Well, yeah, but that wasn't really my point, it's more about how sometimes people stretch the limit of a character to it's maximum, just so they can fit as a clone, when they are perfectly unique, it depends on the situation, but for exemple, the other character I quoted, Midna as a Zelda echo ... It's from the same series, but it's still pretty stupid since it doesn't fit either character at all
Well people just want the character without even think if them being an echo makes sense or not or if it's even worth that in the first place some characters are worth echo treatment some are better as costumes

In terms of female characters, I would really like to have Lara Croft. She is iconic and I think she is underrated in the speculation scene. I would also be pretty excited for Jill Valentine and Arle Nadja. Tracer and Reimu would also be cool. Unfortunately there ain't a lot of female characters that I would be hyped about. Kos-Mos, 2B, Dixie Kong, and Elma wouldn't do much for me. The thing is that most of the main characters in video games are male. Whenever people think of characters that would be really cool for Smash, they think of Dante, Leon, Crash Bandicoot, Phoenix Wright, Sora, Geno, Doomguy, Steve, Master Chief, etc. Most of the speculated characters are male because that is the majority of the icons in the gaming industry and since they are main characters, people have more of an attachment to them than side characters. Not to mention the main character always seems to get in first.

While there is a good selection of female characters, they are just overshadowed by all the male characters. I have no doubt though that we will get at least one female character in the second fighters pass. Overwatch is still popular and Overwatch 2 is coming to the Switch, Lara Croft has legacy and plenty of fan requests, Puyo Puyo is popular in Japan and Sega is pushing the series in the west, and Dixie Kong and Elma are some of the highest requested first party characters left.

And that is not even counting costumes. For example, if Crash gets in, Coco will likely be an alternate skin for Crash since they are similar in shape and height and Coco has been shown to be as talented as Crash.

But that doesn’t really change anything does it? Sakurai or Nintendo can still add whoever they want. That’s the reality and not some made up rule/logic that so called fans want to apply.

If Sakurai wanted to add f****** Mareanie he could because he’s not going to look at your logic and force himself to comply to it when he is the one who sets the foundations in the first place. The reality is Sakurai can add whoever he wants, even if someone had a gun to his head forcing him to add a certain character, nothing says he has to comply
tbf by the time they locked the DLC in SwoShi wasn't out yet so if they wanted a gen 8 mon, Sakurai's options would be the starters or whatever they want to promote later

For female characters, I’d like for Ms. Pac-Man, Chell and Amaterasu to be in Smash.

......Also, Is anyone else intrigued about the possibility of Spirits/AT promotions for DLC? Oh, right, new franchises bias.
Cover me in puppies now. :)

I do agree with that. I’m just having a hard time believing the idea that Sakurai absolutely wouldn’t add anyone other than the starters. If Sakurai wanted to he could. Although it probably will be, it isn’t necessarily set in stone.

It seems a bit silly for others in threads to assume Sakurai has to follow patterns they notice which then means it gets established into a rule etc when he doesn’t. Characters like Piranha Plant should prove that.

It's reality. There's so many Pokemons in the games, so he's going to limit himself to only the important ones like the Starters or popular legendaries that got their own movie like Mewtwo and Lucario since they're the most recognizable Pokemons of any generation while every other random Pokemon are going to be part of the Pokeball items.
So Zarude confirmed then?

Isn't anyome intrigued at the prospect of another third-party female since Bayonetta? Oh yeah, male bias.

Getting dogpiled in three...two...one...
Lady we literally talked about Junko yesterday and characters like 2B and Reimu are always brought up. Don't go back to flaming like you did before Byleth.

The Blizzard drama was because of China, as Tencent has a stake in Blizzard. We got Terry, who's owned by SNK, which is owned fully by Tencent. Morality isn't a thing for the gaming industry and certainly not Smash as we got content from a homophobic Japanese supremacist war crime denier
Pretty big correction on the SNK part: SNK is owned under a joint venture (Leyou Technologies - based in Hong Kong, together with the Chinese 37 Games and Orient Securities). Now, Tencent is about to - through another smaller firm - help buy out Leyou, so you'll be right in one sense.

