Anyway, today's picture DID told us something.
It reiterated that Toad is not going to be playable. If you go back to the picture Sakurai released for Mario 3D World's launch, you'll see that the Toad in Peach's hands still had Brawl's polygons, in fact it stood out too much. Now, it's far less noticeable.
My point is: Sakurai is not going to upgrade Toad's look just to scrap him later and make him a playable character.
It's time to move on guys, Toad isn't happening.

While the Direct itself isn't really exciting, this is the first time that Sakurai has publicly acknowledged a Direct in an update thereby linking the Direct with Smash. That has led to much of the hype IMO. But of course, most people ok this thread hypes if he posts a picture of his kitties.

I'm normally average when it comes to hyping but I'm looking forward to this Direct soley due to his comment. If nothing is revealed, I think it will do more harm than good.

Perhaps you are merely implying that the notion of Christmas is not significant enough to Sakurai, so naturally he will dismiss the premise and decide... to not reveal anything despite us not having anything since the random Marth reveal during early November.

I am sure you are correct. Now would be the best possible Direct to skip valid information regarding the game (especially considering that he actually alluded to the Direct in the Daily Pic). This is the same as every other Direct for some arbitrary reason.

How is it that you're completely missing what I'm actually saying even though you stated it yourself at the same time? What I'm saying isn't that big of a puzzle or even on a grand scale, nor does it have anything to do with the gaming industry.

I'm just saying you guys are a bunch of nuts for getting your hopes up so high again. XD

Yes, I figured as much. Essentially you are stating that you aren't expecting anything as there isn't much of a correlation between Christmas and the Direct (which would make sense... if it wasn't the entire reason they were having a holiday direct that is). Maybe there isn't a reveal, but now would certainly be the time to do it. That much is clear. However, I tend to agree. I wouldn't necessarily give Sakurai the benefit of the doubt when it comes down to it, he might be as incompetent as I like to pretend he is.

Perhaps I should rephrase my sentiment, Sakurai would be wise to reveal something as it has been quite awhile since the last reveal and Christmas is a week away. He gave us something for Halloween (costumes), so it would be a great idea if he continued the trend on Jesus' B-Day Bash. Again, he also alluded to this in his tweet, but knowing Sakurai, he probably already forgot.

See, this shows that we agree on one thing.

If there's any time there should be a big reveal, it's now. Seriously, with the spot Nintendo is in right now anyway, they don't have room to be holding anything back. It's time to pull out all of the stops and show people what they wanna see so they can reel in the dough.

However, Sakurai has a bad habit of not doing the thing he needs to do and doing whatever he feels like instead. A bad habit that's going to bite him in the ass eventually if he keeps it up. And I seriously want to see that happen to way it basically has to Tetsuya Nomura for the BS he's been pulling for the past 10 years. ¦3

Now we are on the same page, I understand that angle. In fact; I completely and utterly agree, I also want to see it happen. It is a scenario of should versus would.

Should Sakurai reveal something? Obviously.

I also highly doubt we will get anything for Christmas. Christmas in Japan is just not as big as it is in the West like the States or Canada. Most Japanese don't equate Christmas = special. Most just view it as any other day with an added bonus. Kids even have to go to school (teaching on Christmas sucked!).

But Christmas is becoming more widely recognized and larger here. Each year, stores have more Christmas sales, houses have more decorations, and you hear more Christmas music. This below picture is a street near my house. Two years ago, it didn't have these lights. Last year was the first year.

So I doubt we will get any reveal or surprise from Sakurai. Like Dedede. We might get a Merry Christmas from him but nothing special.

These are all the pictures featuring Toad. I don't see a difference really. You know, they still can go and make the blue/yellow Toad from the newer Mario games playable, and keep the original in Peach's move. I sure as hell don't want to cause Toad sucks, he should stay in the Kart/Party series, I was so confused when the yellow and blue one went playable. Toads suck.

The wait for a newcomer has been a long time, but keep in mind that there was pretty much a total Brawl news drought between E3 06 and the second trailer in December 06. ♪

And even then, we only got Fox as a returning veteran. The Brawl stages shown in the trailer were more interesting, to be honest.

Here, we've been getting slow but steady veteran, stage, and item reveals during the same time periooood. ♪♫

I didn't know that... After all I wasn't even into gaming back then (now I'm ONLY into gaming though), so I did not follow the Brawl updates at the time.
Still, even if we get no newcomers, I expect at least SOMETHING smash related, because of the Pic of the Day. Let's just hope Sakurai isn't trolling us...
