Hero was even more of a promotional pick than Byleth, so it doesn't surprise me that much. SE really went out of their way to make sure Nintendo properly promoted DQXI. There was the special Spirit given away to people who played the demo and Sakurai himself attending that event that promoted DQXI. They even label Hero specifically as a DQXI character rather than give him an umbrella label that would apply to all four Heroes.

They kept mentioning Smash Bros any time Dragon Quest XI S is brought up. They did it in the PAX Panel and they did it during the September Nintendo Direct.

It's ridiculous how much people are in denial of Hero's inclusion was for promotional reason.

I mostly just kinda stopped caring which Pokemon they choose after Pokemon Trainer, Pichu and Incineroar ruined Smash 4's perfect lineup of covering as many Types as possible with no overlap.

But if I did still care, I'd probably go with:
Beedrill - Bug/Poison
Decidueye - Grass/Ghost
Garchomp - Dragon/Ground

And then:
Lycanroc - Rock
Beartic - Ice
unless a future gen adds a really cool Rock/Ice-type.

I don't think Nintendo and Sakurai had intended for it to be that way, but SE took charge and kinda forced it.

I can't find anything online that is quite complete. This community would be perfect for that. It could start with the characters we remember most and then gradually the post could grow. It would even be possible to vote and see statistics and rankings of preferences and popularity. We could also separate into characters for the game, skins, echo fighters, assist trophy, Mii Outfits and Hats, enemies, and game bosses.

I don’t really know how much Yoko being at this potential meeting matters, all things considered.

If I remember correctly, the DQ meeting was with producers and developers, not writers. Even then, when creating the moveset, would it be more pertinent to talk to the writer, or the devs who made the character?

2B may not be in Smash, and that’s fine. I just know that that’s an indication of anything. Yoko is like “the guy”, when it comes to NieR, but when it comes to finalizing the deal, would they need to meet right then and there? Or meet once development has begun on the character?

I feel there’s still more to it before calling 2B disconfirmed.

The fact that the Switch is actually getting more games the others did when it comes to multiplat kind of shows they are becoming a little more generalized again.

It's probably a mix of things; Hero as a whole was added for Dragon Quest's massive legacy and influence (that much should be blindingly obvious, and dismissing Hero as "just a promotional pick" seems silly if not outright ignorant), but some of the smaller details like Hero having Luminary as the default skin, having his series listed in promotional material as Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age: Definitive Edition rather than just Dragon Quest, and having a stage based purely on Dragon Quest XI seem to be for promotional reasons.

If anything, I think it's more ridiculous to think that Hero was added as a promotional fighter rather than a legacy character. Certainly, they pushed DQXI along Hero's inclusion, nothing bad if you ask me. Every character added to the game will indirectly promote their franchise to begin with, and if we keep in mind that Dragon Quest is ****ing big in Japan and has a lot of history with Nintendo platforms, I don't precisely think Square Enix forced Nintendo to anything. Of course, they were interested in promote DQXI through Smash, but I'm completely sure Nintendo was happy to do it for the reasons I've previously mentioned.

DQXI would be released on Switch even if Hero wasn't added to Smash, promoting the game during his inclusion in Smash is a natural move, specially if we remember the legacy and the massive presence of Dragon Quest in Japan.

It to celebrate how big it is in Japan and then have Sakurai lecture the Western audience for not really being into the Dragon Quest series. Meanwhile any third party series that's big in the western but not in Japan will be brushed off into being a Mii Costume or Spirit.
