Heihachi is in, and he has no alternate colors, just different skins. All as a reference to Tekken's customization

I'd really love to see what Sakurai could do in adapting Tekken to Smash. After he did such a great job with Ryu/Ken and especially Terry, I've gone from being kind of meh on fighting game characters in Smash to downright excited at the concept of more.

Sol Badguy or Heihachi (or both) for Smash in 2020!

What is going on
What I heard that a source claimed that the January Direct will be coming in January 9th which later in last night the same source people heard that it will be a Pokemon Direct instead which the source agrees, and then in today, the same source said that the regular direct will be coming in the 16th of January.

Rillaboom, Cinderace, and Inteleon would all have extremely unique movesets so I can't pick one of them to support for Smash.
It would be even more unique to pick something that isn't the third starter in a row.

While I agree with your point, the only exceptions to this are Puff, Pichu, Mewtwo, and Lucario, one beign a long running joke, another being another joke, and closely related to the mascot, and the last two getting whole movies. It's unfortunate but if we do get another Pokemon it's probably a starter.

God, people would just ****ing die if FP5 turned out to be Rillaboom. Fairly unlikley given that it'll only be 20 minutes, I know, but I still hate having to face that fork in the road where it could possibly happen.

Hopefully, we do see a Nintendo Direct next week if the patterns still hold. FP5 really isn't going to get that much time to gestate hype, huh?

I think that Jigglypuff only got in because of its popularity in the anime and its similar body shape to Kirby, meaning that they could reuse some of Kirby's animations.

I genuinely wouldn't mind, but I would prefer to see them expanded upon more in a game like Pokkén (provided the Direct might actually be a new season for that/the usual "that game still exists?" ensues) where they aren't as restricted.

Toxtricity on the other hand.

I had a dream Heihachi was Fighter 5 and his stage was a reskin of the boxing ring stage but with green neon lights.

My prediction for Thursday (Note: Very lazy description.):

blah blah blah Pokémon. Then transition to new trailer or whatever. Red in a stadium. Throws out Charizard. Camera pans over to a hand. No ball thrown just points. Kid shouts something or other. Agumon Joins the Battle (clever phrase instead).

See? It fits.

Nah, the main character gets in first, so Ash must be next
If we're getting a Pokemon fighter, as much as I would like Cinderace, Inteleon, or Zacian as our next pick, I'd prefer to have Cynthia in the game. Just give us Roserade, Glaceon, and Garchomp, and we'd be set.

A lot of hype over Agumon, when we all know the real stand out star is the man himself Bancho Leomon

I personally prefer Bancho Lillymon, but she doesn't exist anymore :(

I’m about to do some olympic tier straw grasping.

The previous Smash presentations for Joker, Hero, and Terry were all announced at 8pm-9pm ET.

If there was a presentation/shadow drop tomorrow, hypothetically speaking, revealing FP5, wouldn’t it make sense for it to be announced at that time? (Only entertaining this possibility because of the 7/11 ad and Amiibo theory)

Likely won’t happen though.

I'm away for like two hours, and they just go ahead and reveal. . . a Pokémon Direct coming up? Can't say I expected that, but okay. I wonder if there's gonna be a new mainline title announced there. . . though then again, the second pair of games of a Generation are usually announced far later in the year than January. Now I'm genuinely curious about what's gonna be revealed there.

Anyway:
Okay, just wanted to check on Gwen's statement and, yeah.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Direct

There's been a general Direct shortly after every Pokemon Direct with the exception of the one in February. I'm thinking next week we'll know.
I was honestly thinking the same when I first saw that announcement. General Directs these days tend to be close to Pokémon Directs.

Just something about the fact that after we've discussed and speculated and hoped for a direct this week and then we end up getting one like most of us wanted, and it ends up as a Pokemon direct. Just a nice serving of irony coming from the universe and honestly I'm not too mad at it, its kind of hilarious.

Who knows?
They might be hiding something behind the Pokemon direct.

Uhh...I would think the two are basically one in the same right? As in a Xenosaga remaster would be KOS-MOS' revival project. And since that's not the case, i'm hard pressed seeing her as Fighter 5 personally.
This statement could kill KOS-MOS' appearance in Xenoblade DE or future crossovers too.

You have every right to feel how you feel, but this is such a pessimistic view of the game for just one Direct out of the several it had that absolutely dominated every other reveal. Like, even with the Assist Trophy deconfirms, we still have so much, and there's so much care here that the future is bright and I don't think we should be expecting a crash and burn because of a few missed opportunities.

