I think missing Nintendo first party characters are:

Bandana Dee
Dixie Kong
Waluigi
Captain Toad
Isaac
Impa
Andy
Karate Joe

There are others like Elma, but I think the afore mentioned should be addressed first

Is it crazy to think Nintendo would want at least one new franchise of their own to add tho, instead of it just being Splatoon for Ultimate? Again, not the most easy option compared to all 3rd parties, but they're getting ****ed in their own game here!

I reeeeeeally have to wonder if "one of the Dead or Alive chicks" would be a surefire pick for DLC, even as one of the traditional fighter characters??

Also, I'd honestly be down for a less intensive clone/no new franchises pass for the same reason as why Echo fighters were a good idea. Imagine getting Tails as a semiclone of Sonic, maybe Dixie Kong too.
I'm not saying Kasumi's surefire for DLC she's on my shortlist for it since 3rd parties tend to be (not always) from one of or THE biggest franchise from a 3rd party company and DOA is IIRC Koei Tecmo's 3rd biggest franchise after Warriors and Ninja Gaiden. She's someone to consider.

I focused on the characters based on additional possible clues:

Franchises not previously represented in Smash. So far all 3 characters revealed for the Fighter Pass are brand new franchises to Smash. If this (and the 3rd party hypothesis) hold up that eliminates new characters from:

Metal Gear
Sonic
Mega Man
Pac Man
Street Fighter
Final Fantasy
Bayonetta
Castlevania
Persona
Dragon Quest
Banjo Kazooie

3rd Party Representation (Part 1). So far Atlus, Square Enix, and Microsoft are all present in the Fighter Pass. I could be wrong but it might be safe to theorize that they'll only have one rep in the Fighter Pass. So cross out new characters from Atlus, Square Enix, and Microsoft.

3rd Party Representation (Part 2). Based on Hero, it's possible for a 3rd party company to have a character in the base game (Cloud) and as DLC (Hero). This boosts the chances of the following companies to get an additional character:

Konami
Sega
Capcom
Namco

As always this is only speculation. Watch Sakurai make the last 2 characters 1st party lol.

I'm just going to put this list out here.

Pac-Man
Dragon Quest
Castlevania
Metal Gear
Street Fighter
Megami Tensei (Persona)
Mega Man
Final Fantasy
Ninja Gaiden
Sonic the Hedgehog
Mortal Kombat
DOOM
Tekken
Chrono
Tales
Resident Evil
Crash Bandicoot
Tomb Raider
Half-Life
Devil May Cry
Halo
Kingdom Hearts
Ratchet & Clank
God of War
Bayonetta

Can you imagine a day where all of these franchises have characters in Smash?
(Note: I didn't mention franchises with character creation, franchises that didn't exist before the 7th gen (besides Bayonetta), or franchises already in the game in some form besides characters)

You talk about Rare's significance but forget one of its most significant characters...

Not like we'd get her as DLC anyway.
I know, I too wish we could get Krystal.

I couldn't decide which GIF to use so I decided to go with their theme.

Seriously though, both Star Fox and DK have their main Hero, Sidekick, and Villain. They both need their main Heroine to complete their quartet for perfect representation.

Never gonna happen, but I would lose my **** way more than I did for literally any other character ever revealed in Smash.
Even Knack would be hype for me.
no, not really, but you get my point.
Of course, I don't think God of War or Ratchet & Clank are likely in the slightest, but man it would be amazing to see them in.

I don't know, but usually when a company says that they want someone in Smash, then that typically means that the relevant character is not in because such a comment would breach their NDA.
Hmm...I can see this as a 50/50. Not that it's bad or anything, but people are good with trolling others to think it's not gonna happen.....then BOOM! we get someone.

I'll take it with a grain of salt because I'm not believing anything anymore with Smash DLC until I see for myself.

Personally if we get another Nintendo rep, whether in this pass, a future pass, or future game. I hope we will eventually get an Advance Wars rep.

Its really shocking how much that series has been neglected by Nintendo, given its popularity back in the day. And with a Advance Wars fighter in Smash, hopefully Nintendo will revive the series. For now though, that remains a pipe dream.

Especially with how much love Fire Emblem has gotten, it's kind of bizarre to see two sister series that released together in their early days (Wars is part of the reason FE was brought to the West) with similar timelines, (both starting out as Japanese only Famicom strategy RPGs by Intelligent Systems that were localized on the GBA) but with one getting 7 characters and the other getting 0 (as well as getting their only Assist Trophy cut).

