That's his point, he's arguing that we SHOULDN'T deny communities arbitrarily deemed as toxic by a few individuals or whatnot

Robocop was already revealed quite a while ago as already mentioned

Kid.

Fiction INFLUENCES reality. I already said it would simply be incredibly unfortunate but you're acting like fiction has no influence when people started thinking the police were too soft and needed to be harsher shortly after Dirty Harry came out in theaters. I'm not even saying it should be canned and replaced or anything, so I don't understand why you're so worked up about "Doing something can be controversial at times"
Except that isn’t whats happening here. You are literally saying that a cartoonish robot that happens to be a cop being playable in a party game would “reflect very poorly on Nintendo”, even though a vast majority wouldn’t care less about this.

Don't forget also the "omg whoever thought it would be anyone other than Spring Man was just being an idiot with blinders on!"
Or in the alternate reality where he's not picked (which may or may not be this one): "omg whoever thought it would be Spring Man was just being an idiot with blinders on! You know Assist Trophies can't be promoted, and they wouldn't do a guessing game if they were just going to add the mascot."

Polls are interesting to look at, but they really shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Honestly, I doubt any DLC character besides Banjo came close to being in the top 10 of most polls taken before Joker was revealed. I might even go as far as to say that they probably didn't make the top 25 in most cases.

I remember Terry being #100 in the last poll SourceGaming did.

I'm saying that when all eyes are on the police due to brutality worldwide, Nintendo going "Look at our cool cop!" Would be controversial. This is a fact

They shouldn't be taken seriously in what sense? Isn't the idea to find out who people want?

Nine of my top ten most wanted made it onto that poll, with my top three most wanted making it into the poll's top five; not sure if that means that a lot of people share my taste in characters, or if it means that I have a tendency to jump on bandwagons.

EDIT: For reference:
-Geno: 2
-Doomguy: 3
-Dante: 5
-Rayman: 6
-Bandanna Waddle Dee: 9
-Travis Touchdown: 14
-2B: 17
-Heihachi: 39
-Elma: 44

The only one who didn't make the list was Impa, who got 54th.

I think anybody saying Spring Man is “obvious” in the sense that he’s the “protagonist/mascot” would be ignoring the fact that ARMS is young, with popular characters that AREN’T Spring Man. I think it’s foolish to discard him just because he’s an AT, but I would like to think nobody would say he was “obvious”. I myself think it’s Spring Man, but I wouldn’t say it’s a 100% sure thing.

As far as the poll goes, I hope people finally see that Dante isn’t some weird character that nobody actually wants. He’s legitimately popular pick. I must admit I’m surprised to see 2B placing so highly as well.

I’m also not trying to poke a bear or something, but I find it interesting that the Top 50 contains only 9 1st party picks, which is essentially the usual 1st party suspects. While that shows those 9 picks are popular, it shows an overwhelming preference among these fans for non-Nintendo characters, clocking in at 82% of the Top 50 selections.

Though, what’s interesting is that the picks from FP1 were hardly scratching the Top 100 lists. I believe I was told Banjo reached 59, and was the highest of that pack. So it more or less also shows that popularity, while not a negative for any character, isn’t this be all end all statistic that guarantees a spot in Smash.

After all, Spring Man and other ARMS characters hardly placed well here and this was prior to the announcement. However, that could be taken as bad news for upgrades- even if Spring Man is upgraded, it’s clear he wasn’t upgraded due to demand, which is what fans are hoping for with Waluigi or Bandanna Waddle Dee or Isaac.

Interesting poll all around. It’ll be fun to see which characters here end up in Vol 2!

Results aren't quite what I expected from a pre-ARMS poll. Here's the full list of results for anyone that's interested.
To whomever voted for Lu Bu, Zhao Yun, and Yukimura, I applaud you.

The top 50 were pretty much what I expected: a handful of well known characters around the Smash scene getting higher votes than 1 another, but the 2 most surprising things to me were Sol making the list and nobody from ARMS being on it (they didn't even reach the top 100 for that matter).

On that note, last year's top 50 poll didn't include Terry or Byleth, and they ended up being in Vol 1. There are no real signs to take from this and last year's poll, but I'm going to guess we'll be seeing 3 characters in Vol 2 who aren't on the top 100 including whoever the ARMS character is.

Sol Badguy hitting the top 50 on that poll made me smile given I am a big Guilty Gear fan and I am glad people are seeing him as a possibility.

The biggest shocker was Reimus huge jump from last year, even beating out some commonly discussed choices like Waluigi. I expected her to be in the top 50 but I didn't expect her to just barely miss the top ten. I am happy there and this is proof that any character, with enough eyes opening and rallying can get support.

Could you elaborate on that? I don't see how believing the mascot is obvious despite the recency of the series isn't justified, especially when Spring Man was a popular character during base game speculation.

The top 20 makes the most sense to me, and they are the most talked about and requested characters. I would not be surprised if they rounded out the remaining DLC characters. Anything after that, and things begin to fall off the rails. Rillaboom over Toxtricity? No thanks. Spyro 21st? I know he’s popular, but I’ve seen characters on that list in lower positions get talked about and requested way more often.

