Go for more shine spikes!!!

I'm bad at this, too. But watch KDJ's Fox and it makes more sense.

Understand, I'm not saying this because I think you don't know how to shine spike. It's because you aren't very aggressive. You tend to stay on the stage and fsmash, which is certainly not Fox's best option.

I'm extremely consistent at shine spikes, however I did my best to play as safe as possible.

Against space animals, I prefer to edge guard with smashes, and ledgehopped aerials. Vs characters with more limited options coming below, such as Marth, Falcon, Peach, etc, I tend to shine spike more often, however on stages like FD vs Falcon, Shine - Grab - Aerial, and Shine - Upsmash are generally the most safe, and efficient way of getting kos.

I still personally have problems shining fire fox, and fire bird. I'll get it eventually. ;[

Your Fox is pretty good Ruby.

I don't really want to post any comments besides that, though. I feel like if I point out crucial things you weren't doing, or things I saw that I felt should have been done differently, you'll give me a paragraph full of reasons for not doing them.

Something like:

"shinespike more, you didn't do it much in these matches",

being countered by:

"I'm extremely consistent with shine spikes"

shows me that you really aren't looking for advice. Sorry if I sounded like a prick. I honestly didn't mean it that way.

I'm always looking for advice, and I find it extremely insulting that someone of your caliber is withholding advice, when you clearly would be able to give me better advice than "SHINESPIKE MOAR LOLOLOL."

No offense to the person who posted that, but that post severely disappointed me. I was hoping for some detailed, deep response, and instead I get "SHINESPIKE MOAR." =\

I know I probably shouldn't defend myself when it comes to critique, but critique, such as "shine spike more.", and "Learn to SHDL" with Fox, and "Learn to reverse SHL" with Falco irritate me ****less.

I CAN SHDL. I DO Shinespike. I CAN, and DO reverse SHL.

I usually have good reasons why I didn't do the techniques, or maybe I just had an off day, and couldn't do them in THAT particular match.

Also; I hate it when people only watch one video. Also it always happens to be the video I played the worst in, and only further discredits me as a player, and gives a bad impression to would-be critics.

Now for something different;

Now that I'm done defending myself, I'd like to point out some errors I made, that others may point out:

Just about every roll, and spot dodge, when in shield, were supposed to be either Dair, or Wavedash out of shield. I just couldn't wavedash out of shield that day, or rather, the whole week, and it had cost me many opportunities for KOS.

There were also several opportunities for me to Usmash out of shield, and I did take the opportunities, but I messed up and either jumped, or rolled rather than doing the smash.

The random uairs should be obvious; failed jc grabs.

In the long run, these technical blunders didn't matter too much. I played as safe as I possibly could muster, and I'm consistent enough to follow up technical blunders most of the time against characters not named Peach.

I have a lot of Peach experience, however I still do bad against her. During crews, they tried several times to send me out against SV's Peach player, but I promptly refused each time, preferring to fight against spacies, falcon, or Marth.

you played well imo
you were playing conservatively which i can understand in a crew match but it's all we have to go on, and all i can say is that you should try being more aggressive.
try getting up videos that aren't crew battles so we can see your actual fighting style lol.

First match: Not even going to bother giving advice. That Falcon had no clue what he was doing. But you played very well though. Nice SHFFL aerial/shine/waveshine pressure.

Second match: When you up throw another Fox make sure you are facing the right way when up smashing. At 00:33 you just stood there and watched the Fox charge up his Up B above stage. You were close enough to simply run up to him and nair him out of the sky. When edge guarding another Fox get a little closer to the edge. In my opinion, you stand a little too far back, meaning you decrease your chances to bait/punish reactions from the player.

Thrid match: Man, these crew members you played really should watch vids and stuff. Anyway, you did the thing again around 2:22 where you watched a space animal charge their Up B above the level with you close by. Again, jump out and nair them. It seems you have a little trouble edge guarding Falco. Remember, forward tilts, down smashes, jabs and up tilts are perfect to counter the side B recovery. Bairs, down smashes, and shine spikes for the Up B recovery.

