Well chalk me up as one who thinks Smash Bros. is fine as a party game. It isn't meant to be a serious fighter, and is in fact the antithesis to such games (Sakurai's exact words). Party games aren't bad by definition; Smash Bros. proves that. I'm not arguing that new gameplay mechanics wouldn't be a great addition, but when people constantly use the words "catering to scrubs," they kind of doing like elitist @ssholes. Smash Bros. is fine as it is, and millions of scrubs like me agree. Sure, new mechanics would be fine, but I won't be butthurt if Smash Bros. 4 plays pretty much the same way as Brawl.

:phone:
Y'know what, fine. Keep Smash as a party game. Just don't come *****ing at me or anyone else when the other fighting game communities fail to take you seriously and laugh at you for it because you think change is suddenly a bad thing. No one said anything about it becoming a serious fighter, just a more competent fighter. Party games aren't bad, yes, you're right on that. But I don't see people running Mario Party/Tennis/Golf tournaments. Personally, this Smash didn't just cater to scrubs, it catered to twelve year olds (which sort of amounts to the same, but level with me here). Sakurai's thought was just cut the root of the techniques instead of making them an option like it should have been. I'm a "scrub", in technical aspects, but ****, I wouldn't have minded some Dashdancin' in or some Wavedashing (even though I oppose those techniques).

Tbh I'm expecting something like a Brawlee. A fusion of Brawl/Melee physics.
This would be sexy and I know it.

I just thought of a neat idea (even though I believe there is a zero percent chance of it happening): It would be cool if the Fighting Polygon Team returned but instead of being unplayable, they are alternate outfits for the character they represent.

Like I said I have no hope of it happening but it would be cool if they did that.
I can see this happening. I don't know how the code would have to be written, but it wouldn't be something that hard, just something to limit the B moves of the character when controlled by the CPU, have the game load FitCharPorygon.pcs/pac, and bam. That way, when we hack it, we can have polygons playable, and we'll dig up a code to limit B moves of a character (since if you load FitCharDark.pcs/pac in Brawl, it won't mute the characters, which is where I'm basing this off -- CPU is mute in Brawl using Dark, Player isn't. Thus, CPU only uses A moves in 4 using Porygon, Player has normal moveset).

Once again, this. That was part of Melee's beauty was that you could take it or leave it when it came to certain techniques. However, that by no means means you should expect to be the next M2K in a matter of a week.

What I've been suggesting for mechanics would still let you play Smash like before but don't expect to be the king of online warriors. Heck, look at Tekken or Soul Calibur which allow button mashing, but an advanced player will tell you it won't get far, but that shouldn't matter if you're going to play it as a party game.

a new topic, since I think this got skipped a while back

I recently saw this video with Sakurai explaining the Multiplayer in KI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Nwg0vFVyHo

now about the caulderon system, anyone feels like it sounds familiar? it should because it's EXACTLY like the Leveling system in The World Ends with you. in that game, when you turned your level down, the battles got harder, but you got m ore prizes and pins.

now you are probably thinking "Ok, so what's the big deal?" well, remember this?

http://wiiuinsiders.com/super-smash-bros-universe-leaked-fact-sheet/

now don't you think it's a .little Uncanny that there is a similar feature that was rumored in this document appering in a game sakurai is working on? this sheet may be more true then we thought...

It could just be coincidence. Was the Cauldron system mentioned prior to the leak?

This.

People, if you're going to judge B&W2's titles... Just leave. There's no hope for you. We cannot shake our heads at a game that has yet to be released.
I don't have a problem with b&w2, mind you. At first I thought that was going to be Grey version and was mad because it made me wonder why they couldnt just name it grey version. Then I found out it was a sequel, not an add-on. Honestly, the only pokemon games I've had a huge problem with are Diamond and Pearl.

Actually, I would have hoped that you would figure out from my post that you quoted that I'm not the kind of person who thinks they need to be "taken seriously" by a fighting game community. I won't be taken seriously, why exactly? I think change is a bad thing? Oh, I must not have mentioned in the post that you quoted that I'm not opposed to new techniques being added.

Except I did.

I said, and I quote, "I'm not arguing that new gameplay mechanics wouldn't be a great addition, but when people constantly use the words "catering to scrubs," they kind of sound like elitist @ssholes." Let me go ahead and add people that feel the need to be "taken seriously" in fighting game communities to the list of people that sound like elitist @ssholes. And also people who think that the only audience of a game that matters is the audience that sets up regular tournaments.

