It's kind of a horrifying concept in that killing members of the Koopa Troop actually makes them stronger than ever.
Like Bowser could be a legitimately terrifying villain what commands the legions of Hell if he wasn't so committed to being such a ham and going to tennis tournaments with his sworn enemies.
You know how when legends are passed down between generations, the details become altered and the legend essentially changes? That's my personal theory of the Mario universe. Bowser is actually a cunning, calculated, ruthless emperor waging war on the Mushroom Kingdom for imperialistic desires. Peach, the queen of the Mushroom Kingdom, is constantly kidnapped for leverage and a show of force to the king, Mario. The forces of Bowser's army are much more violent and barbaric than what we know them to be. However, with the passage of time, the legend of the War for the Mushroom Kingdom has been pacificed to the point where it's a common fairy tale for children. I don't know why I wrote all of this, it's complete nonsense lol.

I miss Trophies.

I dug collecting them. Spirits are alright, but trophies hit different, being 3d and specifically made for Smash (even if many were ripped from elsewhere).

Honourable mentions to Smash Run and regular All-Star though.
I wouldn't miss trophies as much if the spirits came with descriptions and lists their debut game. The best we get is something like Super Mario series. Very specific. I love reading about other characters I'm unfamiliar with and the blurbs for trophies were often written really creatively.

Here's a fun idea:

You're adding a Boss Rush mode to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. All bosses that were in the series prior are there and accounted for, but Nintendo wants you to make it the gauntlet to end all gauntlets. Add 10 bosses to this list. They can be from any game series be it in smash or out. The series doesn't even have to warrant a character. The only requirement here is that you think they'd make a fun boss fight.

  • Master Hand & Crazy Hand/Master Core/Master Fortress (Super Smash Bros.)
  • Giga Bowser (Super Smash Bros.)
  • Petey Piranha (Super Mario)
  • Porky (Earthbound)
  • Rayquaza (Pokémon)
  • Galleom (Super Smash Bros.)
  • Ridley (Metroid)
  • Duon (Super Smash Bros.)
  • Meta Ridley (Metroid)
  • Tabuu (Super Smash Bros.)
  • Rathalos (Monster Hunter)
  • Dracula (Castlevania)
  • Ganon (The Legend of Zelda)
  • Marx (Kirby)
  • Galeem & Dharkon (Super Smash Bros.)

EDIT: Also before anyone tries to correct me, the logic I'm using is that while Bowser is a Super Mario character, his super form Giga Bowser is a Super Smash Bros. original, therefore, he's from the Super Smash Bros. series.
  1. Geese Howard (Fatal Fury)
  2. Titan Dweevil (Pikmin 2)
  3. Doctor Wily (Mega Man)
  4. Lord of Lightning (Super Mario Odyssey)
  5. Perfect Chaos (Sonic Adventure)
  6. Metal Gear REX (Metal Gear Solid)
  7. Mother Brain (Super Metroid)
  8. Raphael the Raven (Yoshi's Island)
  9. Dragonlord (Dragon Quest)
  10. Sinistar

I will say, spirits are quite nice though.
Am I the only one in here that uses spirits?
It is a bummer descriptions are gone, and .pngs aren't the same as 3D models, but I love the way you obtain them, the battles you fight, and the effects that spirits give.

Smash Run for the next game would be nice, but eh, let us see.

Here's my list!
  1. Stallord (Zelda)
  2. Titan Dweevil (Pikmin)
  3. Solaris (Sonic)
  4. Nightmare (Metroid)
  5. Behemoth (Final Fantasy)
  6. Weldar (Banjo-Kazooie)
  7. Eternatus (Pokemon)
  8. Iustitia (Bayonetta)
  9. Ghastly King (Donkey Kong)
  10. Fatalis (Monster Hunter)

okay i realized i terribly worded the question so here's the revised question:

What's a removed Smash Bros. feature that you miss the most?

my answer is, again, spectator mode gambling
Two words:
Subspace. Emissary.

what was the worst smash bros. mode/feature that was removed in future titles

for me personally, spectator mode is worthless without glorious gambling
I'm gonna one-up you and do one for each game:
Smash 64 - Character Bios: Not terrible, but very lackluster in the face of the vastly superior trophy model of giving players info on their fighters. It's not a bad mode, but still the weakest of the modes exclusive to Smash 64.

Melee - Lottery: Gambling for trophies is kinda fun, but getting dupes is incredibly frustrating. Plus, Brawl's coin launcher is a much more enjoyable way to get new generic trophies and the shop system from 3DS onwards is way more convenient.

Brawl - Chronicle: It was definitely a neat idea on paper, and the fact that Mickey Mouse and Kobe Bryant are officially mentioned in Smash thanks to it is hilarious, but it feels somewhat redundant when a list of every game published by Nintendo is relatively easy to find online for free. Granted, that wasn't necessarily the case in 2008, but in the year of our lord and saviour 2015+5 there's little reason to need a chronicle mode.

3DS - StreetSmash: Uhh... Thanks for the IPhone version of Smash Bros, I guess? I mean, it's fun for a little distraction, but it's such a strange addition that really doesn't add much to the Smash experience. Maybe if I lived in an area where you could actually get Streetpasses it would be a little more interesting, but I kinda doubt it.

