LoL it's like they don't know that Smash is meant for game characters ONLY.
Is this just a random Japanese news website? Not to say we should ignore those 3000+ responses, but seeing Kirito in the Top 15 amazes me not knowing the specific demographic that answered this. Anyway, yeah, Sora seems pretty right. This still goes to show what a cluster**** we have in the speculation scene right now. Source Gaming's poll probably won't look any better or much different.
I also think people sleep on Sora's popularity during the Ballot era as well. A lot of it happened outside of the core fanbase, but pretty much the entire KH fanbase rallied together to vote for Sora. KH Youtubers with tens of thousands of subscribers were constantly making videos and Twitter posts reminding people to vote for Sora. Casual fans got in on it too, which led to a lot of people voting for Sora. I'd also say Sora's had a consistent presence in fan polls since then as well.

How can we live in a world where Kirito got more votes than Goku for Smash Bros? Reset the world, unplug it and plug it back in.
Compared to others, 3000+ participants is a pretty notable size. Could be bigger, but no poll is getting over 10000 participants unless someone like Alpharad runs it themselves.
It's not really a random site. Not the biggest, but not a minor as well.
Idk, in a western top fifteen I suspect you'd see Travis, Master Chief, Doom Guy, possibly Rayman, Scorpion, Shantae and/or Isaac, and Waluigi - who frankly I'm surprised wasn't on this list. Ditto with Phoenix Wright. Meanwhile I doubt you'd see Reimu, Kirito, Saber, or Arle in the top fifteen. And imo Sephiroth, Hunter and Rex are borderline. If nothing else they'd be towards the bottom.
His popularity seems more apparent on sites outside this one, which is strange considering he is one of a very small number of third-parties to have popularity which has endured since around Brawl times. Even others such as Bomberman or Ryu Hayabusa have seen relatively drastic dips and resurgences, whereas Sora has been much steadier.
People probably don't pay attention to every Sakurai excerpt like we do. It's not like he said that thing in a Direct.
And then the trouble with polls run by personalities is it's going to be made up largely of their fanbase, who usually have their biases coloured by the person they've congregated around. Like, when papagenos conducts a poll, I assume the results would skew more towards Geno than if someone else were helming it.
Speculation is effectively a sitcom where we learn a lesson only to forget it a week later.

I still don't get why people vote based on relevancy and not for what they actually want. You have a chance to ask for your dream character, who cares if it's obscure or forgotten. K Rools and Banjos happen sometimes.

Someone earned more votes than Bayonetta and managed to break into the Snake/Veterans tier was failed in his/her negotiation. I only can see Sora tbh.

I'd bet money they tried for Sora during Sm4sh DLC era and failed. The question is whether they tried again, and if they did, when.

I guess Sora is the only one where failed negotiations seem unsurprising, but frankly Banjo and K. Rool reaching that popularity tier seems pretty plausible as well.
Sword Art Online is a huge anime, both in the West and Japan. There's a reason A1 Pictures keeps making it.
I don't think Ayumi was saying no other character reached that tier. More so that a character reached that tier and then failed negotiations.
It's funny because some of the "look how negative we are" comments actually bring more negativity than the comments being commented on.
Huh. Well I know its huge but to see a character from it trounce both Geno and Goku is unheard of for me. Probably just the fact that it's a random internet Smash Bros poll, though.

Considering how massive Touhou and Fate Stay Night are in Japan, it’s probably not surprising they got on the list.
I agree to an extent, but a large poll should be able to limit the bias enough to let us see what the majority demands. Like, a poll ran by Alpharad would probably have Lyn and his meme of the month rank unusually high, but the most wanted characters (Sora and Crash and whatnot) will come out on top regardless.
Oh trust me, I'm aware how huge they are. I just never thought Japan would seriously consider the two of them besides mere meme picks and it was ironically, a Western thing people wanted them in. Especially since I keep hearing stuff about how divisive they are in Japan for Smash.