Otherwise, yea you're practically on point. Blizzard's games gained steam there before Tencent getting 5 % in A-B, but that 5 % stake no doubt played a part with Blizzards... handling of that.

Can someone please explain why Arle is hyped up so much? As far as I'm aware she's kind of a nobody, so an explanation as to why she's in the spotlight would be appreciated.

Reimu I can realistically see. Touhou is kind of Japan's biggest indie hit as far as I can tell.

And no, Coco and Crash aren't similar in any way, much less to the point where they're interchangeable. They're both humanoid, but that's it.

We were just talking about this in Rate their Chances. Assist trophy upgrades are definitely a split opinion. Many people seem to think they completely deconfirm fighters even for the second pass, and many people think they don't matter and Sakurai will add whoever he wants. Personally I fall into the latter. I do think assist trophies could be upgraded, though I'm not confident in that happening. Still, Sakurai can add whatever character he wants. It's his game. People like to point out that making assist trophies playable would be a waste of time and resources when that is actually wrong. If you think about it, it actually saves time and resources because the character already has a model and some basic animations.

In a way, speculating about the second fighters pass is almost like speculating for a new Smash game. It's not like the first fighters pass which was chosen while the base roster, assist trophies and spirits were decided. We have a fresh wave of characters, this is the time to negotiate for characters who may already be in the game, but can be negotiated again to be upgraded. It really does feel like this pass opened up the door to a bigger variety of characters.

Coco and Crash are literally the same in the remakes in terms of gameplay, so echoes are at least possible

It may not be a problem to you but yeah. Most people associate themselves with the gender they pick.

I'm just lovin' myself.
That is a tiny part of why I pick my characters so I can understand why having a female rep matters to you. Sometimes we like to pick a character to identify ourselves with.

They have enitrely different body structures. Crash has longer arms and a smaller lower body with short legs, while Coco is more evenly proportioned with significantly shorter arms and an actual neck. At MOST Coco could be a semi-clone, but echoes they are not.

I mean, I'm just judging from the N. Sane Trilogy, where they're identical gameplay wise

It's like Isabelle and Villager being speculated as echoes, they can't be echoes because Isabelle has a different skeleton to Villager.

I feel as though folks aren’t paying enough attention to the fact that Nintendo is calling most of the shots for DLC. This isn’t a case where Sakurai straight up “adds whoever he wants”.

Do I believe the DLC picks could absolutely be things he’d have wanted to add? Yes. But based on the way he describes the selection process, Nintendo asks him about a character, and they’ve gone from there to talk to the creators. If I remember correctly, Sakurai said they’ve yet to turn down a character at least for gameplay reasons.

At this point, the hope of any character...1st parties, 3rd parties, Spirit upgrades ( I personally feel ATs are out altogether), female characters...it all comes down to their standing with Nintendo, or their intentions in the future.

Sakurai does not have the same freedom as he has in the past with DLC, nor is it the same as base roster. We can’t keep just looking at this as if it’s the same, otherwise we’re going to have a bunch of people wide eyed, jaw agape, not understanding how they were clearly wrong.

Not saying I’m right all the time either. I just think folks are getting themselves set up for disappointment when they’re ignoring certain signs, especially because people seem to use, “Sakurai can do whatever he wants!” As a reason to make their most wanted have a chance at all.

Just something I’ve noticed.

Echoes or Alt skins? She might as well just be a female skin for Crash like Wendy for Bowser Jr. or the various female villager alts.

Like I said I’m certainly aware of this but I was just pointing out to someone that both can add whoever they want. I should have probably clarified that originally.

Of course likelihood exists but nothing right now is straight up on or off the table. When using terminology such as ‘reality’ or ‘confirmed’ is why it should be called out as it is neither.

