I usually see Palutena as a medium to long range magic user. (A heavier and longer ranged Zelda, you could say.)

It all comes to gameplay needs.

For example, look back at Ike being added to Brawl. Ike was most certainly never a slow character in Path of Radiance, but they made him slow and strong in Smash Bros to fit a gameplay niche. That was strange at first, but I don't think anyone was upset they made that decision for the sake of offering a new experience. Palutena is even further open to interpretation. There are a few things I couldn't see her doing. For example, while I don't think she necessarily has to be slow, I have a hard time seeing her being super agile and walljumping and stuff. Aside from that it is basically looking at what kind of gameplay Smash bros doesn't have, and fitting Palutena into the picture as needed.

On a personal level, I would want some focus on her shield. Unless I am missing something, no one in Smash Bros really uses the shield as a weapon, and I feel there are a lot of gameplay implications that could be a part of the product. I made a Valkyrie moveset a few days ago with some of my ideas. Of course it all can't be applied to Palutena, but it just shines some light on the possibilities. All the same, I am just fine with something completely different. Even with Samus, Link and Mega Man, there is certainly more room for more projectile-focused fighters.

The shield is something that I doubt they'll utilize. Smash has a habit of making a counter down B and calling it a day.

I'd like her to fight mainly with her staff using magic for long range but whacking her enemies with her staff and her shield being tossed at enemies would be epic. What about her claws? She uses them in the anime.

Her magic are made of light but she can also summon rain and maybe throw in few vegetables for comic relief.

I'd rather we not see too many references to the anime special.

Vegetables? I'll pass. Throwing Floor Ice Cream may work. It would do decent damage to most characters... and heal Pit.

Wolf Claws entail speed, and personally I don't want Palutena to be a fast-type character.

I really feel it fits more her style to not move around much and spam light attacks to control space. Then if someone gets close, shield or staff to the face.

Agreed, I've always imagined her to have a similar fighting and movement style to that of Zelda due to them both being primarily magic casters (although I think Palutena levitating for her running animation suits her better than actually running on foot).

Hello there. I've been reading these forums for a while, and decided to sign up and add that I'd support Palutena for Smash 4.

Glam Blaster would be awesome. Especially if she makes a humorous little quip about it before she does the attack.

Eh... the Glam Blaster is just another laser. I wouldn't mind it, but it wouldn't be anything special.

I could see a highly buffed version of Palutena's Army working... call in some Centurian Strongarms and let lose.

Never liked that centurian final smash though, it's definitely one of the least interesting Final Smash attacks.

Personally, I'd like it if she pulled out a Skyscrapper Club and started shooting it all over the place.

Alternatively, if Sakurai wanted to reference the OVA, Palutena could always use the Wolf Claws as a Final Smash.

I hope if she's a newcomer that she's essentially somewhat of a female version of Ike, not a clone but only by being a slow but strong fighter. She could be the slowest female character but also the strongest to balance her.

Here's another possible moveset for Palutena:

B: Summon Centurion. Paluntena summons a member of her army into battle, the Centurion will appear above Palutena and fly diagonally downwards in front of her. Afterwards the Centurion will be AI controlled and move around the field for several seconds attacking nearby enemies. Palutena has a 90% chance to summon a regular Centurion that walks around and can shoot arrows at a short-medium distance and a 10% chance to summon a Centurion Knight which hovers around a specific radius and attacks enemies with its halberd.

B>: Power of Caging. This ability is from the anime short, Palutena shoots out a cage with an open gate that can be slightly controlled like Zelda's Din's Fire. Upon contact she deals damage to the enemy and traps them in the cage, the B button can be released and the caged enemy will continue to accelerate in a direction or it can be held to control where the caged enemy will be taken. Caged enemies must deal damage to the cage based on how far it has traveled with a maximum 25% damage to the cage in order to break free, it will be treated like a platform so enemies who break free of the cage are granted all of their jumps (The longer it travels the weaker the cage).