I think at this point they should just bring Andy, Sami, and Max together as part of a Pokemon Trainer trio.

Ura is that you?

Jokes aside I've been craving more AW and it's such a shame IS is now a Fire Emblem machine.

It is super weird how Advanced Wars, half of the AW/FE series, is more or less completely forgotten.
I know the latest game's sales weren't great (if the "latest game" means came out in like 2005) and Nintendo has had a history of killing off series based on the failure of a single game (RIP Chibi Robo tho), but that still really isn't a solid explanation.
It's like the series just faded out of existance.

On the topic of a GBA character being in Ultimate, Advance Wars is the way to go for sure (aside from Golden Sun but that's not happening).

Sure there's :ultroy::ultzss::ultlucas:but like Roy's debut was technically Melee and people associate ZSS more so with the secret endings of Metroid games. Lucas maybe but he was planned to be an N64 character and his game hasn't been released worldwide.

Andy, IMO is the perfect representative for the GBA-era. Given how critically acclaimed and beloved Advance Wars is on the GBA. Even if it made it's debut on the Famicom, people will always remember the 2001 entry as being one of the GOAT's.

You speak directly to my heart man. As one Advance Wars fanatic to another, I salute you good sir!

Also made a theory about Andy being in the Fighter's Pass (posted here a few pages ago). Here's hoping this franchise gets the love it deserves.

I love how every AW fan is perceived as an alt of me lmao!

IS has some dumb philosophy for why they can't make a new one but hopefully something changed since 2017. Maybe Wargroove was the wake up call for them to pluck their heads out of their collective asses.

They haven’t made a new Advanced Wars since they have yet to figure out a way to fit waifus in it.

“The problem, though, is how it could assimilate one of Fire Emblem's most popular features - the relationship-building that takes place on the battlefield.”

The quote was more "relationships between characters". Which I figured could be remedied if CO's had relationship mechanics and whatnot while keeping the AW core gameplay intact. And character relationships could extend to strategic alliances being made between nations and character's gaining allies with others.

Either way, I believe Wargroove's success is what's going to bring the series back (provided a new title isn't in the works already).

I'm not really sure how and why you would incorporate relationship building in Advance Wars, it doesn't fit the tone or gameplay style of the game. With Fire Emblem you have singular units that evolve over time and improve relationships with other units since they fight alongside each other on the battlefield. On the other hand, we have Advance Wars which is a tactical war simulator that has commanders pumping out disposable generic units that you won't see again. I know Fire Emblem has been successful lately but you can't replicate the same success on another series that has different mechanics and style. Relationship building can't be forced on another strategic game just because it was successful in another series.

I explained above how it could work to a certain extent. Days of Ruin was the first step in that regard but the series can continue to implement those features while staying Advance Wars.

But like...IS needs to realize the appeal of the series beyond that. Like it's multiplayer focus and potential for competitive play. Things that AW does best and what makes it so beloved. Wargroove did just fine without that kinda of stuff and it's not even published by Nintendo. Imagine what could be done if Nintendo marketed the series along with the features I mentioned above.

I am new here, and I'm...just trying to get this out as much as possible. If this is the wrong place to put this, by all means tell me, and I'll move it to a new thread. Although I can't say I've played Smash, ever since Ultimate was announced my interest for it started to come up, due to its amount creative cast of characters. I adore crossover games. The two that I've adored the most is Kingdom Hearts, and now Smash. I've also seen Smash Ultimate plays in my school that fueled the fire and made me gain interest in the different games the characters in Smash originated from. Though I can't PHYSICALLY play the game, I always support it and welcome the different ideas of characters. (Smash also fueled my interest for a story as well.) That being said, I've been constantly thinking up ideas of games from different franchises, Bandai Namco, Sega, Nintendo Games, and the games I'm familiar with HAVE been enlisted as ideal Smash characters.

However...there is one idea that I had that...I haven't seen. It's a game that just got remastered on the ps4 & coming to the Nintendo Switch, got a movie coming in and (I think) a manga. And on the possibility that we get a Level-5 rep, aside from Professor Layton, this would DEFINITELY be my top want for Smash.