And real quick, I really wasn’t to bolster the chances of any character I want. I don’t want Mareanie, I was just thinking on my feet the most absurd character they could add and that’s what came to mind

I’ve seen quite a few 75%’s. I must say this is the first time I’ve seen a support thread flock to the rate their chances thread and give their character an abysmally high rating whilst not really acknowledging how little we know about the dlc and details like that.

Obviously the assist trophy could also mean anything but that is also worth keeping in mind. I guess it’s pretty surprising that he is getting higher ratings than some people gavd characters like Lloyd... but I suppose they are from his support thread so if anyone knows what he has going for him they do

I'm still bummed that Dante isn't in yet, he seems pretty much like a perfect pick with his giant moveset and series history. Plus they already added Bayonetta, which wouldn't even exist without Devil May Cry. Realistically the most likely pick from Capcom would be a Monster Hunter, but maybe they'll skip out on it because we already have the most iconic character from it as a boss

If I recall, Greninja was chosen due to Sakurai getting some early artwork and liking him, and Incineroar was chosen due to Sakurai wanting a wrestler-type fighter, so while Nintendo could certainly be different and just want a new starter, they could always go with a Pokémon like Falinks or something if they don’t just ask Sakurai for “new Pokémon” (giving him more freedom with it).

Never really checked it out. Just that I’ve noticed nowadays that people don’t really flock in and give them really high ratings like that at least from what I’ve noticed as of late. I’m aware people do obviously flock tho

Poop can't believe I forgot obviously Lara Croft.

She is after all THE female video game protagonist. The fact she's never been in consideration is shocking.

It's reality. Sakurai is never going to go through the entire list of new Gen 8 Pokemons and pick ones like Orbeetle, Cramorant, or Dracovish. That's just how it's always going to work.
Also Nintendo are the ones picking, not Sakurai, so of course it's going to be a Starter Pokemon from SwSh. Thinking that it's going to be random Pokemon like Thievul or Cursola is just ridiculous.
Did this dude really just try to tell us that Lucario is a legendary?

Oh goodness, I wasn't attempting to call you out specifically or anything like that! It's honestly just something I've seen on this website and elsewhere mainly having me post it. Even if you feel I was pointing out at you specifically, you wouldn't even be the "worst" case of that. No worries! I apologize if that's what it felt like.

I do agree that using "confirmed" and "a lock" are crazy at this point. We don't know anything about Pass 2, but while I believe all that, I don't think it's fair for some folks to disregard all past DLC precedent and say, "ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!?!", when history says certain things might be more likely than others. That in itself, to me, is a pillar of speculation: Context-based discussion or at least evidence-based mixed with opinion and otherwise.

The fact Sakurai isn't the highest power in the universe confuses the peasants.
Eh, let's not call them peasants. One thing I have to remind myself from time to time is the sheer hype of Smash. Despite the fact that I don't feel as attached to Smash speculation as I used to, I still get why folks will do anything in their power for validation of other fans who disagree with them. I was once the "Snake stan" for Wii U when I was convinced he'd be DLC. Then I was the "Resident Evil known as Biohazard in Japan guy", and they got spirited away. Smash can make people do awesome (and crazy) things.

This is in no way related to the RTC thread acting like Isaac has a 50% chance of getting in
It's mostly a mix of folks not understanding probability and how a 64% isn't "failing" like in academics. Anything over 50% puts a character as more likely than half the field. In most cases that's...not true. Sure, placing any character at 100% is crazy, but even saying something like...75%, 80% or 90% is crazy right now too.

There's always the fact that people will be confident in their convictions, but I personally feel the "Upgrade" argument has been put into an echo chamber that has led folks to just...believe it's happening. I mean, it could! We absolutely could get an upgrade. But to act as if this idea, something that has never happened within the same game before, and the vision of each pack since Wii U has been new series, or new characters, it...doesn't necessarily lend itself well to that idea.
I'm still bummed that Dante isn't in yet, he seems pretty much like a perfect pick with his giant moveset and series history. Honestly, with DMC3 and the context around it on Switch makes me think he's got a good shot. Then you have the fact that the game itself has been about expanding the crossover as much as possible (save for the occasional ad pick), the fact that the Dante interview with Mr. Itsuno was, contextually, about Dante in Smash...

