Halo has a thread. The Legend of Zelda has a thread. Hell, even Mario Kart has a thread.

What about Metroid? Seriously.

This series has some of the greatest games the video game industry's ever seen, and yet it has little to no recognition on this board at all.

I, for one, love this series, and it's my favorite Nintendo franchise. It's a shame to see its popularity fade so rapidly.

Thankfully, there are fans like these that keep the spirit alive

Got a question? Theory? Some speculation? Go ahead and post it! It's a Metroid thread for a reason!

Gah, I suppose. There's a general "Zelda" thread because there's always the biweekly "what's your favorite Zelda game?!" or "what's your favorite Zelda song?!" threads. The Halo series and the Mario Kart games each have independent threads for each game. Whatever though.

I wish MP3 had WFC multiplayer...OR ANYTHING! I love the storyline seeing as previous games's stories are: "Samus has crash landed. GET OFF THE PLANET WHILE SAVING THE NATIVES!".

The bosses were too easy.

Sigh...MP3 was such a dissapointment boss-wise, especially Dark Samus. She was so powered up by phazon in the fight at the end of mp2, then when she's on an entire planet of the stuff....she's weaker than in mp2? What?

And they probably didn't include any multiplayer because there were a fair few reviews who actually marked them down for the multiplayer in mp2. It wasn't the best, but it was fun and enjoyable, and was a nice extra, so why should they get marked down for it because it wasn't halo 2? :/

It's sylux's ship, anyone that played MP:H and payed(sp?) attention would know that...

anyway I was hoping MP3 would have multiplayer ala Metroid hunters, with those controls it would have been SICK...

I really liked Mp3, tough the boses were a tad easy, the hardest one IMO is gangrayda, I couldnt do **** when she was doing those flips T-T

tough I hope they bring a 2d or at least a 3rd person perspective metroid, I want metroid to be as awesome as it was in the 90s...

Metroids my fav series by far, I effin love what they did to the hunters in the trophies in brawl, weavel looks sick, so does sylux...

IMO Metroid prime 1 was the best of the primes, simply because it was the one with more metroid feel, the isolation and all, metroid prime 3 kinda killed that cause u could communicate with the AUs *coughmotherbrainscough*, the general, troopers, ur ship... u didnt feel alone like in super metroid and such... I didnt like metroid prime 2 that much, the dark world was boring and simply didnt like it, thank god for dark samus, she was the only thing I found awesome in that game...

I remember my friend being so anti-Halo, instead of saying 'y halo thar' he would go 'y metroid thar'.

I've tried out Metroid Prime 3 when my friend brought it over, and it was really fun. Truthfully though, it was my first Metroid game since I've never really been one for Metroid in the past. It just wasn't appealing to me.

Recently though, another friend of mine sent over some Super Metroid, and I've been playing that on and off. It's pretty enjoyable, but it hasn't really dragged me in quite yet.

Wasn't there an early screen of multiplayer in Corruption back in 2006? I'm pretty sure there was.

Anyway, I agree on the multiplayer part. They could've made it even better by adding the other hunters in and giving them their special abilities.

Dark Samus was also a major disappointment. Gandrayda was more of a challenge (and definitely more fun to fight), and I beat her on my first try, too. Though Mogenar takes the cake for being the most annoying boss.

Oh, and for people who lurk around this thread:

DON'T DO THAT! I WAS EMOTIONALLY SCARRED BY THAT THING!

I also agree with the multiplayer part. I would have loved to swing ice rocks at people, as Noxus was nowhere near as awesome as Rundas.

Super Metroid = Best Metroid game EVER.

Seriously.

Also, for the fans, I seriously recommend Metroid2002 for some serious gaming involved in the metroid series. Speed runs, low percent runs, any percent runs, etc etc.

I have a 10% run (Hard mode) on Metroid Zero Mission. Took me forever to do, especially the perfect stealth, but I did it lol. I'm working on a No Boss run for Super Metroid (I saw a vid that it's possible to land 70%+ no boss :O). The 10% run was my most difficult challenge so far, but I think this no boss run is even tougher. (Norfair no varia suit = teh sux)

I agree MP3 was a disappointment from the linear gameplay to the boring and uninspired ending.

My personal favorites are MP and MP2 followed by Super Metroid and Zero Mission, Fusion and Corruption are lower on my list but they are still good, Hunters is more of a spin-off so I don't consider it a real metroid game but I love the multiplayer, Metroid and Metroid II I don't like them the lack of a map and the repetitive looking stages make those games confusing and tedious.

I felt underwhelmed by it. I don't mean to sound like an elitist but the 2D Metroids feel better to me. After playing MP2 and 3 it just isn't clicking with me the same way the 2D ones did.

Is it just me, or does anyone else pop in Metroid Prime just to go through the Phendrana Drifts again? That place is amazing.

Have you played the first one? It's like Super Metroid, but in three dimensions.