B^: Veil of Light. Palutena surrounds herself in pillars of light that revolve around her. For a few seconds Palutena will levitate in a given direction with these pillars of light continuously spinning around her.

Bv: Orbs of Light. Upon activation Palutena summons three orbs of light that spin in a small radius above her. These orbs will continue to float above her until the timer runs out or until she activates Bv again in which the three orbs will fire out and attempt to home in at the closest enemy. Enemies can also be damaged by the revolving orbs but will cost Palutena one orb per impact.

Final Smash: Palutena's Army?

Palutena calls out her army and summons Centurions (Walk around shooting one arrow at a time), Centurion Knights (Hovers around an area while swinging a halberd), and Centurion Strongarms (Walks back and forth between a small distance and will dash towards and enemy to pummel them).

However during the summoning Palutena trips and stumbles and accidentally tosses out one of her growth potions which spills on the ground in front of her. Afterwards various cycloptic vegetables chaotically scramble across the battlefield among the Centurions while occasionally throwing kitchenware like knives, plates, and pans.

Palutena then uses the Power of Maelstrom to reduce the sentient vegetables into regular vegetables while calling her army to withdraw. At this point various vegetables will be scattered across the battlefield which can be picked up to recover health.

Hmm...I think I'll try my hand at a Special set.

Neutral Special: Light Orbs
Palutena raises her hand above her head as photons gather into a small ball of light. It gains power depending on the length of the charge. Afterwards, the ball of light (or three, if fully charged) is shot forward at the opponent. It can be shot diagonally, as well.

Side Special: Centurion Charge
Palutena calls in a Centurion from off-screen and commands it to charge forward. It has its own AI similar to Dedede's Waddle Dees, but packs a bit of a punch. Luckily, the foe can defeat them, as they have limited health. They attack the opponent by ramming them. There is also a small chance that a Centurion Strong-Arm comes in, which does twice as much damage and has more health. There can only be two Centurions per Palutena on the stage at one time.

Up Special: Wolf Claws
Palutena quickly pulls out the Wolf Claws that she used in the OVA and gets sent upwards while slashing. This does burn damage.

Down Special: Column of Light
Palutena calls down a column of light from the heavens, similar in look to Pikachu's Thunder attack. However, this is a beam of sparkling light that surrounds Palutena. The column stays on the stage for about ten seconds, and you can only have one out at a time. However, if an opponent is caught in the light, they slowly take damage, as they are "unworthy" of the holy light. Palutena, however, can reduce her damage by staying in the light.

Final Smash: Glam Blaster
A relatively simple Final Smash that involves Palutena shooting a large horizontal light column across the bottom of the stage, and then the top. Think of it like one of Magalor's moves from Return to Dreamland.

I don't know. I thought this would be cool.

I laugh a little each time someone mentions Palutena using Centurions as one of her specials, because I imagine it as a similar fashion to the way Dedede tosses his minions and I picture her just carelessly throwing the Centurions around everywhere, including the giant Strongarms. But yes, I like your specials, but I think her FS could be something more unique since there are a couple of giant laser FS's already, but that could just be me. Also, I find it so strange this thread doesn't get a lot of activity, especially when the polls indicate that Palutena is a very wanted newcomer.

I'm having fears that Palutena will become part of a new Disappointment trifecta. The ones in Brawl were Ridley, Bowser Jr. and Krystal. This time I fear it may be Ridley (again), Palutena and an unknown third.

Generally, Palutena's one of those characters that despite having a larger fan base, the fan base is usually pretty quiet. Not entirely sure why.

Probably because there is some realistic expectations in the likelyhood that she may or may not make it in for a number of reasons, if she makes it in great, but I don't think anyone is going to go into a frenzy like with certain other characters as of late. A level of scope that is held and the like.

I do share your fears about her being overlooked like the 3 you mentioned for Brawl since Sakurai AFAIK has used pre-Brawl popularity data to determine his roster choices and for this reason, I don't expect her to be playable (I'm just keeping my expectations low to avoid disappointment). As for the unknown third one for SSB4, I personally think it's King K. Rool.