Ugh, getting myself too excited for the possibility. Dante would be so great.

I'm legit wondering if they could straight up make Fake Crash a proper alternate costume character ala Alph or the Koopalings. He did have his fans in Japan, after all...

They can call anything they want an echo. They haven't told us any constraints on who can be an echo of whom.

Most people in RTC have very poor concepts of probability. I eventually stopped bothering assigning chance percentages. The game's setup doesn't make sense for want percentages either. A ranked choice voting system would be more appropriate for gauging interest in characters, unless one has no strong preferences--but then why should we care about their opinion?

For female characters, I'd like:
Dixie Kong
Impa
Elma
Ms. Pac-Man (echo)
Viridi (echo)
Tetra
Chun-Li
Morrigan
Shantae
Arle
Roll
Jill Valentine
Octoling (echo)
Medusa (echo)
Fiora
Lara Croft
Terra Branford
Reimu
Lyn
Midna
Lip
Krystal
Toadette (Toad echo)
Coco (Crash echo)
Pyra/Mythra (paired with Rex)

That's my take, now I'm off to play the FF7 Remake Demo. Which just reminded me to add Tifa Lockhart to the list.

Some of these are already on my signature but those on mobile probably can't see that.

I think it’s overall interesting that some parts of the Smash fanbase do dismiss characters they don’t know. That’s arguably natural when one goes to a forum to speak about their most wanted.

However, it kinda goes beyond that. Some fans shoot down much larger or well known picks, or understate the impact their games have had, especially if they aren’t on Nintendo consoles. Or, worst of all, they’re from a game *gasp* someone hasn’t played.

Though, it seems that’s mostly a difference when many folks want smaller, lesser known picks. Smash has done a good job leveling that out, but it gets more questionable when many of those lesser known wants are potentially out in NPC positions. It’s an unfortunate reality, but that also doesn’t mean the more universally known or popular characters are definitely in or something.

Ok that’s like TWO JONESPOSTS TODAY.

I’ve seen quite a few 75%’s. I must say this is the first time I’ve seen a support thread flock to the rate their chances thread and give their character an abysmally high rating whilst not really acknowledging how little we know about the dlc and details like that.
*cough* Geno *cough*

but I suppose they are from his support thread so if anyone knows what he has going for him they do
Thank you! You are the first one I see acknowledging that the fans of a character are indeed more aware of what are the boons and banes of said character. The number of 0% chance rate for Isaac is astounding, despite all the speculation he got before the game launch, and despite all the clues that suggests something is coming around Golden Sun. I believe most of Isaac's fans are more down-to-earth on his own chance than others; we've been disappointed often enough to know that nothing is guaranteed after all. But we are also well aware of his own strengths in this little game of speculation.

Is he a lock? Clearly not! I didn't say that!

My personal opinion is, if an upgrade happens, Isaac is the top-contender thanks to his potential as a fighter, as a new serie representative, as his potential of stage, musics and spirits, and maybe a new game thus making him an advertisement pick.

The question is: will it happen? Well... why it wouldn't? Some people doesn't expect an upgrade, but we got our fair of unexpected picks for as long as Smash existed, between a real toy :ultrob:, a third-party :ultsnake:, a character from not-really-a-game :ultwiifittrainer:,a few clearly not highly expected third-party:ultcloud::ultjoker::ult_terry:, a generic creep :ultpiranha:...

Expect the unexpected.

Genuine question, why exactly do people in this thread seem to think 2B is likely? I've seen a decent amount of people wanting her and that's cool and all but I'm just a little confused why some people seem to think she's really likely for Pass 2.

I believe they meant WFT is the one from “not really a game”.

I believe Snake was labeled as “a third party”.
