Because they also need to fund other projects outside of Smash and the game can't get new stuff forever.
Nintendo has plenty of money in the reserve to do with as they wish, and it's not that unheard of for game that's been out for only half a year to get a 2nd round of DLC.

I mean yeah, but why stop there though if they know they can make more money?
You can keep saying after every DLC character, but they have to stop at somewhere. Some people are working on the same project for years now.

Both fans and developers will move on after a while.

Yes, but this game has barely been out for half a year, not years. And I'm saying there will be at least one more pass. Not more than that.

We ultimately don't know how much DLC they're going to do or what's on the cards, but Nintendo has left money on the table before. I'm not really counting on a second FP right now, especially with what Sakurai said about seasons passes and DLC business models.

I don't think we're getting DLC past the fighter's pass

Let Sakurai take a vacation and work on something else. Like F-Zero

I'm gonna be honest, I'm not sure I even want a second fighters pass, at least not right away. With how much Sakurai tends to overwork himself, him and his team deserve a much needed break from Smash. I can live with this being the last wave of DLC if it means the man doesn't have to work with an IV drip attached. Unless they can find a good team to succeed them for future DLC, I'd rather they put Smash to rest and work on other projects. Plus 80 characters seems like the perfect place to cap everything off and I'd feel kinda guilty about asking for more at that point

Even if a second pass doesn't occur I think we can all agree Ultimate is already as big as it is and satisfying given the picks like:ultbanjokazooie::ultkrool::ultridley::ultsimon::ultrichter:

We're not in any rush, the support for this game doesn't have to end a year or even 2 after its launch. While I don't think additional content is necessary for years to come (ala SFV/Tekken), I also wouldn't rule it out. Worse come to worst, they get a head start on whatever future content they decide to do for the series as a whole (BotW 2 as its own thing happened evidently from the original team having "too many ideas for DLC,"which sounds like the best kind of problem to a fan like me).

For now I want to focus on the stuff that has yet to release. And hope Sakurai does get that well-deserved break, if only for short while. I can't imagine the series without him, but I wouldn't object to another team being put in charge if they do opt for the "updated/DX edition" method, and just keep adding to Ultimate.

We all want Sakurai to take a break believe me but I'm very doubtful it'll happen. Man's an huge workaholic who enjoys his work. He already does enough for us I really hope he reconsiders.

Not particularly because of those characters (I wasn't supporting any of them and only really like Richter), but I'm pretty satisfied nonetheless.

I don't think I can ask for more characters after we cap the roster with over 80 characters.

It’s weird that people just treat a second Pass as a given. It flies in the face of how almost every Nintendo game handles first party DLC.

My opinion is they’re also not going to want to overwhelm it with DLC since a lot of kids play it and parents probably aren’t crazy about dropping 50+ bucks on DLC in addition to the game.

Nintendo haven't released a deluxe GOTY type version of a game on the same platform have they? Obviously things like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Pokken Tournament DX exist, but they took Wii U games and DLC to the Switch.

I don't think that's a business practice they're going to start any time soon, but it's one way they could alleviate the price slightly. (But who are we kidding, its Nintendo, those prices don't drop)

If it was solely about kids we wouldn't get Joker and Banjo.

16 DLC fighters is more than enough anyway. I think we may just see those slots filled and it’ll consist of picks that are sure to satisfy everyone.

I love seeing characters added as much as the next guy but basically having to buy the game a second time over is a bit much.

When did I say "solely?"

The thing with a lot of games with long DLC life cycles like Fighter Z is the base game is often undervalued and sold at lower prices, sometimes going on sale for 20 or even less not too long after being released for 60. Nintendo's first party games rarely go on sale and that is their brand value. That is where they make most of their money. Other games use DLC to make profit while potentially selling the game at a loss, but Nintendo doesn't.

One thing's for sure, though: the demand for a second pass is definitely already there.
The only question is if they'll decide to address it.

I imagine a skeleton crew could keep DLC going throughout the Switch's life to a continued profit, but at some point Nintendo won't see the investment as worthwhile and will be content allocating the resources elsewhere. In the past they've been known to cap DLC, not necessarily prematurely, but while there was definitely still money on the table to be had.