And though IF A Level-5 rep comes into Smash (be it in the final 2 DLC or the BOLD assumption that a Smash 6 is possible) then odds are it'll go to Professor Layton. Still, I'd honestly want Oliver as a rep. He's more...ehhh versatile than Layton if that means anything. Oliver would be a full-on Wizard compared to Robin. And his playstyle would work similar to that of Pokemon Trainer's, switching out himself and his top Familiar, Mitey.

This talk of possibilities of Indie reps kinda make me believe that Level-5 won't have a chance...but here's hoping. What do you think?

Lucas maybe but he was planned to be an N64 character and his game hasn't been released worldwide.
Lucas is still a GBA character. The N64 Mother 3 was scrapped in the late 90s/early 2000s and it didn't get its GBA release until 2006 though I don't think the timing really matters.

Yeah I dig but I feel someone like Andy or Isaac would be a much better representative for that GBA era. Having been there right at the start and having a worldwide release.

I don’t think it would fit the series either, that’s just the justification IS gave us sadly.

Still they said they were interested in making a new AW game, I just hope they realize what the series has unique instead of trying to shoehorn Fire Emblem mechanics into it.

I wouldn't call Level-5 an indie, so they have a better chance than those. But I think if they got a character it would definitely be Layton.

It's sort of like how Banjo is the first proper N64 character throughout the world, that always came from the N64 in every region (though technically, his game started out on the SNES, at that point Banjo wasn't a fixture of it, and the game Banjo made his literal debut in was always on the N64). The OoT Trio are all variants of characters came from the NES, Wolf was supposed to appear in a SNES game, and Villager made their worldwide debut on the GameCube.

...right?

Hello welcome to Smashboards!

I’m probably biased, but I do believe a Level-5 character is more likely than most people think. They’ve been a powerhouse for both the DS and 3DS over the years. Still I think Oliver would have a hard time getting in Smash over Layton or Yo-Kai Watch’s Jibayam, i just don’t know if he’s got the fan demand.

Ehh...well Sheik and Dorf are literally different characters and YLink is different from the other Links.

EDIT: I meant Sheik and Dorf are characters who are shown much later than their counterparts from Zelda 1/ALTTP. As is YLink.

With ZSS, she technically appears long before that in the NES/SNES titles and Roy literally debuted on a Gamecube game. Lucas is the only exception and even then, Andy or Isaac fit the build much better as GBA icons given how strongly both franchises are attached to that system.

Intelligent Systems run of games from 2000-2008 is pretty insane when you look back. Jumping between four major franchises and other little titles, and I think its fair to say Fire Emblem was the weakest out of Paper Mario, WarioWare and Advance Wars around then. But then Fire Emblem Awakening was a huge hit, and I guess Days of Ruin was supposed to be Advance Wars hail Mary that failed? So now they mostly make FA with lip service to WW and PM.

I think the big issue with IS at this point is they very much don't want to make the same game twice. So every new WarioWare has to have a central gimmick. Paper Mario too. But people fell in love with these franchises during the GBA and GC era when they were purest distillations

Many of us would be happy with just another Advance Wars title, but they can't figure out how to pivot the franchise to make it feel new. But unlike other Nintendo 1st party devs they haven't quite figured out how to innovate a title (like Odyssey and Breath of the Wild did) whilst maintaining the core of what people love about the franchise.

I think you are forgetting Sakurai began work on Ultimate shortly after Smash 4 was done. Basically he's been doing constant Smash work with a short break in between the two games. And it's not just Sakurai, the same Namco team is also involved. I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted a chance to finally work on something different.

I know we all want more more more. But my goodness, Ultimate has so much already. When will we be satisfied?
Bro, I never said I wanted another fighter pass. I was satisfied when Ridley (my most wanted) got added. I was simply making a prediction and am more than satisfied with the current roster.

As I said in another post, Sakurai seems like the type of guy to take a vacation and think about going back to work within the first 10 minutes. It just seems like that's how he's wired. He might want to work on something else, but who knows.

The only characters I want are Porky, Sylux and a Capcom rep that isn't Phoenix Wright, but if I get any of those, that's just more icing on an already very good cake.

Something with other Nintendo game DLC is not getting it when there's the possibility of a sequel, Mario's Odyssey, Breath of the Wild (confirmed) and even Smash Bros, as referred to in Sakurais book.

