This is selfish of me considering it's my favorite Pokemon, but I would much rather have Sceptile announced as a fighter than any of the new guys. I don't hate any of them like I did for certain past starters, (Chesnaught and Primarina) but they're all just so... meh honestly. Sceptile has a lot of attitude, and is still a Grass starter from a generation that hasn't gotten a representative. I'd really like it to be included even if it is just so I can die happy now that everyone is truly here
It definitely is limiting for Pokemon to relegate itself with the recent gen. I'd love for some previous gen Pokemon to get some love in the future. The Pokemon fanbase will never agree on anything in this regard, but I'd be down for a Gen 4 or 2 Pokemon--mainly out of nostalgia.

Isn’t the NEW sticker still up on the Characters panel anyway? Wait till it disappears, then you’ll know a direct is imminent.

Oh boy, there is... a lot to unpack here.

I'm not really seeing your point as to the negatives here. It mostly seems to be that certain long sought characters were still not made playable, which I can definitely understand the anger and defeat towards, but all of your points on third party DLCs here ring as nothing but positive to me.

Sure, Nintendo wasn't lacking in material before going full third party, but the speculation is a lot less homogenous, it wasn't just "oh, new Fire Emblem," or "ow new first party IP rep," it can be literally anyone. Maybe I'm just being an overly happy Joker fan here, but any doom and gloom from the November Direct was shattered when I saw Joker's reveal because it proved to me that the team and Sakurai were willing to go outside the box to make Smash the best it could be and incorporate as much as it does.

I'm going on a tangent, but I'm just not sure how this desire to expand and represent more things is bad for a game like Smash that celebrates the history of the games that it has, even if a few characters do fall through the cracks.
I lost like my top 25 (probably more) Nintendo characters that I would love to see playable in Smash Bros Ultimate. They're not going to happen ever. Now it can literally be any third party character and I can't be upset that any certain third party character didn't make it in because of all the legal process that must go into when licensing a character out. As much as I would love 2B or Sol Badguy to get in I would be an idiot to be disappointed that they didn't get in, because Nintendo doesn't own them.
So when all your likely, safe bet choices are all six feet under and left with the mystery box that can be any third party character it's hard to be really excited for the future of Ultimate. Hell, Fighter 5 could be a third party character that nobody has ever talked about on this board; it's hard to be excited with so much uncertainty.

Probably for the best imo. Allows me to focus on other things in my life.

What I heard that a source claimed that the January Direct will be coming in January 9th which later in last night the same source people heard that it will be a Pokemon Direct instead which the source agrees, and then in today, the same source said that the regular direct will be coming in the 16th of January.
Can you link the tweets that predicted this?

Pokémon Directs have been held right next to general Nintendo Directs (And I believe E3 as well) so it's not quite that bad. Still, I'm not sure what all they have to talk about.
However, that pattern might be broken, and even if there is a new Nintendo Direct there's no guarantee of a new Smash character.

Maybe we're finally getting Diamond and Pearl remakes.

Sorry, but I’ll say it right now, Joker was the best thing to ever happen in the history of Smash speculation.

I guess at this point it's just a difference in priority for the person. I'm personally fine with the roster as is and I'm excited to see where it goes. If no other Nintendo character is added into Smash from here on then I'll be a bit disappointed at those that could have been but I'm optimistic still at the idea of the truly unexpected.

I'm sorry that Ultimate isn't going the way you would have liked it to. That's never a good feeling, and I hope it does make the turnaround you'd like to see

Forgot to add: with this in mind, this pretty much deconfirms a reveal during the Pokémon direct.

(tbh why WOULD they reveal anything at a direct that isn’t general or focused on Smash)

The only time the pattern has been broken was in February. And yes, all of this is true, but also there is literally no reason to keep posting it over and over.

Can't say I'm happy to see a Direct that isn't general so that we can possibly end this unappealing Fighter's Pass cycle.

But I'm even more appalled it's a Pokemon Direct. Don't get me wrong, there's all kinds of goods things they COULD announce, and yet I fear a repeat of the Ultra games announcement.

Eh. With all of the information we have so far I can't believe that we won't get a reveal in the next five weeks regardless of what hosts it. And I am wrong on this it's probably because of delays or something.

Maybe we're finally getting Diamond and Pearl remakes.
Pfft. No.

XB2’s land of challenges seemed to emphasize all three mainline Xenoblade games crossing over, with Shulk, Fiora and Elma as guest Blades as well. Maybe Elma, Rex and Pyra could make a guest appearance in XCDE. Probably just as optional bosses or NPCs, tho imagine Elma as a guest party member and setting UM music to Uncontrollable tho... hnnnnnnNNNNNNNG
Is it just me or should they just go for broke? And cram the XB1, XBX and XB2 casts into one game just to see what kind of weird story would be printed out?Maybe I'm the one who always wants to go for broke.

Also, my (really belated) thoughts on Zelda:

I feel the situation comes across as "Who do you choose as the metaphorical dam buster?" I find that question only getting tougher with time, not least since there are more potential candidates for the next Zelda slot, but also: I don't think Nintendo has much of an idea which of the prospective candidates are more popular within the hardcore Smash community etc. Not only does popularity fluctuate, but Zelda's also the flagship with the least spinoffs. They have less of a "proving ground" to test and see which characters stand out compared to other flagships.

