Wait, why would Pkmn Trainer get the axe? He's extremely unique.
And he's the main character of one of the most iconic and well known Nintendo games. Pikachu might be the mascot of Pokemon, but I bought a Gameboy when I was 9 so I could play as Red.

The time of balancing him is that of balancing multiple characters, so he's the most efficient cut time-wise.

You see, balancing Pokemon Trainer takes multiple combinations of characters into account:

ABC (Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Squirtle together)
AB (Squirtle and Ivysaur)
AC (Squirtle and Charizard)
BC (Ivysaur and Charizard)
A (Squirtle)
B (Ivysaur)
C (Charizard)

So instead of Pokemon Trainer taking the time to balance of three separate characters, he takes the time of seven. (Rather than having three characters each balanced individually against each other character in the cast, you have to take every combination of those three characters and balance them together against the rest of the cast.)

So, if Pokemon Trainer was cut, you'd be getting time that's comparable to cutting seven separate characters (or six if Charizard remains). If you have to choose between multiple characters and Pokemon Trainer, Pokemon Trainer's cut makes a lot of sense.

That's a pretty excellent reasoning on why he would get cut. However, I'd argue that the Subspace Emissary seems like something way more taxing in terms of development, combined with Pkmn Trainer. Since there's no Subspace in Smash 4, that dev time to balance the 3 characters is still possible.

Or that dev time may be put into other aspects, such as newcomers, a modified stage builder, HD trophies, etc..

I'm not saying he's a definite cut by any means, but he certainly makes a lot of sense if you're looking at it from the development team's point of view.

Question is...

Does Sakurai see him as worth that much time?

I think he does. And considering PT will take much less time to make this time, I think they can do it.

I feel that it's a bit too soon to call Yoshi tomorrow, so I'm not gonna hype myself up for anything.

Me may very well. I'd give Pokemone Trainer at least a 40% chance of returning and Charizard an 80% chance of returning in some form.

As much time as Pokemon Trainer may take to develop, it's three characters in one. All three of them being important and notable as the very first Pokemon starters (albeit, each in a different evolution in this case) and Charizard happens to be among the more popular Pokemon.

I think Sakurai would see PT is unique and important enough overall to keep.

Anyway, hoping for a character reveal to make a great end to this week.

I'd be deeply saddened if R.O.B was cut. He was such a bizarre and stupid character choice but my God was he fun to play, he had amazing air normals, and the guy was a spacing demon.

On a semi-unrelated note, I recently picked up Super Mario RPG for the SNES, so I'll probably end up becoming a Geno supporter once everything's said and done.

Has anybody thought of the possibility of Pokemon Trainer with 6th gen starters? Any chance that happens?

Speaking of veteran reveals, I personally wouldn't count Pokemon Trainer as three separate ones in this case (even if Sakurai does think it like that), because it would be weird to show just one Pokemon at a time... or maybe that's just me? And who knows if his Pokemon will change anyway. ZSS and Sheik work as separate reveals though.

Yeah I think design-wise Sakurai sees the 3 Pokemon as needing to play together, where as Samus/ZSS and Zelda/Sheik have no need to ever switch out if the player doesn't want to.

Otherwise he'd have excluded the stamina system and wouldn't force the switch on KO's.

Well, seems that it is interesting news, so I guess the dock was part of the stage after all!
I'm liking the setup of the stage, where the tree counts as platforms, though I don't get what the water's for.
Now we wait for next week. Oh Yoshi, we wait…

Is that the normal camera position? I don't know, it's like... isometric? Like Zelda Between Worlds more than Smash Bros.
The stage looks OK, nothing special about it to be honest.
Reminds more of Mario Kart for some reason.

I guess it's okay. It beats the Dedede pic for sure.

Rough translation for the 2nd pic is:

"Oh nice weather. This stage, there is a feature that, changing the placed randomly each time you visit. Do not you not again and again."

In other words, the stage changes each time we pick it iirc.

Actually, we got more 3DS pics than Wii U this week. That's a first, huh?

Secret second pic

Squiggly lines.
Sounds like it translates to "The stage layout randomizes."

Pic of the day. Here's a new stage for the 3DS version: Tortimer Island! I've been here countless times to catch bugs.
In the comments:
What a beautiful day. On this stage, fighters are randomly placed on a different island layout every time they visit. Yar, come back anytime, will ye?

Well I guess he doesn't think it's particularly worth explaining the angle or anything? Haha, weird but I guess it's cool. Seems to be a walk off though...

That's awesome. Kapp'n, Tortimer, Leilani all making some cameos. Oh, I really wish I had New Leaf.

Interesting. Except not for me, I don't like AC.

So the stage is called Tortimer Island. I'm not sure what to feel about the camera angle.

Okay NOW the comment pic shows up for me haha. So it's a random layout every time? That's kinda neat haha.

From the second pic I guess the first one was a panoramic one to get the whole stage in one shot, then. The second is much much more detailed and actually looks like a good stage. But still I don't get how the actual walkable platforms are designed. Is there a jump between the shore and the grass?

Maybe you can run up the slope?

Is this the same Animal Crossing stage we've already seen on the 3DS or a second one? If it's the same one, could it be that you travel back and forth and keep geting different random islands? I'm kinda unclear about this, and I don't really know anything about Animal Crossing.