Wii U - Smash Tour: Now, I like a lot of Smash for Wii U's weird modes that no one really remembers. Trophy Rush? Hell yeah. Master/Crazy Orders? Hell yeah. I honestly don't even mind Classic mode that much, even if the forced 8-player matches are a mess and Master Fortress is a huge pain. However, Smash Tour really disappoints me. There's a lot of good ideas in that mode, such as augmenting the player's stats, equipping trophies for added benefits that would represent each character, and letting the player control a new character each stock in the final fight. However, this whole thing is bogged down by that terrible board where it feels like you get two seconds to make your decisions, there's a million things going on at once, and turning onto different paths is a crapshoot. There's no point in trying to pursue deep strategy, just b-line it for as many fighters as possible and hope you can get there in one piece. Thank god that most of what made the mode interesting was revisited and expanded in Ultimate without the board.

Oooh, that's a fun idea! Instead of giving you a list, I wanna showcase one boss in particular that I think would be a ton of fun to fight against in Smash. The Computer Virus from Kirby!

computervirus.PNG

You start off fighting the Magician, while the text bar narrates your moves as well as the opponents moves. The text bar also states how much damage you've given to the opponent, and vice versa; ex: The Magician takes 72 damage!

Once the Magician is defeated, you move onto the Evil Knight. And then finally, a Great Dragon.

Not only is the Computer Virus one of my favorite bosses from Kirby, I just think it'd be really cool to have an actual RPG-esque battle in Smash. For me at least, it'd just be a lot of fun as like a "halfway through bossrush mode boss" kinda deal. Nothing too serious, not too hard, but it can be difficult if you arent careful.

Smash Run. One of those modes that I wish came back and got expanded upon.

Seriously, I loved City Trial so much back on Air Ride. A large map that you are dropped on to go around gathering power-ups for a Final Showdown against the other players with the power-ups you gathered. It was practically a beginning start for the Battle Royale genre that involves dropping in a huge map to look for items to use against other players. And it'd be an awesome concept for a Battle Royale game. Like imagine a whole lot of players scavenging on a huge map gathering power-ups, items, etc for a set of Showdowns ala Fall Guys with the power-ups and items you gathered.

Hero fighting this boss would be the ultimate full circle to ever happen in Smash. I love this idea.

If you like new-style Paper Mario games, go try the Tingle games or Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru/For the Frog the Bell Tolls. Same sort of setpiece and story focus, where the gameplay is just a means to explore more story and progress. They're not bad games either - I own a copy of Kaeru no Tame and cherish it. Part of why they're good, I think, is that they're not branded as other series. If Kaeru no Tame was called a Zelda game it'd be worse for it (it even runs on the Link's Awakening engine, or rather Link's Awakening was built on it's engine). Imagine a Zelda game with no combat and whenever you run into an enemy, combat happens automatically and you either win or lose based on your equipment and max health. Same as if they tried to pass off the Tingle games as mainline Zelda... where you pay characters to do all the fighting for you... They work great as their own things.

That's what Paper Mario does wrong. Brand association. Paper Mario used to mean "Mario RPG game", then it meant "Mario game with some RPG elements", and now it's "Adventure game with Mario and pointless battles". Now there's no Mario RPG series -at all-.

On that note, Prince Sable for Smash. Or at least a music track... Turn his assist model into a costume? A remake on the Link's Awakening Switch engine?
Mad props for bringing up that wonderful game to people's attention. The gameplay's good, though the difficulty lies moreso in exploration and strategizing about what to do that in any kind of combat. And it's got hilarious dialogue and plot, like this is some Earthbound type stuff. I really recommend anyone who likes those kinds of hilarious games to give it a shot. And yeah, Sable for Smash pls.

It's funny how the comparison with Origami King came up, wasn't FtFtBT also an Intelligent Systems game? If so, they could really learn from their past achievements.

Most of the answers that have been said like Trophies, Subspace Emissary, good All-Star, both versions of Target Test, Boss Battles, and Smash Run, I wholeheartedly agree with.

However, my answer, my dirty secret, my guilty pleasure, the mode where I might legit have spent the most time?

