It's probably just something simple like holding down L when you select the stage.Really hoping we get informed on what exactly causes the stage to switch between it's two different appearances.

Well, there's spotlights pointing at the characters from many different angles. It's only natural that the shadows go off on different angles too.I still think the shadows look really odd on this stage... not that I really care...

You can select the version you want by holding down L or R before selecting the stage. I'm sure the default is Little Mac's stage.