Didn't watch the fourth match. You have a solid Fox. Keep it up. :-)

Fourth Match isn't much to watch. I have little Samus experience, and since I lost to him in Singles, and having one stock left, I was VERY shaken.

I wait too much with Fox, regardless if I'm playing in Teams, Singles, or Crews, lol. I can't think as fast as I should, so I often freeze up. I'm getting better at it, but it's probably the most obvious problem I have, and is a common trend regarding comments on my videos.

Once Tee Aye Eye uploads my vids vs Forwards Falcon, and I upload my friendlies, there will be much more material to work on.

I didn't play any singles, or doubles tourney matches on the recording TV.

Oh well.

Updated with a new set. The first game was with Falco, featuring all kinds of 0 to deaths on both players parts.

good **** ruby, I like your fox a lot actually

you're really smart most of the time, and you have very good move choice. good fundamentals, which is probably the most important part of playing fox.

I liked how you didn't try to be overly flashy, which will get you killed.
Like vs forward, 2nd match, when you did that pressure on the first stock, I was impressed

What to work on--
try to think on your feet faster. Forward was able to control the pace of the match really easily because you didn't get out of bad positions fast enough. For example, in the first match, at 50 seconds you should've seen sean crouching and expected the downtilt, then changed your recovery or tried to sweetspot it or shorten your illusion.

You have a couple bad habits--I noticed a lot of spot dodges and random rolls when you were being pressured--but as long as you focus on eliminating them, they shouldn't hold you back for very long.

Don't run away all the time, either; fox is a good character, so look for times where you can be fast to get the jump on your opponent and turn the momentum around in your favor. If you can manage to play with confidence, then things will get a lot easier for you.

edit: forgot to mention, do you jc grabs with up on the analog + z?
if you do, try with x or y + z, that would probably be a lot easier lol

Thanks for the feedback. I will admit, I'm not the most confident player. Especially against better players. I get intimidated easily, which really affects how I play. Forward doesn't intimidate me as much as he used to when I first started to play against him. Or to be more specific, certain characters of his intimidate me less than others. His Falco, and Falcon are more manageable match-ups for me, than for example, his Fox, or Shiek.

Usually the random rolls are failed wave dashes out of shield, and usually the random spot dodges are failed aerials out of shield, or shine out of shield. I've gotten better at it since when those sets were recorded. I will admit that I still have problems with it occasionally.

IMO the two biggest problems with Fox are one, like you mentioned, I don't think on my feet as fast as I probably should be able to.

And two: My movement isn't nearly as good as it should be. I often freeze up. Especially when attempting to laser, I often stand there for one or two full seconds, which obviously gets me hit. Another problem that happens, but on a lesser scale is getting ahead of myself, or more speficically, press a sequence of buttons in the wrong order. Some examples would be dropping off the ledge, then illusioning to my death. Or dropping off a platform to my death, rather than jumping and doing an aerial.

I JC grab with Up+Z. I'm not sure how much Y+Z would help. It would take me quite a while to get used to the change.

Ruby you've gotten better. :) When Falcon jabs you, CC and shine him -> something gay. Or CC and buffer into shield and roll to escape pressure. Almost anything is better than sitting there and taking the hits.

I don't ever CC, and I really need to start. XD

I'm uploading 10 full VHS all full of melee. Tournaments, and friendlies alike. I'll have loads more videos of my Fox up.

I picked up Marth, and Falcon semi-sorta. I'm still debating on whether or not to serious play them, but I'm always looking for critique regardless.

Look forward to them sometime between saturday, and monday

I watched some of the matches.

In general, you need to work on your defensive game. For example, use reactive tech/get up. Watch what your opponent is doing before you decide how to get up. If they are running around you, you may want to use get-up-attack.

I see that you are trying to play safe, but it seems that a lot of times, you pick a bad time to run in and attack (basically, it seems like you're running into moves).

Vs falcon in general, try your best not to let him space on you. Falcon's properly spaced nair will beat most of your moves (though you probably know that already). If you positioned for an up-tilt, then do it.