Given that, while another pass would certainly keep the revenue coming in, were Nintendo to curtail major additions to Ultimate once this pass wraps up, that wouldn't come as any sort of shock to me.

I think you are forgetting Sakurai began work on Ultimate shortly after Smash 4 was done. Basically he's been doing constant Smash work with a short break in between the two games. And it's not just Sakurai, the same Namco team is also involved. I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted a chance to finally work on something different.

I know we all want more more more. But my goodness, Ultimate has so much already. When will we be satisfied?

I got the thought in my head of a Triforce of Triforce users to potentially implement in Smash and needed to visualize it.

For the record, I would rather have someone like Skull Kid or Vaati before Demise.

With :ultbanjokazooie: in the game, the roster feels complete. I honestly don’t want much more at this point. Perhaps a second season to focus solely on some first party omissions, but many of them are already represented in one way or another. Rare was so significant to Nintendo in the 90s that now going forward, it doesn’t feel like any era of Nintendo is under represented.

If the last two fighters are Leon/Jill and Phoenix Wright then even the 2000s and the GameCube and DS respectively will feel fully touched upon.

The only place to go from there would be to focus more on “true” guest characters that represent video games outside of Nintendo like they’ve already touched upon with Snake, Cloud, and Joker.

You talk about Rare's significance but forget one of its most significant characters...

Not like we'd get her as DLC anyway.

She’d be hype, like a B Tier for me, but she’s also the third main character. :ultbanjokazooie: are main characters and kind of the mascots for Rare itself.

Like often, people are forgetting the Game Boy Advance. We are is still missing representative of games born on the golden era of the GBA, mainly Golden Sun, Advance Wars and Rhythm Heaven series.
I know Roy and Lucas are both characters from the GBA, but both their games were sequel of existing series.

That’s a good point. I think I mentioned something to that tune about a year ago when most were still hopeful for Isaac.

Phoenix Wright's games debuted on the GBA in Japan.

What we're really missing is DS characters. It's literally just :ultlucario:

Yeah, I honestly find Ultimate perfect the way it currently is.

Literally the only thing left for me to ask for is Crash, since everything else I was hoping for is already in (Every veteran who I wanted to see back, every past stage I wanted to see in, more Metroid content, most of the past music remixes back alongside awesome new ones, K.Rool, Castlevania, a new Pokémon rep for my friend from Madrid, Adventure Mode, Mii costumes I was hoping to see returning, a fun time with the Spirit Board, reps from recent games such as Joker or Inkling, Stage Builder, Dragon Quest content, Eight actually getting in and Banjo).

Crash would just feel as the cherry on the top of a perfectly made cake of my favourite flavour at this point. I wouldn’t be mad at all if he doesn’t get in the game, but I still can hope for him at the moment so I don’t have to give up yet.

Dixie is at least the last "classic" character I feel should be in (well, you could argue Toad, but I'm personally not invested in that). I think Bandana Dee should be in too but hopefully he'll get a chance next Smash... Sakurai's conservative approach to new Kirby material nonwithstanding.

I know, I too wish we could get Krystal.

If we got Crash and another Capcom Rep, Super Smash Bros should be renamed to Super Smash Bros vs Capcom vs PlayStation All-Stars

I'm bafflingly still surprise we didn't get Dixie tbh. Truly one of the last Nintendo all-stars with Bandana Dee and Toad.

I get it. The newcomer roster was tiny and they made some pretty damn smart choices on it: 3 classic legacy characters and 3 new characters from popular series, and the obligatory surprise character. And it seems unlikely she would work as an echo fighter in Sakurai's mind, so... not much you can do about that, especially if Nintendo mandated a third-party heavy DLC lineup. If the newcomer roster was as big as Brawl/4 I think she might have made it.

But then again you never know. Sakurai has shown Rareware a ton of love in this game, but it's hard to not feel like it only happened because K. Rool and Banjo were so popular on the ballot. I'd say Dixie's best bet going forward is going to be as a semi-clone where you can save time and resources while still making her pretty faithful.

The bigger problem I think is the future of the DK franchise is as of now uncertain, and Dixie along with it.