But with this being the ULTIMATE Smash Bros, with a list of characters and stages likely to never happen again, I'd really have to question if "wait until the next game" would be the best idea for at least another pass, where they could make it even more special to some extent at least. It's subjective, but you could truly reach some general level of "completeness" by finishing off the most notable fan requests, important but omitted characters or fitting third parties.

Go big or go home, as they say...

There probably isn't going to be another Smash game for a long time. It would be a good idea to make more DLC, considering how long Nintendo is promising to support the Switch.

As soon as I heard that Ridley was finally playable in Smash Bros, I was so happy I couldn't ask for anyone else as he was my most wanted character. Afterwards we got Simon, Dark Samus (which also made me happy), King K Rool, Joker, and #@%*ING BANJO & KAZOOIE!!! Sakurai is spoiling us with so many fan requests that it would feel wrong to ask for more.

super weird, but considering IS' questionable choices past few years, I'm not super suprised.
I'm certainly not the minority, and I don't want to play a tactical war game for the relationship building
Kinda a shame they really don't seem too fond of listening to fans

Yeah, this is kind of where I’m at too. I don’t even think a second Fighters Pass would necessarily have characters I’d like to see; even if it’s all first party, how do I know it’d have Dixie, Bandana Dee, etc. and not more directly promotional picks instead? And as others have said, I’m not crazy about dropping another 25 bucks to get the whole roster.

It just feels like eating too much chocolate cake in a row at a certain point. I’d like a break eventually.

"But they didn't get MY fan requesttttttttttttttttttttttttttt"

Having joked that, I'd personally perhaps be content if we just got the Fighter's Pass for DLC if I did happen to get one of my most wanted characters in it, though I respect that I am in no way entitled to getting them and that they would be a bit more on the niche side Embarrass Like it's totally no guarantee that we would get them and what not. There could be whatever reason of balancing or latency for a Rhythm-based moveset or what have you keeping a Rhythm Paradise character getting in still (despite consideration for Smash 4 but then weirdly not being in Ultimate still for whatever reason) and Crash would be a specific Western third party to shoot for. But I just think it'd be pretty cool to finally see RP get some Smash love with a character based around all the different iconic minigames of the franchise (like what KimmotMan KimmotMan on Twitter has drawn before). And after being seemingly impossible in Smash 4, Crash finally getting in after all this time amidst the destruction of previous factors against him (non-popularity and there being no Western-type characters in Smash) would just be so great.

Besides which may be the two remaining DLC fighters in the Fighters Pass, I'm also curious on what could the possible additional modes (if any) will come along with the upcoming fighters (especially the already confirmed Hero and Banjo-Kazooie).:surprised: Following the initial pitch of SSBU in its first formal reveal, ("Everyone is here!"), what if the same idea will hold true with game modes (or most of them at least)? With Hero, I could see something like an HD (or more fleshed out) Smash Run mode added within in a potential Ver. 4.0. A Subspace 2 emissary could be pushing it too far and, WoL already is the game's single player campaign. As for Banjo-Kazooie in a Ver. 5.0 could come along with either a "Break the Targets" mode (similar to the N64 one), or the triumphant return of "Board the Platforms"; honoring the platform genre of games. Other potential modes they could add with any of the remaining two characters could be a new FPS mode/mini-game (VR Mode could have been implemented to test out the first person perspective on the game), which would then be appropriate if the fighter packed into that version comes from a FPS type game. And maybe a puzzle type mini game could be the final mode (something like Tetris or Puyo-Puyo). What do ya'll think? :)

Also... I still can't believe it. :ultmario: :ultsonic: :ultmegaman: :ultsimon: :ultsnake: :ultryu: :ultcloud: :ultbanjokazooie: in one same game. :2gud:

Days of Ruin was anything but. If that were the case, IS would at least have the confidence to release the game in Japan which they didn't.

And speaking of which, DoR was actually the rebound point for Advance Wars. Coming off the commercial failure of Dual Strike, Days of Ruin really picked the series back up at gave it a new lease on life. Even if it didn't do nearly as well as Awakening. But like many Nintendo games around that time, crap marketing really took it's toll on the game.

My guess is Home Run Contest, Boss Rush, Break The Targets equivalent, and...

...drumroll...

Smash Tour.

But nah I dunno. I’m fairly certain Home Run Contest and Boss Rush are in the cards at least.