Obviously grab as much as possible. Everyone knows to do this, but watching matches, a lot of people in general don't use that advice, though it's one of the most basic pieces of advice and gameplay. My main example, is vs forward. There were a lot of grab opportunities for you, but you didn't take them. Since you were on battlefield, you can easily throw him up, then up-air -> another move, way more often then you did.

Last thing, if you absolutely can, try and gimp then if you both are close to the ledge. Obviously, don't rely on it as your sole strategy, otherwise people will just camp you back.

Your movement, and offensive game seems pretty good. But seriously, don't get hit.

Edit: Also, CC is broken. Doing it into up-smash/shine/grab is sooo good.

I have a bit more advice for whatever it's worth:

- Try your best not to be above your opponent. Attacking from above is generally bad. If you can help it, drop down, then WD away from him, then try your approach again.

- Running in and shining as a mix-up is really good. Don't Waveshine toward the opponent, unless you actually hit them. Pillar / full jump away / WD back (sometimes) / JC grab / shine are all really good.

- When your opponent is above you, attack as much as possible. Try and force them on a platform, while trying to hold your ground.

ooh. RaynEX used to do that a lot whenever we practiced. I dunno how he got over it......probably practiced it for hours. He always does that, to apply tactics to his game.

For me, I usually just pick stuff up with consistency in like 2 mins. It's a weird.

It's one of the only things I didn't like immediately learn how to do consistently, along with wave dashing backward out of shine. I'm getting much better at it, especially with Flaco, but it's decently hard with Fawks.

For the longest time with both characters, I always turned around, and stood there helpless. I got much better at it around January, when I started playing again.

I'm sorry for the arguments I caused in the match-up threads. I really appreciate the critique. <3

ouch. I odered a controller before ROM, but it came in the wednesday after the tourney.

All the bracket matches I lost were due to being unable to laser.........I did side-b off of the stage whenever I tried to.

Once I got this controller, I beat kage and Vwins in a tourney in quebec. The next tourney that I went to with them, I didn't have the controller and periodically SD'd vs them........so yeah, I lost again.

Edit: The vids where I lost to Kage and Vwins are recorded, but they haven't been put up still.

but yeah, enough rambling. A new controller will cost a lot. it was $35 (CAN [$29.99 + shipping / handling]) for me. Controllers are normally $20. Also, they only had silver in stock, which was kind of gay.

RaynEX, Kirbykaze, and I each got a controller. RaynEX sold his to PKM Vodka though.

Try to find idiot friends with old controllers that are barely used. That's the way to go IMO. New controllers I find to be so >_>

Silver controllers are 24.99$ USD. White controllers (WHICH ****ING SUCK.) are 35$ USD.

So yeah. I spent 35$ on a white controller, which broke in two months.

*Edit.*

My controller broke half-way through a round robin I'm hosting. :\

*Edit again.*

I had a bunch of old controllers. i messed around with the different motherboards, and took parts from various controllers, and fashioned together a decent fox controller. =D

lol, I tried that. It failed me in those sets vs kage and Vwins (and whoever else I played that day). It was the one I used at pound 3. The L-button literally shattered inside when I was playing zelgadis in pools (basically I ***** him the first game, then games 2 and 3 I had to play with no L-cancel / full shield / Wavedash / airdodge, so I barely lost, since he managed to gimp me at the end).

I replaced the L-button, but now it sucks and the control stick inputs to the right when I don't want it to (basically, nair = fair / u-air = fair / Dash cancel shine = illusion / SHL = illusion half the time, or it doesn't turn around....). I thought it was me at first, but then when I use different controllers, it instanly stopped happening again.

I want a fox controller, but it's so hard to put together / break in.

I sold my fox controller, lol.

I'll probably have two brand-new silver controllers by the end of the week. I plan on designating one controller to be only Falco, and the other to be primarily Fox, but still probably use it for Shiek/Marth/Falcon

I still have a old purple controller.

The grip rings on my joystick have worn away. But I can still play well, though.

The idea of switching to silver makes me cringe. >.<

Maybe it isn't bad, I dunno. lol