Coin Launcher. I need it back so bad

After much thinking, here's my list:
  • Magolor & Magolor Soul (Kirby)
    • Near the end, Magolor Soul puts up an impenetrable shield The only way to beat this is to grab the Smash Ball, and unleash your Final Smash on him 5 times. Any cutscene Final Smashes won't play the cutscene until the final time.
  • Super Dimentio (Super Mario)
    • Screw Little Mac, the boss! There's a lot of jumping here, and a lot of dodging projectiles. I still think it'll be fun though!
  • Wily Teleport System (Mega Man)
    • You fight 8 of the series's most popular Robot Masters. Each one you defeat drops a gun that fires that Robot Master's Special Weapon.
  • Pyron (Darkstalkers)
    • I'm picking Pyron over Jedda because Jedda looks too much like a normal fighter and I don't want to look at the Majigen in HD...Or at all really. He's the one of the only bosses you can actually grab.
  • The Shake King (Wario)
    • The only other boss you can actually grab. Throws do extra damage against this guy, but you can only do it after stunning him.
  • Giovanni (Pokémon)
    • He battles you with his original team from the Rocket Hideout: Onix, Rhyhorn, and Kangaskhan. He will switch them out, use items, and even have them team up on you as the battle goes on.
  • Dr. Eggman (Sonic the Hedgehog)
    • I don't have too much of an idea for this one. I'd imagine it'd be a collection of various boss ideas he's had over the years.
  • Balthazar (Guild Wars)
    • In true Guild Wars 2 fassion the god of war battles you with AoEs, and lots of them. He'll set fire to the floor, hit you with whirling greatsword attacks, and just generally be a stage control monster. Aurene & Kralketorrik should at least make a cameo here.
  • Koloktos (The Legend of Zelda)
    • The first phase isn't too much to write home about, but the second phase has you breaking off the boss's arms and cutting it open with its swords.
  • The Enchantress (Shovel Knight)
    • In the first phase, the ground is uncertain, as attacks from both you and The Enchantress can destroy it. The second phase is where things can get a bit nuts, but Sheild Knight is here to help. Little Mac is going to need it.

I would enjoying throwing Shake King into walls and the ceiling.

(Would be a bit sad about Shake King not being a fighter, but happy for Wario Land having some representation.)

Too many of you are picking normal human-sized enemies as bosses. Bosses should be characters that are too big, or too immobile to be playable.

Quit picking Geese or Eggman(unless he's driving a giant machine) or whatever!

Oh, trust me, an SNK boss is more of a threat that any giant creature could ever be.

Have any Smash characters ever been released AFTER Switch maintenance?

I've checked a couple that I thought for sure would have been, but so far, they all line up with the Maintenance happening the day of their releases or slightly before, but never after the Maintenance.

I feel like, unless there just is a "BOOM, HERE'S CP7" on Monday with 0 fanfare, tomorrow's the last chance for this whole month.

Yeah, I know they're tough, that's not the point.

If Geese or Rugal show up in Smash, it should be as playable characters, not bosses.
But that's half the fun sometimes. Sometimes the boss isn't this giant creature who could obviously crush you like a bug with very little effort, sometimes it's just a dude on the same playing field as you, and then he beats the **** out of you like a real man.

Not in Smash it isn't.

That's why Marx is the Kirby boss instead of Dedede.

Or if they're both, like Ganondorf/Ganon or Sephiroth/Safer-Sephiroth, I'm cool with them being both.

But Geese ain't got no monstrous final form. If they're going to spend all the time and money to create a full moveset for a human sized character, there's no reason not to make them playable.

This is why I specifically didn't pick a Street Fighter boss. I initially considered Gill, but aside from his supers (one of which is way too similar to Tabuu's Off Waves), he's just a normal character. I went with Pyron instead since while he probably wouldn't be much bigger than the heavies, his attacks would be something you'd expect from a boss character in Super Smash Bros. That and Pyron isn't exactly a realistic choice or one people would even want as a fighter.

Honestly, I'm not prepared to write off this month until the bitter end. The Amiibo Theory just makes too much sense to me.

But believing in theories has never worked out for anyone in this community so who knows if my belief actually means anything.

Honestly, I'm not prepared to write off this month until the bitter end. The Amiibo Theory just makes too much sense to me.

But believing in theories has never worked out for anyone in this community so who knows if my belief actually means anything.
I too agree that the Amiibo theory makes a lot of sense, it's the perfect marketing strategy. Release Amiibo in the same month that a Smash character comes out, that way it's a 2-pronged attack of "Remember Smash/Amiibo"?

But as been pointed out before, we don't need a patch this month. The patch that added Mini Battlefield already put the data in the game for Joker and Hero's amiibo, meaning the only reason we'd get a patch is a new character.

Theory time.

Next week. We get a Smash reveal.

Week after, we get a partner direct.

Thoughts?
Sounds like a decent timeline. I could see it.

If we get another partner showcase at the end of this month I'll officially start expecting them every month. 2 times in a row is interesting, but I feel like once we hit 3 in a row, that's when we've established a pattern.

This seems relatively likely but this year has thrown too many curve balls at everyone so i'm not committing but I want this to happen

EDIT: Next Week Mario All-stars comes out so it is now less likely in my mind

It still think a late September reveal is possible, but it's starting to seem like these characters will take longer to make than the ones in the first pass. Most likely because Sakurai has a smaller team.

I mean, unless they're planning on extending the final date, we're still gonna get 1 every 3 months next year, they kinda have to unless they finally come out and say they're delaying them, which they have yet to do.

ImranNate, who seemingly has some VERY good sources, says this is the last character of the year.

I wasn't aware Imran had commented on the current situation.

Yeah, my bad, it was Nate.

....Jeez I need a break, this is the 2nd time in a week names of leakers get mixed up. :drshrug:
I wasn't calling you out for getting the names mixed up, I just legit thought I missed something Imran had said.

For what it's worth, I haven't seen the comment from Nate you're talking about either.