And on top of that, full bias, but the DLC in this game far surpasses Smash 4's with hype, and is absolutely a good thing to invest in because otherwise... well...
:ultbanjokazooie: this wouldn't have happened

That being said, an Uprising Switch port would be a fantastic thing, even if Sakurai wasn't involved
Here's the thing, ever since that one Direct I actually became super right with the direction that Smash Bros has went. I had the feel thing Spirits deconfirms characters; with this Fighters Pass we have four unique character all bring their unique Spirit Board, which shows that if the character is a Spirit or has their series really represented well with Spirits then they ain't going to be part of the Fighters Pass. So basically that means we have just about every single Nintendo character out window along with Geno, Shantae, Rayman, Wonderful 101, and Resident Evil along with other third parties that got in that I can't remember since there's around 1200.

So with the Spirits Deconfirmation just deconfirming Fighters Pass characters we also have Mii Costumes which sinks the boat even more for particular character for what could be a good part of Ultimate's futue. Looking at all of Smash 4 not a single Mii Costume was upgrade during that game. People want to say "K Rool deconfirm from Ultimate because of his Mii Costume LOL," but that costume came out for Smash 4 and would be an easy thing to port over. So with a new game they're not going to have previous Mii Costumes be the deciding factor because more likely or not they start by selecting characters first and then later in development they see if they can transfer over Mii Costume or not. So we're in the position that certain character might just be stuck as these costumes because just like Sakurai said "this is a way to feel like you're playing as the character." If Sakurai believes that players are able to feel like they're playing as those characters then why would he go back to make them playable? They're represented and you're playing as them, it checks off what Sakurai thinks and can just focus on new content. So we got characters like Rex, Chibi Robo, Saki and the others dead on arrival because of Sakurai's mentality. So even if Spirits are going to still be up for consideration to be upgrade in future DLC the same probably can't be said for the Mii Costume characters.

And we got Assist Trophies where we have characters like Krystal, Bomberman, Akira, Alucard, Isaac, Shadow, Shovel Knight, Ashley, Takamaru, Waluigi, Springman, Starfy, and Skull Kid who have no future for Smash Bros Ultimate. There's items, they're represented, they're in the game, and Sakurai thinks that every single person cheers and loves to see their favorite character in any kind of capacity. Regardless of how anyone actually feels about Assist Trophy there is no denying that their fate is cemented to continuing to be that 1 in 59 chance item for the rest of Ultimate's life cycle. Sakurai is trying to represent so many series and fan request, so given the chance of making more DLC why would he ever go back to make an Assist Trophy playable. This entire board shows me that it's wrong to diss on the Assist Trophy, so Sakurai has zero reason to make these characters playable because are happy just to have their character be in the game. Instead he rather use his time to get new series instead of making these characters playable despite the fact that people want to play as them.

Now with all of that, knowing who is never getting into Smash Bros and the ones who have a rocky road to travel, it's hard to get excited for what Ultimate's future is going to be. Sure it was only one Direct, but Direct layed out how Ultimate's future was going to be like. It's like when your a kid and parents are driving up to McDonald, you're loving the build up, the direction that it's going. You're thinking you're going to get those Chicken McNuggets. You're screaming, you're happy, and then your father buys a black coffee; and that's the entire drive.

Now I will admit, there were kickass reveals for Ultimate's Fighters Pass. I love Joker. Happy for the Dragon Quest fans (despite how annoying they got). My heart goes out for Banjo fans despite not caring for him. And Terry is just a lot of fun to play as. But looking back at it there was no predicting these characters. Like who actually thought that Joker & Terry had a legitimate chance in making it into Smash Bros? Hell, Joker changed everything because before his reveal and after that last Direct people were like "I think Shy Guy, Captain Toad, Edlegard, and Bandana Waddle Dee are going to get in," and we're like "Doomguy has a great shot. Dark Souls is possible. Kos-Mos, Master Chief, Dante, 2B, and Ryu Hayabusa are on the table DLC." I love third parties, don't get me wrong, but there's so many third party characters out there and with the characters that are getting in already shows that there is no likely third party character anymore because everyone is just as likely. I would love Dante and Kos-Mos, but I'm idiot to invest in the idea of them coming because with how many characters and series are out there there is a great chance that some characters aren't on Nintendo & Sakurai's radar, and I can't blame them for that. There's so much that goes into getting these third party characters that I literally can't be upset if Ultimate ends and my most wanted third party character couldn't make the cut (but it is a different story if they got the rights to use them and did something like a Mii Costume or a Spirit).