I wasn't saying that I hate Melee-esque techniques/principles that people use to widen the gap between themselves and everyone else who just wants to have fun playing the game. I find them pretentious and stupid, but I believe Smash Bros. should be able to be enjoyed by as many different people as possible in any way that they want. That's why anyone who says Brawl is anything less than a good game is sort of missing the point of the series. Nothing about Brawl is incompetent. It's enjoyable by literally everyone, if people would just get off their high horses. I'm sorry that many technical aspects of Melee were changed and that Brawl doesn't perfectly suit the style of play of super intense awesome superior warrior gamers, but that doesn't make it a bad game.

I'm just saying I'd rather have Smash be considered an actual choice as a fighter. To be embraced by more than just one community. To not be a ****storm every time it's mentioned. Your view of elitist *******s is jaded and distorted, possibly by past experiences.

I mean, really. I hate the tourneyfans probably just as much as you do, but the exception to me is that I at least respect and encourage what they're trying to go for - a game that can actually be taken seriously. If they enjoy the game playing no items on FD with only the top tiers, and a miracle worker kicking *** with a lower tier, then goddamnit, make it so! If that's how they have fun, I'm not going to step on their toes for it. It IS enjoyed by different people, but so far it's not reaching beyond enough different people. We're all but just one circle of fans of a game hardly considered worth existing by the other fighters. Brawl never was incompetent, but it did have a share of flaws that the prior didn't have (y'know, most famous example being tripping, but trust me when there are other factors that injure it's status as a game to be famous to its own professional sector compared to the prequel. In all aspects, Brawl was dumbed down so [everyone] can play it. Your definition of the word (everyone) is "every player regardless of skill". You know what Nintendo's definition is? "From 8 to 88 and all the in-betweens". And that's partly the reason why the game doesn't even take itself seriously. It just doesn't take the effort to. Sakurai stated it himself.

Call me crazy, but as much as I love the man for making Brawl the mess it is, I also strongly disagree with what he has done, because as it stands, Brawl was designed as a party game first and a competitive fighter last, when it should have been the opposite.

With this, I wanna see how Street Fighter X Tekken will fare in reviews, sales, casual followings, and competitive followings. Going by order of debut, they designed it as a competitive game first (the gems were even made for those players in mind) and a party game second. Funny thing is, when the gems were announced (namely the auto block and auto grab break ones), **** hit the fan, but as time went by and players got to explore more in demos and streams, people have really warmed up to the game, going from hyped but hating the "oddities" to people being hyped and embracing it in general.

I also want to say that any multiplayer game should be made with having a solid, balanced, design regardless of its audience. I'm not saying they should have Inception level of depth, but it shouldn't be made oh so exploitable in a negative sense.

Jose, what do you wanna wear to dinner tonight? Peach cosplay, or Zelda cosplay? No other CHOICES.

Does anyone else feel like Smash4 is going to have a lot of ladies, villains, and Smaller Franchises added? I feel like that makes up about 70% of everyone left to add.

I know it's a really controversial topic, but I hope SSB X has game play closer to Melee than Brawl's. I recently restarted Brawl after going on a Melee streak and GEEZ was there a huge different! Matches, in my opinion, are waaay too slow-paced in Brawl. The floatiness almost feels like it's trying to keep you away from your opponent! I have since switched back to Melee.

I think there is plenty to improve upon as far as Melee's game play is concerned, and that is what I hope they do. Brawl felt like a different take on the concept of Smash's basic game play elements and I feel like it was a wrong take.

I used to not think highly of advanced techniques like wave dashing and stuff, but now I don't mind them. Sure, wd'ing was initially a glitch but it turned into something wonderful that gives the game that much more depth, and from a game developer's perspective (I am not one, but I am assuming their perspective), I think that by denying the players a level of game play depth that I initially supplied to them I am limiting my game's audience (and thusly cash flow).

I think being good at Smash Bros. Brawl and being good at Smash Bros. Melee are two different things. Melee is, in my opinion, a much harder game to become skilled at, and is that much more rewarding when I have.

Clone characters should really be redone. Not Luigi, I mean, he's supposed to be really similar, but characters like Captain Falcon and Ganondorf? WTF? Why do these characters share the same move set?

