http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=243829

That's the tournament I'm going to this weekend.

Some fantastic players are going, including a lot of Michigan people and basically all of Ohio. I'm super hyped up for this tournament, so hyped that I've planned a 3$ MM against the 2nd best Diddy in the MW and I've heavily advertised in multiple threads.

As a side note/rant, this is the point where I talk about the Midwest's skill. The Midwest is an often overlooked region simply because only Michigan travels out of state. I'm almost certain that a lot of our top Ohioan players as well as some players in the western half of the MW are able to compete at a national level. The Midwest is actually pretty unique outside of MI IMO because out of all regions we possess the highest level of players that are on the cusp of being AMAZING and just need a little push with some out of state competition that they can't always access due to school and other commitments. This means that the mid-level player that isn't at any sort of cusp is going to suffer GREATLY in the Midwest for anywhere from 5-8 tournaments simply due to the pools-based seeding we have in the MW. As another note, although some people believe that the Midwest is hurt by a janky stage list, I have to say that it doesn't actually hurt us that bad. It forces us to play really hard on game 1, which basically forces our hand at the neutral. It's a unique strength (i.e. stage adaptability out of neutrals) that may only work in our region, but nevertheless it's a strength.

Anyways, back to my issue...

Here's the problem:

No death pools, and DEATHLY POOLS.

With only 10 full setups for ~50 people, pool size is likely to be small. Michigan ALONE basically reserves one spot in the pool, and Ohio's Finest reserves another in the pool. This means I only have 1-2 spots to aim at.

I don't get very much practice at all...I don't own a Wii, so the only real practice I get is twice a month. I'm known as a very smart player by many that can't coordinate his reactions or his play with his mind (in other words, I have untapped potential). I don't have a chance to practice for this weekend. I'm confident that this will be the weekend where it all changes but, still, I have to plan for the case that it doesn't...don't I?

In a previous blog I addressed several issues with my play, which I have corrected in part. However, due to low tournament attendance and practice in general, I seem to work on these habits separately but can never put all of the fixes together.

It's going to be tough...I don't know whether I can do it, or how I can boost myself to do it. I have an iPod, I'm going to get some Reese's and Hershey's Cookies 'n Cream bars on Thursday or Friday (my senzu beans)...

Comments/thoughts/motivations/advice? Pierce, some help from you would be nice...anybody with experience. HELP!

I know what you mean. I have never been to a tournament before, but I know that once I go and get some experience, I will be amazing! You have to believe in yourself. That is really all you need. Don't get upset or dismayed if you have a top level player in your pool. Don't stress yourself out. Tell yourself that you will win and that you will do whatever it takes to accomplish your goal. Goodluck @ the tournament, you got this! I wish I could go >_<

Thanks for the encouragement XD;

Hopefully I'll get a nicer pool and hopefully I'm at peak condition on that day.

Play lots of friendlies, and don't get discouraged if you lose. Also, watch lots of videos to get familiarized with all the norms of play. Study characters you have difficulty against/ask me.

All the tourney norms (eat, sleep, shower, smell nice, etc) all make a huge difference. Being physically prepared is SOOOOOOOOOOO important when going into the match.

Always expect that your opponent is at the same exact skill level you are. Don't assume you're better, or you'll get surprised. Don't assume you're worse, or you think that you're fighting a losing battle, when you're actually fighting a neutral one. Just ignore the name, and focus on the characters on the screen.

Pierce's comments are always legit.

Hm, even if you don't play much, get there early and friendly your azz off. I'm going to HOBO this Saturday, and haven't played Brawl in a few weeks, but since I'm riding with Xyro, were probaly gonna get there early and I'ma be up that Wii allll day. :)

But yeah. Basically all what Pierce said.

POOL 5:

Lain - Infern Angelis - clowsui - Wangston - Chuee - Bead - Markeyman -

v. Lain 1-2
v. Infern Angelis 0-2
v. Wangston 2-1
v. Chuee 2-0
v. Bead 2-0
v. Markeyman 2-0

BRACKETS:

R1 v. Count (who I mm'd earlier in the day) 1-2
LB R1 v. Beegs (HM on OH PR, could've probably won if I didn't switch to Falco + Japes game 2) 0-2

MMs:

Count - 0-3 (G1 G2 close)

FRIENDLIES:

Won about 70%.

All of my games were extremely close during this tournament. I'm pretty happy with myself, since I don't really go to tournaments that often + don't have a Wii but I'm still able to be very very close to winning. Obviously I'm upset about losing but it's just a difference in experience.

More once results are posted.