I do agree with Calamitas (IIRC, could be off here) that Midna probably had a really solid shot during Brawl, but that's much less clear now. When she, Skull Kid and Ghirahim are all Assist Trophies. That last point is important since deciding which of those three (or any other, like Impa) gets to be the "dam buster" will probably be hellish on the developers' side of things. I'm saying that since all three have potential to offer something unique, but I strongly doubt we're getting 2 or more Zelda characters at the same time. Not even Fire Emblem (no, I'm not counting Lucina as a full character for argument's sake).

So you prefer if we were all just expecting more Fire Emblem or Pokemon characters?

Fire Emblem characters riding Pokemon.

Problem solved. :4pacman: (Seriously, dunno. FE by a smidge I guess)

Well considering Sword and Shield's story was Hop, and Victor/Gloria deciding to raid Chairman Rose's tower for no reason and then revealing Mr. Rose to be evil the next day there's at least nothing for them to ruin. lol

Still not getting any proposed Ultra Sword and Ultra Shield though. I learned my lesson with the previous cash grabs.

Think of it this way: With Pokemon having its own dedicated Direct, it means there won't be as much Pokemon stuff shown in an actual direct and we can see more variety

Just a positive there.

Good news. We may or may not have a lead on potential Direct dates.

He is saying to check back on Jan 16, Jan 30, and Feb 13 for news about this.

One of those days could be a Direct, who knows.

(DISCLAIMER: I am NOT using this as evidence for a Dante Smash announcement, he has been hard deconfirmed for FP5 imo)
Dante being in season 2 seems fair enough though, especially if they announce the second pass there. If it even IS a pass.

It's really hard to expect who it could possibly be, honestly, any tenuous Nintendo link could mean that they're in, and DMC is on Switch now

Joker finally gave us a playable gamer after our only gamer representation was a stage in Smash 4 and vanilla Ultimate.

While Square-Enix instead of Capcom, the The World Ends With You site is under maintenance. If not a TWEWY 2, it could be Neku opening the second fighters pass.

best timeline tbh

Actually, Terry Bogard officially games as a hobby and Banjo-Kazooie play a Gameboy on the file select screen.

Look, I love the Smash Bros roster except for Piranha Plant but if they're going to keep making DLC I would love for them to go back make some Assist Trophies & Mii Costumes playable and not leave them like this.

Joker paved the way for future gamer reps to get in.
:ultpokemontrainer: has game consoles in his house and you can't convince me :ultvillager: aren't nerds when you can literally buy NES games in the first AC. Gamer representation started as far back as Brawl.

Oh my God, I bloody said that I like third parties. I just want some of the Nintendo characters that were turn into Assist Trophies & Mii Costume to be part of this roster. Yeah, Joker showed that every third party character has a legit shot, but if we keep getting third party characters it starts to feel less special and just undermines the rest of the Nintendo series that people wanted playable. Mix it up a bit.

This is true, but the plot of Persona 5 is that Joker lives in a society and has to rise up with his gang of gamer buddies. He even has a more epic gamer teach him 1337 gun moves.

Yes, but Joker represents the oppression we as gamers face in this modern society, ruled by Chads

But Red is an inspiration. He played the original Finaly Fantasy and Dragon Warrior back in Pallet Town before thinking to himself, "I'm gonna be my own RPG!" If that's not a self-made gamer story, I don't know what is.

January 17th the new wave of amiibo releases and January 20th the ‘Pass’ online maintenance begins. The 16th would be a nice day for a direct now that I really think about it.

Okay but hear this. Pokemon is symbolic to our plight. Blue/Gary represents the chads and Red represents the oppressed gamer population.

A... Pokemon Direct, huh.

Ugh.

I know normal directs have been not-too-far off from Pokemon ones before, but I don't think I'm really feeling that this time. All the maintenance and such really felt like it was leading up to one, y'know? Maybe the 20th, I guess.

Plus I literally only just unmuted Pokemon from my Twitter last night since I was so sick of seeing the drama from both sides, I REALLY don't want to have to do that again.

That boat sailed. It should be clear by now that Sakurai wants to continue to build his vision of the greatest crossover in video gaming, since he said that this opportunity will never come again. That is why the DLC has been so Third Party happy.

And he shouldn’t let a minority of people still throwing hissy fits that Waluigi and Geno aren’t playable get in the way of that, imo.

...wait, so we got a Pokémon direct?

That's disappointing and hysterical at the same time.

I'm not expecting a Gen whatever mon as FP5 (and I think people would riot if there were), so I guess we'll get another general direct soon after, but definitely not this week. I guess they'll try some Poké-damage control after Dexit - who wants to bet that after all of the "We won't be expanding the Dex!" they come out and say "We've expanded the Dex!" Strange... I never considered Pokémon to have enough to talk about considering Sw/Sh just came out.

...unless they're announcing another game. Pokémon Snap for Switch, by chance?
and keep Growlithe and Arcanine in it please.

Still, with the Richter/DSamus amiibo data missing, Smash needs an update by the 17th at the absolute latest. I just know that, whoever gets announced as FP5, there's going to be even more salt than there was for Bayo and Corrin back in 4. It's looking more likely that they'll maybe do a double reveal for FP5 and whoever comes as post-pass, just to soften the blow.

I'm praying. It's all I can do at this point. The 15th or 16th look like great dates right now, so we'll probably be getting our answer then. And I'm liking the 16th for ...other... announcements for other games...

Okay. That's it.

You can't just say that and not expect me to immediately be friends with you
Us gamers gotta stick together.

Red is supposedly single even into adulthood so don't get your hopes up with Hannah.