I feel like it is too late to redo Falco, but he should've been more different as well. I don't think it's too late to redo Wolf, though I usually forget that he is even a Smasher in the first place. :p

While I acknowledge it's a little ridiculous to expect everything from the previous games to be included in the new installment, I think that if there is room on the disk after everything else is processed, past stages and music and cool stuff like that should fill it to the brim. I only mention this because I heard that the Brawl disc had a ton of room left on it, though that could be totally untrue.

Also, as a personal request, no more ridiculously pointless stages like the plankton-musical level or 75m.

Totally being :zeldamelee:.

Also, I think the next smash will have more females. Hopefully one of which will be Kumatora.

Pretty sure mostly everyone does.

I don't think the game needs to be "taken seriously." It's a game. That is fun. That's about all there is to videogames, do you enjoy them or not? I don't hate the tourney folks because they want to develop a certain community based on aspects that I disagree with. I hate the tourney folks because of what you said, they're trying to "take a game seriously." They should be able to play how they want, but not at the expense of people who don't want to play in the same way. I hope Smash 4 finds a way to make everyone happy. I won't be pitching a fit if Smash 4 doesn't play exactly like Brawl (because I actually enjoy it), but I'll embrace whatever new style is involved. I don't have to adhere to a rigid set of guidelines so that I can take a game seriously. I enjoy Brawl because I like playing as Nintendo characters against my friends, not because I "take the game seriously."

Being a competitive fighter and a party game aren't mutually exclusive. There should be no one element put to the forefront (Melee used the former, and Brawl, the latter), so of course folks who like the competitive side more are going to rip on Brawl. Unfortunately, fighting game fans feel the need to vindicate Smash as a fighting game, when that isn't the role it's supposed to take. I don't understand why Smash needs to be "considered worth existing" by other fighting game fans, as long as it's fun and embodies the spirit of Nintendo. Which is what it's supposed to be. It does take itself seriously: as a game that can appeal, with that familiar Nintendo magic, to every taste, every culture, and every creed. A game doesn't have to "take itself seriously" in regards to what fans think it should be to be a good game. Brawl proved that.

"Taking games seriously" is an oxymoron.

I feel what you are saying, though best scenario is that it's not like either, and is it's own standalone game. they can tone down the moon grvity feel, though.

indeed. they are planning on possibly ehnacing a new playstyle altogether, since Sakurai did state he's aiming to make it not just feel like a rehash with more characters and stages.

Ok, Ok, let me say this: WAVEDASHING IS NOT A GLITCH. in fact, it was put in to cover a glitch-there was an issue where sometimes if you airdodged too close to the stage you would fall through it and die(sometime still happend in Pokemon Stadium when the stage shifts) so they added the sliding effect to cover it. there.*phew*

I think being good at Smash Bros. Brawl and being good at Smash Bros. Melee are two different things. Melee is, in my opinion, a much harder game to become skilled at, and is that much more rewarding when I have.

I feel they should go for the Pokemon route of making it super-easy to do but being VERY deep-then everyone wins.

Clone characters should really be redone. Not Luigi, I mean, he's supposed to be really similar, but characters like Captain Falcon and Ganondorf? WTF? Why do these characters share the same move set?
agree on ganon. I feel they should do a 3rd option and maybe make him the Beast ganon from Classic Zeldas(?)

I feel like it is too late to redo Falco, but he should've been more different as well. I don't think it's too late to redo Wolf, though I usually forget that he is even a Smasher in the first place. :p

....Falco...was redone :/
de cloning Wolf, I wouldn't mind. though I feel Tink needs it most.

Mystery 7 you mean? but yeah, this game is going to be MUCH bigger, so I can expect features from all 3 to be in, though like I said, sakurai looks to bring brand new stuff to the table mostly.
Also, as a personal request, no more ridiculously pointless stages like the plankton-musical level or 75m.
this. Bring us N's castle and starship mario!

:phone:
I agree (if it wasn't obvious). I've talked to a lot of people around the interweb and the consensus is the same as Sakurai. Those other games feel like button mashers and just aren't fun.

I'd think you'd agree with me that any new feature added shouldn't be to make the game "more competitive," but more fun. It should add to the game in the same way Final Smashes did.

You act as if he should be crucified for liking a different series.