So with how Smash Bros Ultimate has gone, despite the highs and lows, I can't for the life of me muster up the excitement of it's future. Seeing how Sakurai really wanted Ultimate to be the biggest crossover game ever he's probably going to be too busy trying to represent more series that aren't in the game and won't slow down to hear that people still want to play as the characters he made into Assist Trophy, Mii Costume, or Spirit.
It can literally take one announcement that changes everything we know about where Smash Bros is going and everything I say could be throw out the window. I welcome that possible future, I would love to be wrong, but with how things are currently going it's hard to imagine it being different.

God I hate writing this much.

Funny. A Pokemon Direct was the last thing any of us were expecting.

It's totally not gonna have anything relevant to Smash, but I'll humor the idea and say it'd be cool if one of the doggo Legendaries got announced. I really think either would make for a interesting addition to the roster. Dragapult, Obstagoon, and Cinderace would be cool too, though I kinda don't want the latter just because I really want to get something besides a starter. I would say Toxtricity, but I feel like people are just looking at the design and not thinking about how it would actually fight. Seems like a better fit as a Pokeball replacement for Barbara the Bat. Not sure I want Sirfetch'd, but that's mainly because it feels like a step backwards from Zacian.

Well, we might get one of the fully evolved Galar starters announced as a fighter.
This is selfish of me considering it's my favorite Pokemon, but I would much rather have Sceptile announced as a fighter than any of the new guys. I don't hate any of them like I did for certain past starters, (Chesnaught and Primarina) but they're all just so... meh honestly. Sceptile has a lot of attitude, and is still a Grass starter from a generation that hasn't gotten a representative. I'd really like it to be included even if it is just so I can die happy now that everyone is truly here

They’re not going to have a reveal in a Pokemon Direct, and anyone who is legitimately entertaining this possibility needs to think about the dozens of times this has been predicted.

We have done this song and dance everytime a game not named Smash gets news.

Pokémon Direct on Thursday? That's odd. I wouldn't expect anything more than updates about Pokémon Home, Pokémon Go!, Pokémon Masters, a reveal of a new spin off nobody cares about, and maybe a reveal of whatever the heck Pokémon Sleep is supposed to be.

It's also possible we'll see updates to Pokémon Sword, Pokémon Shield, and Pokkén Tournament, but the chances are so low I'd say they're negligible.

One thing is certain though. They will not be announcing a Smash character in a Pokémon Direct even if the two series are connected. Wait for the general Nintendo Direct that we'll get in a week or two.

Oh boy, there is... a lot to unpack here.

I'm not really seeing your point as to the negatives here. It mostly seems to be that certain long sought characters were still not made playable, which I can definitely understand the anger and defeat towards, but all of your points on third party DLCs here ring as nothing but positive to me.

Sure, Nintendo wasn't lacking in material before going full third party, but the speculation is a lot less homogenous, it wasn't just "oh, new Fire Emblem," or "ow new first party IP rep," it can be literally anyone. Maybe I'm just being an overly happy Joker fan here, but any doom and gloom from the November Direct was shattered when I saw Joker's reveal because it proved to me that the team and Sakurai were willing to go outside the box to make Smash the best it could be and incorporate as much as it does.

I'm going on a tangent, but I'm just not sure how this desire to expand and represent more things is bad for a game like Smash that celebrates the history of the games that it has, even if a few characters do fall through the cracks.

Because that was a one of reason people came up with for her smash inclusion. She was in XB2, so why not in XB1. That's all.
XB2’s land of challenges seemed to emphasize all three mainline Xenoblade games crossing over, with Shulk, Fiora and Elma as guest Blades as well. Maybe Elma, Rex and Pyra could make a guest appearance in XCDE. Probably just as optional bosses or NPCs, tho imagine Elma as a guest party member and setting UM music to Uncontrollable tho... hnnnnnnNNNNNNNG

For those that are worried we will have to wait until February, fear not.

The recent 7/11 ad which advertises the Fighter Pass runs up til Feb 2.

Hero and Banjo were both released before the expiration date of their ads.

Maybe not but it is happening soon. I really don't think we're gonna just have a random reveal and shadow drop in February.

Well with that information it sounds like we may get a same-day reveal and release. They've only got four weeks until that date so unless it's wrong for whatever reason they might take that route instead of revealing, waiting five days, and then explaining and releasing.