Isaac was part of the Disappointment Trifecta in Brawl, wasn't he?

Depends. Isaac was one of the characters we didn't understand not being in. But in terms of Bowser Jr., if we discount the rabid hate from koopaling fans, He was a major antagonist and no-one expected a series to LOSE characters. We all thought he would replace Dr. Mario.

If worse happens he'll be the currently unknown third.

Well, I think it's still a bit early to throw in the towel. It's true that Sakurai probably used pre-Brawl data to determine most of the roster, but I doubt he's going to use said data for all the characters given the Wii Fit Trainer's inclusion. Let's assume for a moment that Sakurai chose to take some time off after Kid Icarus Uprising was released to think of the finalized character roster and came up with it in July or August of last year, like how Brawl's roster was more or less finalized in July of 2005. It would be enough time for the Japanese fans to get in a few requests for Palutena, if Chronobound's research on the matter of the most wanted characters is to be taken into account. That, and if Sakurai takes any suggestions from the top 5 most requested characters over there currently, then Palutena has a decent shot since she's the most wanted of the Nintendo newcomers if you take out Mewtwo and Roy due to being Melee veterans.

Well she's behind Ridley, King K. Rool, Little Mac, Krystal and Bowser Jr. but when you consider that they still have the residual brawl hype behind them that's damn impressive.

What poll are you looking at for those facts?

Palutena was easily one of my favorite characters in Kid Icarus: Uprising.
I can see her being very unique, with slow moving magic projectiles and the fact that she will probably be the only heavyweight girl in the game.
She definitely has my support.

A thought occurred to me. If Palutena got into Smash 4 and turned out she was a clone of Zelda like Wolf is to Fox, how would you react?

I would be very disappointed, but since she doesn't switch between 2 characters, they would still feel pretty different.
Palutena would probably be slower, stronger, and bigger than Zelda though, so even if a clone, she wouldn't feel so much like one.

It's been a while since I've been in this sweet thread, so let me play catch up.

Palutena needs to wear these before getting out her glam blaster.

It'd fit better if she has that as one of her taunts. <3

I'll think of a moveset later. I hope it'll work well when it's done. Also, I'm very sure she won't be like Zelda, even by semi-clone standards. I'm sure she'll be around in the game 1 shape or form if anything. Based on what we know so far bout Smash4 when it comes to the KI universe, the first item that was revealed was Kid Icarus Uprising's X-bomb (revealed on August 16, which coincidentally was my B-day), and the first stage was the Reset Bomb Forest currently known for the 3ds version. So now I wonder what's the next KI-related thing to be shown. Could be new Pit animation, more of the Reset Bomb Forest, and more.

Nonetheless, I still have faith in Palutena. Game's still in early development, plenty of time. But if they're doing character reveals based on certain events like what they did with Olimar and Luigi, I'd predict Palutena's time would be around 3/22 or 3/23 of next year as a celebration of Kid Icarus Uprising's 2-year anniversary around that time.

MattX20 was refering to this thread on GameFAQs where Chronobound (under the name Snakey) gave us his observations on what characters the Japanese fanbase wants in SSB4 based on what he saw on various websites, blogs and forums:

I used to be on the fence for Palutena but after seeing some of these sweet movesets I'm all for her. The problem is that I think Sakurai might be too humble with her similiar to King Dedede and Meta Knight thus he won't add her in. The other problem I see is that he may think Kid Icarus may not even be in need of another fighter (Pit seems to have adapted Uprising into his moveset to represent the newest game and now the series is on hiatus!). I also think that it is possible that Sakurai may reduce her to only codecs. So as for Palutena, the only things I think she has going for her are popularity and potential uniqueness.

God. Forbid.

I already barely have coped with the Ridley thing. I don't know if I'd be able to respect the decision to keep Palutena out of this game.
And I agree that K. Rool would be the unknown third. I see him and Ridley becoming the forever wanted characters of Smash unless Sakurai demonstrates evidence of the opposite.