The top 10 for the Pokemon results in the poll go as follows

1. Rillaboom - 79
2. Cinderace - 55
3. Toxtricity - 49
4. Gen 8 Pokemon - 45
5. Sceptile - 38
6. Grovyle - 28
7. Decidueye - 20
8. Urshifu - 18
9. Inteleon - 14
10. Gen 8 Trainer - 10

Other points of note:

Zacian missed out on the top 10 and ties with Meowth and Gardevoir at 9 votes
Sirfetch'd got 8
Blaziken at 7
Zamazenta didn't get any individual votes, only when paired with Zacian did it appear
Shout outs to Ball Guy getting a vote

Yeah I'm pretty surprised myself. Even though Lloyd is my most wanted character, I did not think that he would get almost double the votes of Heihachi, who is a much more known character and is currently seen as more likely. I'm pleasantly surprised by that result. It is also good to see that pretty much all the usual suspects when talking about Bandai Namco reps (except Soul Caliber and Darks souls RIP) were firmly in the top 50. Here's hoping one of them get in this pass. Also, I was quiet surprised how well Reimu, Arle and The Knight did all things considered.

Keep in mind these are from all Smash fans that know of Source Gaming and not just the people here on SmashBoards. The results may not line up with what you see here.

  • Odd that Rillaboom's the most popular. Silly trinity quota or no I didn't think people would want it that much, as I perceive it to be by far the least popular of the three starters like Primarina, Delphox, and Emboar before it.
  • Cinderace and Toxtricity's placings don't surprise me either. Cinderace is the most popular of the three and Toxtricity seems to be the most popular Galar Pokémon sans maybe Dragapult, but it's not even on this list.
  • It's funny that both Sceptile and Grovyle made the list due to popularity for the former, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon for the latter. It's worth noting that even if they got votes for the trinity quota, it's still people genuinely wanting these Pokémon, as they're not likely picks in the slightest.
    • This also goes for Decidueye.
  • I think it's worth noting that Zacian & Zamazenta is the "correct" way of writing the duo similarly to how nobody would say Luigi & Mario or Kazooie & Banjo. Zacian is still more popular, but there may be occurrences where voters liked Zamazenta more, but wanted both.

"Zacian & Zamazenta" might have been counted as a vote for only Zacian, per the tabulating rules for alts. I doubt it, though.

Steve and Geno in top 7 makes me happy.

Glad I’m not the only person who voted for Gengar, even if he only has 6 votes.

Porky’s ranking is also nice. Skull Kid’s and Midna’s are decent, too.

My thoughts on why Sol's popularity increased considerably (besides fan enthusiasm):

1. Tekken being a 3D fighter. Sakurai confirmed Heihachi was briefly considered during Smash 4 but a moveset was difficult to create. It's possible Soul Calibur may run into the same issue. Between Ryu, Ken and Terry Sakurai doesn't have an issue with creating movesets for 2D fighting game characters utilizing both motion and charge command inputs.

2. Mortal Kombat's issues in Japan due to its excessive violence.

With Terry becoming playable, Tekken's status up in the air and MK not really having a base in Japan Guilty Gear ended up being the next man up. For fans seeing Ryu, Terry, and Sol all playable within the same game (a 1st I believe) is a dream scenario if you haven't played MUGEN lol.

The River City spirits being a thing also contributed to this. Arc System Works making a bunch of hits and expanding their fighting library lately is also a big factor as well.

Heihachi is more iconic than Sol, yes but Heihachi would be difficult to implement. It's possible to make Heihachi work in Smash but Sol badguy would be easier while bringing some uniqueness to the table.

For what it's worth Dragapult got 3 votes alongside several other Pokemon characters like Cynthia, Corviknight, Gallade, Grimmsnarl and Garchomp among others. It's just that there's over a hundred Pokemon results and I'm not dissecting all of that lol

My most wanted characters ranked by Source Gaming:

Travis Touchdown: 14th (395 votes)
Axel Stone: 192nd (13 votes)
Crono: 48th (95 votes)
Klonoa: 45th (109 votes)
Crash Bandicoot: 1st (1190 votes)
Sgt. Cortez: 438th (3 votes)

Honestly can't believe Klonoa is more popular than Crono in this poll.

Not sure what poll you are referring to, but Banjo was number one in the Source Gaming poll done around this time for the first fighter’s pass

Feels good.

What are people feelin' Mii Costume wise?

I'm thinkin' Hollow Knight.
I'm thinkin' we're in for yet another grab bag of costumes. I think it's possible that one of the costumes will be related to ARMS, but I'm not holding my breath. I think it's very likely we'll be seeing the two Monster Hunter costumes coming back, since it seems to be a running trend that each fighter brings back 2 third party Mii Costumes from Smash 4, and it seems kind of unlikely we'll be seeing the SquareEnix or Namco costumes due to some... very suspect omissions. As for the "Deluxe" Costume, I'm in agreement that The Knight seems like a hood fit. Personally I'd love to see a costume for Madeline from Celeste.

To sum up, my predictions for this upcoming Mii Costume wave is as follows:
  1. An ARMS costume or a random third party costume
  2. A Nintendo-related costume or a random third party costume
  3. Hunter Mail, returning from Smash 4
  4. Rathalos Armor, returning from Smash 4
  5. Another "Deluxe" Costume like Sans or Cuphead

wait what the **** someone voted for bernie sanders
HE CAN STILL WIN! MATCH MY DONATION, BRO! :ultpacman:

*Spring Man gets revealed.

"Yeah, it's pretty obvious that Spring Man was an exception. I don't think we'll see another AT get upgraded ever again."
I expect no shortage of this post ARMS Presentation. When will they learn?