No, I can't seem to find that one here. There's only two game stores on the whole island worth going to and neither of them has it.

Ask any Metroid fan about it, and they'll tell you how the original is vastly superior to the later Prime games. Exploration is completely free-form, the graphics are still good by today's standards, the gameplay is solid, and the atmosphere is great.

It's worth the possibly-$75 you'd have to pay on eBay or Amazon.

I still have my version 1.0 launch copy, and I'm never giving it up.

I'm embarrassed to say that I've never played any of the 3-D Metroid games. I have played Zero Mission and Fusion on GBA, and they were amazing. I still play them every now and then. Oh gah, the SA-X freaks me out so much. When I first started playing, I had to put the game down for several months because I was so afraid of the thing. But then I learned it's not hard to get away away from it. >_> Go ice missiles.

I agree with this part though, the first Pime is the game that got me into the series. Easily on my top ten greatest games list.

Metroid music is underrated. Phendrana Drifts, Ridley's assorted themes and Gandrayda's boss theme make me happy.
So does the recurring "duh DUH duh duh duuuuuh. duuuuuuuuh." jingle.

I absolutely love metroid to death! Best series of all time!

In order from not so good to best...
M2: This was boring, slow paced, no maps, I did not enjoy this at all other than learning about the different species of Metroids and killing the Queen Metroid.

M: It was the first one, so you gotta give it props. Nothing much else I can say.
MF: Linear storyline killed me, but everything else is awesome, especially SA-X. The new suit looks extremely good and was a nice change.
MP:H: Linear storyline killed me, so did the blocky graphics. The multiplayer was extremely fun, however and was good enough just for that.
MP:2E: Pretty good, but it only succeeded in "giving us more prime". Much more could've been done. However, the new suit models, especially the Varia Suit and Dark samus blew my mind.
SM: Non-linear story line was absolutely epic. You can play it through over and over and it wouldn't be the same game. Hidden passages, customizable weapons, secret moves... I could go on forever.
MP:3C: Absolutely beautiful, if there was a non-linear storyline like going to Elysia before Bryyo, this would be my number one pick. This game truly "delivers more prime".
MP The game that became so good, the franchise gave it a new name. The music alone is a gamer's orgasm. The scan logs told a story and made it worthwhile to get 100%. Sequence skipping allowed the game to be replayed for more fun. So many little extra things packaged into the game as well. Concept art, seeing Samus' face in bright light, rain collecting on the visor, X-ray seeing your left arm, every little detail made this game a masterpiece.

Metroid Prime Pinball... I never played it... it's not even a real metroid game. It's a pinball game.

I still want another 2-d Metroid.

Yes. Definitely.

That and to hear Magmoor Caverns again. I switch off between going into Lower Norfair and Magmoor Caverns to hear that music. :)

When I don't feel like doing that, I listen to it on my iPod.

But yeah, Metroid Prime is amazing. The only parts I'm rather reluctant to visit are the Space Pirate Labs and the Phazon Mines. Going back through the Space Pirate Labs is just obnoxious (I mean, once you've collected the Thermal Visor and are going back), and the Phazon Mines are just sort of desolate and not awesome like the Phendrana Drifts are.

If I had to order the games in order of my favorites, I'd do...

  1. Super Metroid
  2. Metroid Prime
  3. Metroid Fusion (yeah, I know, sorta controversial, but it was the first Metroid game I picked up and I love just running through it, trying to go for a nice speed run (and failing))
  4. Metroid Prime 3
  5. Metroid Prime 2
  6. Metroid
  7. Metroid 2
  8. -
  9. Metroid Prime Hunters (I disliked the game so much I couldn't put it right below another game...the way it was set up, it just was NOT a Metroid game...multiplayer was fun, but still...)

(Zero Mission would be on there but it's the only non-spinoff game I haven't played...I really need to pick it up.)

Have you played the first one? It's like Super Metroid, but in three dimensions.
Yeah, agreed. Metroid Prime + Super Metroid = Epic, legendary, unbeatable, UNIMAGINABLE win.

By the way, nice name. ;)

So does the recurring "duh DUH duh duh duuuuuh. duuuuuuuuh." jingle.
I have a TON of original Metroid music on my iPod, as well as every Metroid Metal. The music is the best video game music ever.

Thank you. I was hoping someone would make the name connection eventually. (I'm also surprised it wasn't already taken!)

Metroid Prime and Super Metroid are already up there in the "greatest games of all time" list.

And, Hyper_Ridley, we all have our differing opinions. However, the general conensus is:

Metroid Prime > Metroid Prime 3: Corruption > Metroid Prime 2: Echoes > Animal Feces > Metroid Prime: Hunters

now, hold on one second. sure, metroid prime hunters wasn't the greatest game in the series, but it is far from being worse than lung cancer.

It was a joke. :p

But, seriously, the only things Hunters has going for it are the multiplayer modes and the graphics, which are still the best on the DS.

