heralded in an era where Sonic clones pushed Tails and Knuckles out the series and replaced them with Shadow and to a lesser extent Silver.

Note I actually loved Shadow in Sonic Adventure 2, it's everything after that that ruined him for me. Should have died a hero at the end of the story.

Kirby's Cook Final Smash and Chef Kawasaki's thing are trapping opponents and items (I think? Not sure if Kawasaki does this, Kirby did though) into a boiling pot and sending opponents flying while spawning food for anyone nearby to pick up.

Isabelle directly throws fruit toward the player that summoned her that heals them automatically just by touching it. And enemies can intercept it.

Completely different concepts.
Kap'n is an interesting point, though.
However it isn't unheard of for 1st Party series to get more than one Assist, so keep that in mind.

Since this is a Nintendo game. It's celebrating Nintendo's history, and now video game legacy.
While I don't mind third parties, and I actually find them very interesting, I'd be upset seeing 3 Sonic characters, when we still have a lot more to drag from Nintendo's library of IP's.


That's the reason you play the mods. There you get Silver, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow and Metal Sonic. In an official Nintendo game, that would be a pain ... It's not "Sonic & Nintendo All-Star Fighting."

I am not saying I want 6 characters from a third party. I would be happy with just 3. I feel like smash has evolved past that and is a celebration of gaming. While I feel like there are some Nintendo characters I would love still like Waluigi and Paper Mario it would be cool to see more third party characters also.

It would just be cool in my opinion having the three hedgehogs in the game. Just a cool "gimmick" for the sonic franchise. Plus Silver does not (I believe) do spin dashes and homing attacks and relies on telekinesis to do damage. It could bring a cool unique move set then just being in a ball and another sword user. He could be interesting and offer up something unique to smash bros.

Then again Shadow, Tails, and Eggman are excellent choices and wish I could have them all but realistically people would be up set with that much.

Ideally I would love Sonic, Shadow (echo), Tails (semi-clone) and Silver. 3.5 characters with Eggman, Metal Sonic, Chaos, ect being stage bosses in a new stage.

With Knuckles being the AT.

But I know how some people feel about sonic so that much sonic content may annoy some people.

Rythmn heaven rep (particually karate Joel from that k rool reveal hint potentially)
And probably a second Nampo rep best guess heihachi with that whole heroes vs villains theme and sakurai probably crack it with the moveset

Echos
Isabelle (could be unique but more likey echo because of dark Samus)
Shadow
Ken
Dixie kong (Up B is DK's but with her hair and bubblegum instead of peanuts)

Possibles
Black knight - the costume theory and that "heroes vs villains" to get fire emblem in on this
Black shadow - F-zeros villian for the theme
Medusa - again theme palutena echo but it's darkness instead of light
Tails - another fan service thing and costume
Viridi - probably under considered another costume theory character (NO reset bomb forest doesn't kill her duck hunt can be on the same stage with another duck hunt dog)

As far as FPS go, Halo's impact is behind only Doom and Wolfenstein, but his series grew to be much larger than those 2 (though that have both since had successful reboots). He's also the one that's able to become more kid friendly of those options. His inclusion would be adding 'Mr FPS' to go alongside 'Mr JRPG', 'Mr Stealth', 'Mr Fighter' and 'Mr Platformer/Mr Video Game'. He has plenty of different moveset options from a wide variety of weapons (including melee options) and is such a massive icon. I personally think he's an awesome fit but Nintendo purists obviously aren't big on the possibility.

The issue with Doomguy is that a lot of his character and personality is derived from being brutal and gory.

Going to post some of my latest predictions since things are starting to calm down and new thoughts and theories are creeping in.

Unique Fighters (Very possible not we won't even get this many new fighters sicne Sakurai did say we won't get too many and we are at 4 unique fighters as of now, so for some DLC may be a possibility, Rayman and Excitebiker I could see being added for DLC if so)
Bandanna Dee
-majorly popular choice from a popular series that didn't receive a newcomer in the last game, very much like DK and Metroid
-likely received a lot of Ballot support

Skull Kid
-AT currently still MIA
-once again from a popular series with high demand for a new character
-one of the more popular choices as a newcomer for his series
-With Ridley, Dark Samus and King K Rool now in the game, Sakurai seems to have a bit of a focus on adding villains this time around compared to a focus on female fighters in the last game

Elma
-Unique Concept
-Xenoblade is a series with growing popularity in Smash and could easily gain a new character
-XCX was out long enough for her to be considered for the initial project plan
-very likely was considered for Smash WiiU's DLC
-Sakurai is a fan of the Xenoblade series
-Sakurai spoke of a rifle in a previous column that he used for reference in his project which many speculate to be used for Elma
-More interesting and popular choice compared to her counterpart Cross from the game

Excitebiker
-Classic Recognizable Retro Character
-Unorthodox fighting style that Sakurai would very likely find appealing
-was previously considered by Sakurai

Rayman
-Ubisoft X Nintendo
-Already has content in the last Smash game
-Has a decent amount of demand
-I'm sure Sakurai is aware of the ArtsyOmni leak, which really boosted support for Rayman

-despite 'competing' with KKR she's garnered very strong support as a fighter
-Chrom borrowed moves from other fighters other than his counterpart, Dixie could do the same, maybe borrowing DK's Up B instead of using Diddy's Jet packs

Ken (Ryu)
-Ken is the most famous clone character in all of gaming, nuff said

-Was considered for Melee but cut since Rare was sold
-Duck Hunt was very much based off of B&K which shows that Sakurai does want them in the game
-Seeing Ridley and KKR, as well as some fighters who missed out on previous entires shows me that he's trying to tie up loose ends so to speak which could mean he may want to try to get this duo into the game officially
-Phil Spencer has stated several times he's cool with B&K getting added into Smash

Completely impossible, I just don't see it happening.

But if it did I think would probably blow more ***** away than if Sora or Banjo were revealed. I for one would love to see what would essentially be Mr.FPS standing alongside Mr.JRPG and Mr.Fighting Game.

Unfortunately some characters just aren't seen as likely even when they are contenders. Lloyd is pretty much the Tales rep for Sakurai. Doesn't necessarily mean he'll get in, of course. But that can apply to most characters anyway.

EVERYONE IS HERE!!! LOL it appears Sakurai is going all out for this one. He has always been a great Director. I am afraid this might be his farewell tour with Smash.
