Have had a long day for reasons some folks know, but I will just comment on “fan rules”.
On one hand, “fan rules” are restricting. They go out of their way to essentially boil down options that fit the outlook of said rules. Some of them are legitimately based on nothing.
On the other, some “fan rules” are mischaracterized and make sense in some aspects. Folks normally get upset or frustrated with them if they disagree with their outlook, as is most of Smash speculation. It’s kinda like, “That’s not true! It disconfirms my most wanted!”
I’ve become lax with my Smash outlook quite a bit. I really don’t caas much about some options because I will essentially enjoy them all anyway. That said, just because a “rule” is broken once does not mean that it will be repeatedly broken by additional picks. Simply put, as someone who didn’t expect Assist Trophy or Spirit Upgrades, I fully expect Spring Man to be upgraded as the ARMS pick. I also, however, do not expect further upgrades or some substantial amount of the pass to be upgrades.
As I have said in the past, what works for ARMS may not work for Xenoblade 2, it may not work for Isaac and Golden Sun. There are variables to every character selection, as none of them are created equal or in the same standing as the others. Therefore, to cast this “broken rule” as indicating a pattern with one data point, I could only deduce that folks will get their hopes up, and then crash and burn similar to the Grinch leak days. The fanbase doesn’t learn from this sort of stuff.
As I have said, we should be viewing prospective characters on a pick by pick basis, because thats seemingly how picks are chosen.
Fan rules will always exist in order to guide the course of speculation. Some will stand the test of time, others won’t. But not having “rules” doesn’t always lead to the most interesting speculation if you ask me.

Side note, I played and finished Ace Attorney 1. Love the characters and I am excited to play the next game after I finish RE3, but I am not sold on Phoenix in Smash. It has nothing to do with disliking the game, but simply am not sold on him being a playable character.