^that is exactly how i'd put it, other than metroid's are supposed to be focused on puzzle solving, the adventure, and unique bosses, something it lacked in all departments.

Yeah, you would've thought it would've been taken before. Ah well, better for you!

Metroid Prime > Metroid Prime 3: Corruption > Metroid Prime 2: Echoes > Animal Feces > Metroid Prime: Hunters
Amen.

Hunters was a great game, but it was more focused on the multiplayer. Sort of how you dont judge Brawl by the Subspace Emissary.
That comparison actually just proves the point that Hunters doesn't match up.

Smash Bros has always been multiplayer based. So judging it on the SSE wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.

Metroid has always been single-player based. So judging it based only on Multiplayer wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.

At least, that's the way I see it.

(Or wait, after re-reading your post, I can't tell whether you were saying what I initially thought or what I was saying...so ignore that point if that's you were saying.)

Even the multiplayer wasn't good enough to make up for the single-player being lackluster. It was good, don't get me wrong, just not that good.

Fixed.
I'm glad that Metroid has its own thread on here now. I myself am a new fan, but I've decided to get really into it. I remember beating the first Metroid with a time of fifty-two minutes when I was a little girl, and my sister was amazed.
I got into the Metroid series hardbody with Super Metroid on the VC. I'm waiting until I get a Classic Controller to play it really nice though.

Well, I'm not very good at walljumping (I know, it's a crime ) but yeah, spending a little too much time on Super Metroid (if it's possible to do so :p). I just ordered a SNES with Super Metroid (got it a couple of days ago) but it didn't come with an AC Adapter (I knew this beforehand) so I'm still waiting on the one I ordered so I can play it on the original console. Is it smar to spend money on a game twice? Probably not, but hey, it's Super Metroid...it's worth it.

I'm actually spending most of my time on Fusion right now though. I've been trying to work on my time, trying to go for a Speed Run. I used to focus on getting about 50% (usually got 60 though) and under two hours, but now I want to improve more, and I'm focusing less and less on items and more on time. I've only actually done one new run since I decided to do so (I've been kind of busy, so I run 5 minutes here and there), and my best time thus far is 1:42 but it should improve soon. Also, I want to Speed Run Prime. Sequence Breaking is fun .

Walljumping on Super Metroid is pretty easy. Try to practice it! I use the GameCube controller and it's actually easier for me.

Good luck on the speed runs! My fastest on Fusion was 1:33 with 32%. Zero Mission was 1:50 with 62%.

I don't even want to try 1% on Fusion.

I tried practicing...I'm better at it now than I used to be, but I still have trouble--I'm better in Fusion. Maybe it's easier with the GameCube Controller than Classic Controller (which is what I use), or maybe it'll be easier with SNES once I get it, but it's still tough. I was kind of forced to improve when trying to go up that shaft with the Etecoons (or Dachoras, I can never remember which is which), as you walljump up the whole thing, but I still have trouble with the timing. I don't know why.

I think my % for my 1:42 run was 38...but I'm still pretty careless with my time. I need to work on that, or my time's never going to improve. As for Zero Mission...still need to pick it up...:ohwell:

I tried 1% on Fusion once...I didn't get very far, although that could've been at least partially my fault with the carelessness again.

Yay! I finished my most recent speed run; 1:25 with 31%. Not too shabby, considering that about a week ago, my best time was...what, 1:52? Again, there are a couple of places where I could've improved (if I weren't so insistent on multitasking all of the time...) in places where I forgot to pause when I looked up for a second, where I accidentally didn't do something fully (Like in the second trip to NOC, I ran to the security camera type thing, but I didn't activate it so that the Security Robot would come, so I had to do it over), or where just plain carelessness messed me up. There's definitely room for improvement, and hopefully, I can accomplish said improvement fairly easily.

Ooh, I beat you at Fusion in terms of time and I got less items. I feel awesome now.

You have a point with less items, but I also think that, to some extent, getting more items shouldn't mean you did a worse job...I'm not trying to devalue your run or say mine is better, but consider this; when you run through the game with less items, yes, it takes more skill to get through. But when you die, it doesn't affect your time at all. You could die 1000 times and it would never show. 1% (and close to there) is obviously a different story, since that's really hard to do, but until you get down to really low %s, I say it doesn't necessarily make your run better; it's sort of like comparing apples and oranges, because it has its pros and cons in different areas.

If you get more items, that means it took longer to get through. You took time out of the run to pick up an item here or there, and unless you spend a lot more time for 10% more, it's pretty much on the same level as beating it with a lower %.

Again, not trying to make my run/your run look better/worse, all I'm saying is that more items doesn't necessarily mean it was easier/harder...at least, that's my opinion.

Your run is pretty awesome, I have to admit. ;)

So, anyone played Metroid II: Return of Samus recently? I did, and I didn't like it. Sure, it's Metroid-related, but it's not entirely there, in terms of the free-form exploration.