Come no, really? At least he's bringing new ideas to the table that at the same time would make Smash Bros look more like a competent fighting game and less of a party game.
First, you'll notice in my post I said something like postiung all the time about Street Fighter. This is a Smash Brothers forum. Talking about Black/White makes sense but not Street Fighter, or the other games. That's fanboy and that's mostly what I'm harping on. That, and he;s calling other people fanboys. If you dish it out, be ready to take it. Second, like I wrote above, I'm not against new things but that need to be fun and not so tourney people can make their tournaments more super cereal.

This. As I've said in the past, Smash Bros. has the biggest potential to be one of, if not the best fighting game out there thanks to its simplistic design that allows for an array of possibilities. Sakurai just needs to not suck at fighters so much (and I'm not talking about execution) and stop catering to scrubs so much to get the big picture. Besides, who WOULDN'T like the idea of following up their attacks instead of constantly having to chase the opponent? It's enough work as it is to land that first hit.
Yeah, except the point is for the game to be simple. Also, Sakurai said the point was to get away from combos that every fighting game clings to.

I love the Uprising Iwata Ask because now Kuma will make an uphill battle by saying Sakurai is wrong.

There's always been a debate in the FG communities whether or not Smash is a fighting game.
Hmm, I wonder what Wikipedia has to say about this debate.

Genre:Fighting. Argument over.

The reason FG fans do this is because they dont want Smash to be compared along side their game (or the other way around). It's obviously a fighting game. but thought sheer will they refuse to call it one. I have always thought it was jealousy of Smash. Smash gets far more attention from players and the media alike. When the Dojo was out, Smash dominated the airwaves. I remember when Pokemon Trainer was announced that 4Chan's /v/ had every post on the front page dedicated to it. No other fighting game gets close to this attention and gets ignored after an event. Most none FG sites are dedicated to other games.
I made an arguement for those who're judging B&W2 too soon. Click here to go to it.
Cool. I'll be sure to read it :)

So Smash should stop catering to scrubs. OK. What happens when those so-called scrubs decide to leave because they had a blind eye turned to them. Smash's success is due to them.

I'm just saying I'd rather have Smash be considered an actual choice as a fighter. To be embraced by more than just one community.
It is. It's talked about in every other community. Almost every forum has a Smash thread and people talk about it a lot, play it a lot and make fan art and music (I actually bought a remix CD from a Japanese studio. All Brawl music). Every Nintendo site will be talking about it when the trailer appears and others like NeoGAF and 4chan as well.

I used to hate the idea of Tingle being in Smash, but then I realized... this is a fighting game. So he'd make a perfect punching bag for me during my practice sessions! Same goes for pretty much everyone except Zoroark... the idea of him getting in is just... blegh

@asage94: Not much to say. You pretty much just said "Let's not judge it on a name." There is nothing wrong with that as it is a fine argument. Let's wait and see what the game will actually look like.

I do hope they extend the game. I loved Black and White, but it was one of the shorter games. Was a little silly as you really only just hit Lv 50 before it ends (G/s did this too, but you had Kanto soon after). One idea was flying to another region, which would defiantly help Black and White and would make more sense for catching Pokemon.

Does anyone else feel like Smash4 is going to have a lot of ladies, villains, and Smaller Franchises added? I feel like that makes up about 70% of everyone left to add.
No, unlike everybody else I do not believe Sakurai is going to fill the game with a bunch of smaller franchises. I still hold to the precedent that we will see 4-5 character driven new series in the next game, at the most

I also thought black and white was a little short, not to mention the easiest pokemon game in the main series for me.

@syrup Im telling you, they gotta put Kumatora in smash 4, and from f-zero I think samurai goroh would make a nice addition.

I agree (if it wasn't obvious). I've talked to a lot of people around the interweb and the consensus is the same as Sakurai. Those other games feel like button mashers *snip*
I'm sorry, what? Did we just go into a comedy tone or something? The other games are button mashers? Now you're just makin' me laugh.

No, really. Go ahead and tell me why do they feel like button mashers.

Hint: It's probably because you're not spending enough time actually learning how to ****in' play a proper fighting game so you have to bunch it to something that -- surprise, surprise -- only the scrubs do. Sounds accurate.

Honestly, you saying those fighting games are button mashers make me laugh and lose any hope of holding an intelligent debate with people like you.

Apart from Isaac, Saki, and even Starfy, probably not too much for the smaller franchises department.

In terms of females, I doubt that we'll get too much there. Palutena may be one new inclusion to keep in mind.

More villains is pretty much a must, since K. Rool and Ridley are begging to be playable. There is Black Shadow as well.
