I never wanted Pichu cut. I never wanted any of them cut. So what if in Brawl, there were 3 Links to play as? Big whoop. In Melee, I usually had 3 Marios duking it out; Mario, his doctor form, and in his "Wario" attire. Yeah, I was bummed that Wario himself wasn't playable, but in truth, having 3 Marios at once was HILARIOUS. How fun would it be to see the 3 different Links battling each other? I mean, you've got Young Link, who's from Ocarina of Time. You have the adult Link, from the Twilight Princess. And you have Toon Link from Wind Waker. 3 different Links, 3 different games, 3 different storylines. How can you go wrong with that?I feel the same way. Heck, prior to Sakurai saying "there will be cuts" there was not many people calling for cuts (and most of the people that did were only calling for Pichu to be cut).
And why not have Toon Zelda playable? No doubt there's some people out there wondering, "Which Zelda would win in a fight: Toon Zelda, or the more realistic Zelda?" Who cares if they'd fight identically? Besides, Toon Zelda doesn't transform into a Toon Sheik; there's no such character. But she COULD transform into her Tetra form, and Tetra is as unique as Sheik. So while it's true that the Zeldas would move and fight similarly, their alt. forms would not.
With Ganondorf, I'll be honest. After the N64 game, I kept envisioning Ganondorf appearing in the next Smash Bros. having a "Falcon Punch" attack. Turns out, it actually happened. I didn't care; I wanted to see Ganondorf appear in Smash. If it had to be as a "clone," fine.
And both Lucario and Mewtwo? I remember seeing an image on the Smash Bros. Dojo showing the two Pokemon in a "face-off." Obviously, Sakurai wanted to see it happen, and honestly, who WOULDN'T want to see it happen?
And like Starphoenix said, a lot of Japanese fans were distraught with the fact that Roy didn't return for Brawl. They weren't the only ones; fans outside of Japan were disappointed, myself included. So what if he fought the same way Marth did? Roy had different properties that separated the two. Their "sweetspots" were different, Roy had fire effects to some of his attacks, and he had a "one-hit kill" attack if circumstances were right.
See? It doesn't matter if there are two (or more) characters in a game that play the same. I mean, I wouldn't even care if Pikachu, Pichu, and Plusle & Minun were playable. True, some would go, "What? FOUR Pikachus!?" But that doesn't matter.
